Some Christians think that baptism is something that should be chosen by the person, and so they do not believe in infant baptism. We, Catholic Christians, go back to the time of the apostles when families were baptized together, parents and toddlers together. The entire household converted to the faith and received it as a blessing from God. Baptism then is something that is GIVEN, not chosen, just like we did not choose to live in this world, but we were chosen to have life. This is a very different idea, focusing on what God has done, instead of what human beings can or cannot choose. Our faith comes from God, just like our being baptized in the faith. When I was a child, I grew up in an environment where the faith was already a part of my life, thanks to my mother who was the leader of my faith and served as my first teacher in the ways of God. The downside to it is that it becomes so easy for me to be complacent in my faith, or to not recognize the gift because I have become so used to breathing it every day of my life. The difference of having my faith as part of my everyday experience is that sometimes I am prone to ignore it or take it for granted. Today, there is an opportunity for maturing Catholics, and Catholics who have come of age, to make a decision to confirm what they have received on the day of their baptism. They were then baptized by the Spirit, and now, by the sacrament of confirmation, they open their minds and hearts to that Spirit to be at work in their lives. Now they choose for themselves what God has given from the beginning – to live their lives as children of God, as mature Catholic men and women, empowered by their faith to live happy, healthy and holy lives. How wonderful is that! This weekend, as our young friends in Jesus are confirmed in the Holy Spirit, the whole church rejoices. We pray together that their confirmation will bear the spiritual fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5: 2223). I congratulate our confirmandi, and I give thanks to God for them. I believe that these days, Catholics need to prepare well for the trials and challenges of living the faith well. More and more, we are being challenged to stand up for our faith and be willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of our belief and love of God. The days ahead are uncertain, but the Holy Spirit that we have received in confirmation will always be our guide. God bless our church! ¡Dios bendiga nuestra iglesia! With loving prayers, Fr. St. Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles, calls us to reform our lives and turn to God. Likewise, St. John reminds us that Jesus is an offering for our sins. Through His death and Resurrection, Jesus freed us from sin. Faithful stewards acknowledge His true presence in the Eucharist, as did the disciples on the road to Emmaus after His Resurrection in the breaking of the bread. The Church has long taught that partaking of the Eucharist strengthens us on our journey as Christ’s disciples, and that participating tin the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the forgiveness of sins can draw us closer to Him, bringing peace to our lives. This is to your advantage, as the mucus that lines your nose and throat, as well as the tears that wet your eyes are helping to prevent bacteria from infecting those areas and making you sick.
