PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
November 16,,2014
From the Pastor’s Desk
Fr. Philip Kollithanath
As Catholics if we have to find joy in trying to do the Will of God everyday not in doing what the world tells us through its propaganda
media, through captivating shows and music, through subtle message packed games and entertainment programs, there are several questions
challenging us and our sincerity in our faithfulness to the Lord and His teachings.
We speak of marriage and family as the foundation of our faith, the ideal church where God’s love and teachings are taught and experienced progressively as we grow in Wisdom and grace before God and the world. If here is love and faith in the family the kids will have it. If these
are absent in the family, the kids will be dysfunctional and alienated from the Lord as they grow up in the world. Parents have this responsibility to
make sure there is love and faith alive in the family. At Baptism they promised to God to raise the children in faith but if they forget about it later
and fail to do that God given responsibility, we are losing generations of children who should have grown with the knowledge and love of the
Lord. So where and why do we fail?
In an ideal marriage, the woman opens her body to welcome the man and to experience the oneness in Body and Spirit. This is not just
a lustful visualization. It is a challenging statement. It demands that they both grow beyond the physicalness of their union into the Spiritual and
transcendental way of enjoying life together. In plain language, they need to grow form lustful stage to real love which is spiritual and really uniting
such a way that nothing can separate them.
This is very true about physical life as well as spiritual life. This is what St. Paul writes in his letter to the Romans ( Rom.8:31-39), “
what can separate me from the love of Christ? ..” we are not talking about a lustful life. It is the spiritual relationship that is far beyond what the
lustful human mind conceives. Lust is selfish, love is gracious and giving unconditionally.
One major problem in our families is that husband and wife have not succeeded in transcending their life to that spiritual level of unity.
They are stuck in the lustfulness. So long as they remain there, there is always unhappiness due to the dissatisfaction, distrust and many other
issues connected with worldliness. This leads to affairs, many addictive dysfunctions like pornography, masturbation, alcohol and drug habits that
eventually will destroy not only the marriage and family but even their own personal lives. Covering up many such unacceptable deviations, couples may hang in there for a while but the collapse is imminent and will be disastrous. True victims are the children
In a true Catholic Marriage, both husband and wife will sit together and share their thoughts and feelings, pray together and praise God
together frequently, dialogue with each other and their children about life and its challenges and crises, success and failures and together will try
to recognize God’s will in what happens to them every day. This is the sign of a family that has grown from lust to love where God’s love is experienced and witnessed. This is what we are lacking in our families today. May the Lord strengthen our families. God bless you all

TREASURES AND TRADITIONS
All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essential to church life. In the West,
the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church
for a full Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil
is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes anoint
the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them.
Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a
ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one
an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species. While this
ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to
serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the
second form required a confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of hands, which everyone
understood as being an essential part of penance.

Fr. Philip Kollithanath
.. "No estamos
