We were notified of an “asbestos exposure” in the school right in the middle of repainting the classrooms and laying some new carpet. Money had been raised and volunteers recruited to do all of the work. Everything was going wonderfully until the tattered carpeting started to come up. The carpeting had become threadbare through 28 years of wear and tear and all the things that happen to carpeting in a school. It desperately needed to be replaced. It hardly covered what was underneath. What was underneath was some old mastic that had been formulated with asbestos as a fire retardant, and in its day was an appropriate material. Since then, however, it has been discovered to be unsafe in some settings. Once it is exposed it is not safe. Right away the appropriate authorities were notified and actions were taken to arrange for the removal of the mastic according to all applicable regulations. As you read this, the work has been done by a licensed abatement contractor and licensed environmental consultant.. The asbestos has been removed and the school is safe. This has been a very large and unexpected expense. The total cost was $39,000.00. This is all part of maintaining our parish buildings in serviceable condition. Today's readings provide a feast for our souls. Wisdom, that mysterious feminine figure, invites all to her table to eat of her food and drink of her wine. This food helps us to "advance in the way of understanding." As wise followers of the Lord, we listen to Jesus' words: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven." At the table of the Eucharist we feast on this, the most sacred of all foods. We eat and drink of the very body and blood of Christ. From both tables--word and Eucharist--we are given life in abundance. Let us hunger for wisdom and for the presence of Christ as the word of God is proclaimed this day. . Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company ENOUGH IV More is great when it is more health, more opportunity, more justice, more peace, more education, more trust, more faith, more compassion, more generosity, more security, more hope, more understanding, more acceptance, more meaningful work. So why is “enough” so important? As the poem tells us, it is important to have enough of all that life brings us, both good and bad, joys and sorrows, success and failure. Balance of the many aspects of life is essential to appreciating all of life. The difficulty is in our appreciation of what is enough or where the balance is. Last Tuesday we celebrated the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi, a friend of St. Francis and the founder of the Poor Clares, the Order to which our own Patron, St. Colette belonged. She shared Francis’ idea of what was enough, and for her and St. Francis that was simply the presence of God in their lives. Are we all called to that kind of understanding of “enough” or are there different kinds of “enough”?
