April 16/17, 2016 - St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish

Second Sunday of Easter, April 3, 2016
Spring arrived in St. Charles on April 16, 1916, only nine months after the destructive storm hit, church members held a celebration ceremony as the cornerstone was laid for the new sanctuary. Approximately 5,000 people attended. The church continues

The Easter Question
Easter is not just an ancient oddity. Easter is an unsettling way in the world that continues to have socioeconomic, political, and human implications. Easter is not
a “spiritual” event, but a surging of power that touches
all of life. The Easter question for us is not whether you
can get your mind around the resurrection, because you
cannot. Rather the question is whether you can permit
in your horizon:
New healing power,
New surging possibility,
New gestures to the lame,
New ways of power in an armed, fearful world,
New risk,
New life,
Leaping,
Dancing,
Singing,
Praising the power beyond all our controlled
powers.
Walter Brueggemann, The Threat of Life
We Celebrate the Sacraments
with our Young Parishioners
Please pray for our Confirmation class as we celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday, April
14 and welcome Bishop Herman. Your prayers are also
requested for our younger students who will receive
their First Holy Communion on Saturday, April 16. May
God bless each of these young people with His love and
grace as they enter more fully into their Catholic faith.
Two Important Events Coming Up!
Please see the expanded information later in the bulletin about our
 Pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica TODAY to pass
through the “Holy Door” during this Jubilee Year of
Mercy,
 and a commemoration of an important event in the
life of the parish: the 100th anniversary of the laying
of our church cornerstone on April 16, 1916. We will
remember this event with a re-dedication of our
beautiful church.
Everyone is invited to participate in these special
events, and check out the other events that we are planning for our parish’s 225th anniversary year, listed later
in this bulletin.
Día del Niño—Children’s Day
Please join us on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00pm in the
gym to celebrate Día del Niño or Children’s Day. There
will be food, games, and piñatas!
Prayer of the Week
For SCB’s 225th Anniversary
Heavenly Father,
during this wonderful celebration
of our 225th anniversary,
You inspired Pope Francis to declare this a
Year of Mercy.
He encourages us to be “Merciful like the Father.”
We ask You to bless our parish family
and grant us the grace to truly become
“A Community of Acceptance.”
St. Charles Borromeo, pray for us.
Joke of the Week
A noted psychiatrist was a guest at a gathering of humor editors, and his host naturally turned to a subject in
which the doctor was most at ease. “Would you mind
telling me, Doctor, how you detect a mental deficiency in
somebody who appears completely normal?” the host
asked.
“Not at all,” the doctor replied, “I simply ask a question that everyone should be able to answer with no
trouble.”
“What sort of question?” he asked.
“For example, I might say to a person, ‘Captain Cook
made three trips around the world and died during one
of them. Which one?’”
The editor thought a moment, then said with a nervous laugh, “You wouldn’t happen to have another example, would you? I must confess I don’t know much
about history.”

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
DECEMBER 8, 2015—NOVEMBER 20, 2016
AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA

ARCHDIOCESE OF

Jesus said “Truly, I am the door; if any one enters by
me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find
pasture. I came that they may have life, and have it
abundantly.”
—John 10: 7-10
During the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites us to
contemplate the notion of a Holy Door, “a Door of
Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.”
As Pope Francis has designated certain church doors in
Rome as Doors of Mercy, so also has Bishop Carlson
designated The Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis a Door of
Mercy. These churches are sites where individuals, families and other groups may make a pilgrimage—a holy
journey—seeking, remembering, and receiving God’s
mercy.
Join us in Pilgrimage and Celebration as our Borromeo
Church family travels to the Cathedral Basilica in St.
Louis on April 10 at 2:00pm where we will gather as
group to pass through the Door of Mercy. Please meet
on the gym parking lot at 1:00pm. We will have a tour
of the Cathedral and opportunities to pray. To complete our celebrations we will meet at Ted Drewes! “By
crossing the threshold of
“The practice of pilgrimage has a special place in the
Holy Year, because it represents the journey each of us
makes in this life. Life itself is a pilgrimage,
and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim
travelling along the road, making his way
to the desired destination. Similarly, to
reach the Holy Door in Rome or in any
other place in the world, everyone, each
according to his or her ability, will have to
make a pilgrimage. This will be a sign that
mercy is also a goal to reach and requires
dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be
an impetus to conversion: by crossing the
threshold of the Holy Door, we will find
the strength to embrace God’s mercy and
dedicate ourselves to being merciful with
others as the Father has been with us.”
—Pope Francis

dispersados".

The St. Charles Borromeo Journey
1850—1860
Since the 1830s, many German Catholics had settled in the St. Charles area, but some
had grown discouraged by the unavailability of religious services in their own language. Borromeo’s priest already preached and held separate liturgies in French and
English, adding German services to the regular schedule was simply too much. In 1848
jeweler Louis Meyer met with other influential German immigrants in his Main Street
store. The group drew up a petition asking Bishop Peter Kenrick for permission to
organize a new parish, and Kenrick readily agreed. Construction began, and by 1850,
a building, which housed both a church and school, was under the protection of St.
Peter the Apostle. Not long afterward, the new parish bought land just outside the
city limits for a cemetery. Although many families with Germanic surnames remained Borromeo members, quite a few
others joined St. Peter’s. Eventually, St. Peter became the “German Church” while Borromeo would grow to be the
“English Church.” Even today old time St. Charles residents remember this colloquialism.
A more difficult problem, which accompanied the German influx to the area, was the spread of militant anti-Catholic sentiments, by immigrants, as well as by Protestant settlers from the eastern United States. Foreign-born settlers, with attitudes shaped in Europe, frequently confused Catholicism and the Jesuits in particular, with international intrigue. This
attitude blended with an understandable abhorrence of slavery, especially among German and Irish newcomers. In time,
the combination produced a volatile political movement. One anti-Catholic mouthpiece, the St. Louis Tract Society, regularly warned the public about the “Roman beast” and the “Popish system.” In the mid- 1850s, this movement evolved
into the American Party or Know Nothing Party. It came to align its anti-Catholic views with the pro-slavery position.
The stance on slavery probably hastened the decline of the Know-Nothings.
Father Verhaegen summed up the matter in Historia Domus, which is essentially a Jesuit’s diary of the daily events that
take place in the community.
“The town of St. Charles has a population approaching 2,000 souls. And for so small a town it has a
large share of bigoted infidels and apostates. These people have succeeded in exciting prejudice against
the Church. With such enemies, we must deal prudently but strenuously. And we fight them with every
weapon in our spiritual armory, so that they cannot boast of new triumphs over the Catholics. “Let God
triumph, and his enemies be scattered.”

Easter Season Reflection
The resurrection surprises Jesus’ followers. They experience Jesus, who had been crucified and died, to be with
them in their midst. The apostles are the first witnesses of
Jesus’ new and lasting life with us. They become fishers
of people who spread the good news of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead to people all around the Mediterranean Sea. Many people came to believe in Jesus because
of their word.
Jesus’ life continues among us. We share a meal with the
risen Jesus at Sunday Mass just as the seven followers
shared fish and bread with Jesus on the seashore in the
Gospel. The Easter Jesus is with us at every Eucharist, in
every word of the Gospel, and whenever we join in
prayer. In our own lives Jesus surprises us as he surprised
his friends out fishing. We find him with us when we
don’t expect him or when we have little hope.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU
for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all
God’s gifts to you, given for others.
“Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third
time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, ‘Lord, you
know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said
to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’”
John 21:17
All of us are challenged to show our love for Jesus by
“feeding His sheep.” Through prayer ask God how you
should best use your time, talent and treasure to assist
those who are in need. Remember that giving is an act
of worship and helps advance the mission of our parish
and greater Church.
We pray that through prayer we may seek God’s guidance in all our daily spending and giving decisions.
Let us think of how Jesus has come into our lives and
surprised us and when Jesus has given us hope.

St. Charles Borromeo Parish School of Religion
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Rite of Election for our First Communion students and our Confirmation candidates!
The Rite of Election brings to a close the process of preparing our young parishioners for the Sacrament of Eucharist
and for our teens Confirmation; it does not, however bring to a close their learning about the Catholic faith and Traditions. At this Rite, with the testimony of sponsors, catechists, and parents, the candidates affirm their intention to celebrate the Sacrament, and we, the Church, make our "election" of these candidates to receive the Sacrament known.
They inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect as a pledge of fidelity to the Church. Now they are called "the
elect”. This period concludes with the celebration of the Sacrament on April 14 for Confirmation right here at St. Charles
Borromeo, when we welcome Bishop Robert Hermann for the 7pm Liturgy; and for First Eucharist students on Saturday,
April 16 @ 10am at Borromeo.
Students interested in the Sacrament of Confirmation next year, who attend the Academy of the Sacred Heart should
contact the Religious Education Office to register for the program, which begins in August 2016.
Interested in learning more about our Catholic Faith? The Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults (RCIA) continues to
meet on Thursday evenings through May 6:30pm to 8pm. All are welcome to join us as we reflect and discuss scripture
and Catholic teachings.
We look forward to celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Cornerstone of our beloved Borromeo Church next
weekend, when Confirmation students will lead the 5pm Saturday Liturgy; First Communion students will lead the
8:30am Liturgy and our Latino PSR students will lead the 11:30am students. Every family of our PSR program should plan
to attend at least one of these Masses.
We are so blessed and thankful for your continued prayers for the success of all our Religious Education programs.
In the love and peace of Jesus – Mrs. Becca McCullough
My Faith Journey—Lisa Bourgeade
As a child, I attended a Church of Christ with my mother
but we stopped going when I was about 10 years old. I
remember feeling confused as to why we had stopped
but I followed my mother’s lead. I attended several other churches with friends but it wasn’t until I was an adult
that I attended a Presbyterian church with new friends
after I had moved to a new city. I joined the church and
was baptized.
I then met my husband, Pierre, and we were married in
the Catholic Church in France. During the 6 year time
that I lived there, I attended the Catholic Church often
and enjoyed the services. It finally felt like I had found a
spiritual home. We moved back to the United States and
(a new Borromeo Catholic—Easter 2016
have lived in several other states but we have always attended a Catholic Church. Once we realized we would
be staying in St. Charles, we decided to make St. Charles
Borromeo our home.
I am very happy that I am being confirmed into the Catholic Church and that my children are being baptized. After speaking with Father John several times, I look forward to learning more about the Church and becoming
more involved. I feel very strongly about the story of
Jesus and I want to learn to be a more patient, loving
person. I am comforted by God’s love and acceptance
and am grateful to be able to worship Him at St. Charles
Borromeo.
