Help Fight Hunger
Parishioners,
I was recently informed that a group of senators introduced the Hunger-Free
Summer for Kids Act, a bill that could end hunger for millions of children
during the summer months. Feeding children during the summer is a mission
near and dear to our hearts, as we participate in MUST summer lunch making
every year, feeding thousands of children who would otherwise go without.
I am asking you to call, tweet or email your senators today, urging them
to cosponsor this bipartisan legislation. You can go online at http://
www.nokidhungry.org/ and with a click of the button, contact them.

If this bill is passed, as many as 6.5 million more children could have the
opportunity to get the food they need during the summer months. Please help
us in the fight against childhood hunger.
God Bless You,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector

Sponsors Needed for RCIA
Parishioners are needed to sponsor adults inquiring into the faith and preparing to
come into full communion with the Church. A sponsor is not required to have a
degree in theology but rather a listening, active and open heart. Time and again
past sponsors have experienced the privilege of being part of someone’s spiritual
journey into the Church. Classes are held Mondays, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in Kenny
Hall beginning September 14. Sacraments will be celebrated at the 2016 Easter
Vigil. For additional information, contact [email protected].
You’re Invited
Parishioners are invited to attend the Mass of inauguration of the Mission of the
Cathedral of Christ the King, celebrated by our Bishop Luis Zarama on Sunday,
September 13 at 9:30 am. The Mission of the Cathedral of Christ the King is
located at 3349 Buford Hwy. NE, Atlanta GA 30329. For more information or to
volunteer contact Angela Almario at 404-267-3696.

The annual Christ the King parish picnic will be held on Saturday, September 26.
This is always a fun-filled event open to all parishioners. Please join us!
Tuesday Morning Bible Study
Women's Bible study for 2015. We are studying the upcoming Sunday readings
each week on Tuesdays at 10:30 am in the conference room across from the
Pastoral Ministry office. We are a separate Bible study than the one which usually
meets on Mondays. For more information, and to give us a head count to buy
books, please contact Mernie Huttman at [email protected]. The group
will begin on September 8.
Praying the Rosary
Won’t you stay even for a short time and pray the Rosary with us? After each
weekday Mass 6:45 am, 8:10 am and 12 Noon; Saturdays after 8:10 am Mass.
For information on the Holy Rosary, e-mail [email protected].
Snack Bag Ministry
Each month, Christ the King provides approximately 100 snack bags to hungry
individuals who come to our doors. Please help us feed the hungry by donating
non-perishable, individual pull top cans of a main dish item (such as chili,
macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, beef stew or ravioli), individually wrapped
crackers, canned apples sauce or fruit and bottled water for the snack bags. A
donation of as little as $2 can alleviate someone’s hunger. You can also help by
joining us on the last Monday of the month at 7 pm in the Parish Hall for a Snack
Bag-A-Thon to make the snack bags and pray for those who will receive them.
The next Snack Bag-A-Thon is September 28.

In the passage form the Book of Proverbs, Wisdom encourages the people to forsake
foolishness and partake in the food and deink that God has “mixed.” This foretells today’s
Gospel account where St. John continues to develop the theology of Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself
and His institution of the Eucharist as the true source of strength and unity for the Christian
community. We, as Christian stewards strive to become one with the Lord by regularly
partaking in His Eucharistic banquet. In doing so, we are strengthened to embrace
stewardship as a way of life by sharing our abundant blessings with our parish communion
and the needy. St. Paul reminds us to do this in gratitude to God through Christ.

late Summer 2015
To know, love and serve and Jesus did
Are you looking for how you can best serve? There
are many opportunities to become fully engaged in parish
life through prayer, study of the Faith, the sharing of your
time, talent and treasure, and by inviting others to be a
part of the Cathedral life. Here are a few questions to
consider:
Living Your Strengths Journey
Do you ...
Each of us is uniquely created in the image and likeness
of God our Creator but it isn’t always easy to put our
God-given talents into practice. The Living Your Strengths
Journey gives us the ability to discover our God-given
talents, explore and develop them and grow as good
stewards of the strengths and talents God has given us.
Want to understand truth? Stand up for what you
believe? Enjoy presenting what you have learned?
Help others to know and experience our Catholic faith?
Consider these ministries:

Are you ...
Sensitive to suffering? Sympathizing and empathetic?
There for others in need? Often sought out as a counselor?
Have a strong sense of concern? Consider these ministries:
Stephen Ministry

Are you wondering what your strengths are? There are
many opportunities to become fully engaged in parish
life through prayer, study of our faith, the sharing of your
time, talent and treasure, and by inviting others to be a
part of the Cathedral life. It can also be a challenge to
know what to do or might be a good fit for your talents.
There are 34 identified strengths that are measured by
the Clifton StrengthsFinders Assessment. The strengths
fall into four distinct categories: relationship building,
executing, influencing and strategic thinking. Having
strengths in these areas gives you clues as to how God
has equipped you to serve at home, at work or in a parish
ministry. You also learn how you are best equipped to
work in partnership with others.
The journey begins with taking the Clifton StrengthsFinders
Assessment to determine your Top Five Strengths. The
four-week Living Your Strengths Journey and working
with your personal Strengths Coach will help you “find
your right ministry fit.” Afterwards, you will be able to
answer with confidence the following questions:
Have a knack for uniting people? Influence others to get
involved? Encourage a team approach? Consider these
ministries:
– Can you recognize your Top Five Strengths and the
unique strengths of the people around you?
– Are you using your unique gifts to be the best you can
be in your personal, professional and parish lives?
– Have you found the CTK ministry where you can use
your strengths?

SACRAMENT
PREPARATION &
PROCESSES
Sacraments are vital expressions
of who we are as Catholic
Christians. Each time we
receive a sacrament we respond
in a deeper way to Jesus’ call to discipleship. The
Catechism of the Catholic Church lists the sacraments
as follows: “The whole liturgical life of the Church
revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the
sacraments.”
Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is the first Sacrament
celebrated in the process of
becoming a full member of the
Church community. It is the first
of the three Sacraments of Initiation
– Baptism, Confirmation and
Eucharist. Baptism is, like all the
sacraments, a gift from God. Water
is the universal symbol. Water is absolutely essential for all
life. Water cleanses and restores. It is the waters of Baptism
which give us new life. In accordance, through Baptism we
also die to our old sinful selves in order to be restored and
resurrected in the new life of Christ.
For Adults
Helen Young, 404-233-2145 x439, [email protected]
Non-Catholic adults who wish to learn more about Baptism
in the Catholic church are invited to participate in the Rite
of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program. RCIA
offers a program of faith formation for adults 18 years and
older that will prepare them for full initiation into the
Catholic Church at Easter.

Sacrament of
Confirmation
For Children
Elaine McCollum, 404-267-3692, [email protected]
Parents who desire to have their children baptized are
asked to attend a preparation session as early as three
months before the birth of the child. Godparents are also
encouraged to attend. Please call ahead to register.
Sacrament of
First Reconciliation
& First Eucharist
The forgiveness of sins committed
after Baptism is conferred by
a particular sacrament called the
sacrament of conversion, confession, penance, or reconciliation.
To return to communion with
God after having lost it through sin is a process born of the
grace of God who is rich in mercy and solicitous for the
salvation of men. “I have swept away your transgressions
like a cloud, and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have
redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:22)
“The Most Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the
Christian life, and this sacrament completes Christian initiation. The Most Holy Eucharist is the most august sacrament, in which Christ the Lord himself is contained, offered
and received, and by which the Church constantly lives and
grows…” (Canon Law 897)
For Adults Interested in Becoming Catholic
Helen Young, 404-233-2145 x439, [email protected]
Non-Catholics and baptized Catholic adults who have
not received First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and
Confirmation and wish to learn more about initiation into
the Catholic church are invited to participate in the Rite of
Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program to prepare
for full initiation/communion into the Catholic Church.
For Children (1st-2nd grade)
Elaine McCollum, 404-267-3692, [email protected]
Formation and celebration of the Sacraments of
Reconciliation and Eucharist is a two-year process. This
sacrament preparation begins in the First Grade (remote
preparation) and is continued in the Second Grade
(immediate preparation).

Elaine McCollum, 404-267-3692, [email protected]
This ministry is for children 9 years and older who have
not been baptized, those baptized in another denomination, and those who have been away from the Church
since Baptism as a Catholic. The preparation process takes
at least one year, and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Catholic adults who have been
baptized and have received First
Eucharist who wish to learn more
about being fully initiated into the Catholic church are
invited to participate in Confirmation classes. A program
of faith formation for adults 18 years and older, Confirmation classes will prepare them for full initiation into the
Catholic Church.
For Teens
Colleen Beringer, 404-267-3676, [email protected]
The Sacrament of Confirmation is a two-year process,
per the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Every
spring 9th graders and unconfirmed 10th-12th graders are
invited to register and begin sacramental preparation, with
the sacrament celebrated in 10th grade. It is the intention
of the preparation process to bring the candidates into
a richer, more meaningful relationship with Christ, His
Church, and their Catholic faith community through
prayer, learning, reflection, and service.
Sacrament of Marriage
Sparky Spearman, 404-233-2145 x673,
[email protected]
Marriage is a beautiful and
important sacrament, a covenant
made by two people with God.
The preparation process for
marriage requires six months.
Pre-Cana instruction,
documentation, and ceremony planning will be initiated
after preliminary registration and date reservation.

Convalidation
Deacon Whitney Robichaux, 404-233-2145 x474,
[email protected]
For the marriage of a Catholic to be valid, Church law
ordinarily requires Catholics to be married before a Catholic
priest or deacon in a Catholic Church. The process for
rectifying an invalid marriage is called a “Convalidation”.
Catholics who married their spouse in institutions outside
the Church are encouraged to convalidate their marriage.

pursue the annulment process. Any priest or deacon can
provide information and discuss the process with those
with interest. In addition, the Cathedral has trained case
sponsors to assist people in submitting a case to the
Tribunal. Contact Deacon Whitney Robichaux to arrange a
confidential discussion with one of our case sponsors. For
general information, group sessions about the annulment
process are offered three times a year with Deacon
Robichaux.

Sponsor Couple for Marriage Preparation
Lida & William Valentine, [email protected]
The sponsor couple ministry is a couple-to-couple
approach to marriage preparation. Sponsor couples
for marriage are similar to sponsors for Baptism and
Confirmation. A husband and wife become sponsors
for a couple engaged to be married. Together the
couples explore the realities of married life through
reflection and dialogue with a sponsor couple already
living in a Christian Marriage. This parish-based program
has the advantage of being the most personal because
it is couple-to-couple and can more easily cater to the
individual needs and interests of the engaged couple.
The couples meet together for a series of five meetings.
Each of the meetings lasts about two hours. The meetings
take place in the home of the sponsor couple.

Sunday sessions are offered at 9:00 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. The
aim of a catechist is to lead our children to a deeper knowledge and love of Jesus and His Church so that they may
form a firm commitment to follow Christ. Through their
service the catechist nurtures and mentors the faith and
spiritual growth of children. Anyone with a willingness to
“echo the faith” will find the ongoing training and supplied
materials a great help in their success as a catechist.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)
EDGE (7th-8th Grades)
Elaine McCollum, 404-267-3692, [email protected]
Colleen Beringer, 404-267-3676, [email protected]
Vacation Bible School is for children ages 4 through 10 during a selected week of June each year. The program combines
lively songs, skits, crafts, games, Bible stories and snacks – a
fun and active way for children to learn about God’s love and
how to make it a part of their daily lives.
EDGE aims to lead teens closer to Christ through dynamic
activities, systematic catechesis, vibrant evangelization, affirmation, joy, authenticity and Eucharistic spirituality, to
name a few. It is always the goal to meet the middle school
teens where they are and bring them into the heart of Christ
through full and active participation in His Church. EDGE
has weekly catechetical meetings called “EDGE Nights” on
Sunday evenings after the 4pm Mass. Other events may be
offered on a seasonal basis and can be found at www.ctkyouth.com

Life Teen (9th-12th Grades)
Nick Labrie, 404-836-0628, [email protected]
Life Teen’s mission is to lead teens closer to Christ through
systematic catechesis, dynamic evangelization, affirmation,
joy, authenticity and Eucharistic spirituality to name a
few. As a movement, Life Teen provides not only great
resources but excellent faith experiences through summer
camps, mission trips, conferences, an amazing website
(www.lifeteen.com) and daily intercessory prayer! It is always
the goal to meet the high school teens where they are at
and bring them into the heart of Christ through full and
active participation in His Church. LifeTeen has weekly
catechetical meetings called “Life Nights” on Sunday
evenings during the academic year. Bible studies, socials,
service projects and other events will be offered on a
seasonal basis and can be found at www.ctkyouth.com.
Confirmation (Available for 10th Grade & Up)
Colleen Beringer, 404-267-3676, [email protected]
The Sacrament of Confirmation is a two-year process, per
the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Every spring
9th graders and unconfirmed 10th-12th graders are invited
to register and begin sacramental preparation, with the
sacrament celebrated in 10th grade. It is the intention of the
preparation process to bring the candidates into a richer,
more meaningful relationship with Christ, His Church, and
their Catholic faith community through prayer, learning,
reflection, and service.

Core Team (Adult Volunteers/Catechists)
Nick Labrie, 404-836-0628, [email protected]
The Core Team is comprised of adult volunteers who seek
to guide teens in their spiritual formation. Though Life
Teen and EDGE have separate Core Teams, both seek to
accomplish the same mission of leading teens closer to
Christ. The Core Team is expected to attend the majority of
the Life Nights or EDGE Nights. Being on one of the Core
Teams is a one year commitment and occasionally requires
showing up early to set up or staying to clean up after a
weekly catechetical session (which are 1½ hours long, once
a week). Training will be given on how to plan and facilitate
Life Nights and EDGE Nights. The Core Team is invited to
attend retreats, camps, conferences and other events at the
invitation of the youth minister but not required to attend
all events. Every volunteer must be background checked by
the Archdiocese of Atlanta and in good standing with the
Church. This is a great opportunity to build community as
well as to serve the Church.

least two new EMHCs at each Mass, particularly for the 5:45 pm and 7:15 pm
Masses on Sundays, as well as homebound ministers to the sick. EMHCs are
scheduled at their Mass of preference.
Training to become a NEW Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion will be
held Wednesday, August 19 and Monday, August 24 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
starting in Kenny Hall and practicing in the Cathedral. You only need to attend
one training session. The Archdiocese of Atlanta mandates refresher training for
ALL CURRENT EMHCs every three years. This training will be held Wednesday,
August 19 and Monday, August 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm in Kenny Hall.

CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
GRACE Scholars
GRACE Scholars is a Georgia nonprofit corporation and tax exempt
charity. GRACE has met the
requirements for designation as a
student scholarship organization
(SSO) in Georgia. Because GRACE is
an SSO, Georgia taxpayers can
redirect part of their tax liability to
GRACE and qualify for a generous
tax benefit created by the Georgia
legislature - a 100 percent tax credit.
As GRACE is a tax exempt charity
(501-c-3 organization), gifts to
GRACE also qualify as charitable
contributions under federal law.
GRACE was founded by Archbishop
Wilton Gregory of Atlanta and
Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah
in 2008, to take advantage of the
SSO/tax credit legislation. Since then
more than 3,000 taxpayers have
redirected part of their Georgia
income taxes to GRACE which, in
turn, has awarded scholarships to
students wishing to attend Georgia
Catholic Schools.
The mission of GRACE Scholars,
Inc., is to provide children from
families with financial need
throughout the State of Georgia with
greater opportunities to secure a
quality PK-12 Catholic education.

STEWARDSHIP
What is Stewardship?
Stewardship is a lifestyle, a life of total accountability and responsibility. It is the
acknowledging of God as the Creator and Owner of all. Stewards see themselves
as the caretakers of all Gods’ gifts. Gratitude for these many gifts is expressed in
prayer, worship, offering and action. Stewardship is a way of life. It is a way of
thanking God for all our blessings by returning to God a portion of the many gifts
(everything we have, for instance, our time, talent and treasure) that we have been
given. It involves the intentional, planned and proportionate giving of all we have.
Finally, stewardship encourages everyone to participate in the task of building the
Kingdom of God. When we explain that God has given each of us certain things,
that these gifts are our responsibility to care for, and that we are accountable for
what we do with these gifts, then there is no doubt that everyone should be
involved. Stewardship rejects the notion that we must "have it all" and instead,
demonstrates the value of giving in love, in service and in justice.
Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the
teachings of Jesus Christ.
"Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, yours are the
eyes through which he is doing good, yours are the hands with which he is to
bless people now…" (St. Teresa of Avila)

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
