March 15, 2015 F o u r t h Sunday of lent Strengthening Families at Lent Lent offers opportunities to pass on your faith to your children. Here are some ideas for making Lenten memories during this Lenten season. Pray together. Even if it's just an Our Father or Hail Mary, it unites the family. Let each family member mention one person or problem that they would like to pray for in a special way at dinnertime. Make a Lenten candle cross and light a candle each week in the same way an Advent wreath is used. Decorate the home in purple, the color of Lent, with the cross as the focal 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org point. Take the kids grocery shopping for the poor. Let them help you bring the food to your parish pantry or the local food bank. Let children light a candle at church for people throughout the world who WHAT’S INSIDE: Around the Parish Page 2 Feast of St. Joseph Page 3 Easter Flower Donations are sick or hungry. Sample Lenten food favorites such as hot cross buns or pretzels. If you're really adventurous, check the Internet for recipes and make your own! Talk about how the pretzel symbolizes the way early Christians used to pray. Along the same lines, make crosses and resurrection eggs. Take family members and friends. Lent is a way to recall a larger story than just celebration. Doing these things with your children will not only teach them about the whole season, and give them traditions they will one day share with their families. It is a convenient, secure and environmentally friendly way to support Christ the King. Thank you to all of those who use E-Giving! www.cathedralofchristtheking.org Stewardship of Treasure How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116 The Gospel verse, John 3:16, For God so loved the world he gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life, creates a common thread of God’s love for us throughout today’s Scripture passages. As disciples of Christ, we will find our eternal home with God through His gift of salvation. In the Second Reading, St. Paul reminds us that we will be raised up with Christ through His gift of faith to us. As disciples of Christ, we are destined to do good works of stewardship through Him. Offertory Income Budget Year-to-Date $ 4,158,670 Offertory Income Actual Year-to-Date $ 4,245,901 Actual Over/(Under) Budget Year-to-Date $ 87,231 For your convenience, electronic giving is available at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org. Feast of St. Joseph Thursday, March 19 is the Feast of St. Joseph. St. Joseph of Nazareth is a great saint who totally lived by faith – a faith that made him a real hero. He was chosen by our heavenly Father as the trustworthy guardian and protector of his greatest treasures, Jesus his divine son and Mary Queen of heaven. Joseph was Jesus’ foster-father and Mary’s husband. He was poor all his life and had to work very hard in his carpenter shop, but he did not mind. Joseph was happy to work for his little family. He loved Jesus and Mary so very much. In the Holy Bible we do not find even one word spoken by St. Joseph, and yet, even without words, he shows his deep faith and trust in the Living God. Whatever the Lord wanted him to do, St. Joseph did at once, no matter how difficult it was. He was humble and pure, gentle and wise. Jesus and Mary loved him and obeyed him because God had placed him as the head of their family. What a joy for St. Joseph to live with the Son of God himself. Jesus obeyed him, helped him, and loved him. We pray to St. Joseph as the protector of the dying for a special reason. We believe that Joseph died peacefully in the arms of Jesus and Mary when God finally called his faithful servant to the joy of heaven. St. Joseph died before Jesus' passion and death on the Cross. St. Teresa of Avila chose St. Joseph as the protector of her order of Carmelite sisters. She had a great trust in his prayers. "Every time I ask St. Joseph for something," she said, "he always obtains it for me." St. Joseph is the patron of the Universal Church. 3 CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING Lenten challenge WWW.CATHEDRALOFCHRISTTHEKING.ORG Teen faith formation Grades 9-12 Nick Labrie • 404-836-0628 • [email protected] It’s Not Too Late! This Tuesday, March 17, is St. Patrick’s day. This holiday is celebrated every year on March 17, honoring the Irish patron saint, St. Patrick. And while we are all familiar with the typical traditions and food that are used to celebrate the day, here are some fun facts you might not know: Chicago dyes its river green for the day’s festivities. Not to be outdone, the White House’s fountain is dyed green. In Seattle, the parade routes are painted in green. Observers are supposed to wear green or else risk being pinched. In the Northeast, many celebrate by planting peas. This is largely due to the color and time of year. The symbol of the shamrock used for St. Patrick’s Day comes from the story of St. Patrick using the shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in America in 1737, organized by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston, including a feast and religious service. This first celebration of the holiday in the colonies was largely to honor and celebrate the Irish culture that so many colonists had been separated from. In Ireland, this celebration is more religious in nature, as it is considered a religious feast.
