The Origin of St. Valentine
The origin of St. Valentine, and how many St. Valentines there
were, remains a mystery. One opinion is that he was a Roman
martyred for refusing to give up his Christian faith. Other
historians hold that St. Valentine was a temple priest jailed for
defiance during the reign of Claudius. Whoever he was, Valentine really existed because archaeologists have unearthed a
Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint
Valentine. In 496 AD Pope Gelasius marked February 14th as
a celebration in honor of his martyrdom.
All that is reliably known is his name and that he was martyred and buried at a cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to
the Milvian bridge to the north of Rome on that day. Because
so little is known of him, in 1969 the Roman Catholic Church
removed his name from the General Roman Calendar, leaving
his liturgical celebration to local calendars. The Roman Catholic Church continues to recognize him as a saint, listing him
as such in the February 14 entry in the Roman Martyrology.

“You must ask God to give you power to fight against
the sin of pride which is your greatest enemy – the root
of all that is evil, and the failure of all that is evil, and
the failure of all that is good. For God resists the proud.”
St. Vincent de Paul
In today’s Gospel, (Mark 1:29-39), We follow a single
day’s ministry of our Lord outside the Synagogue in Capernaum. Jesus cured people even on the Sabbath to
bring new life to those that were suffering while Jewish
leaders were plotting how to kill him. Which would be
a more fitting exception to the Sabbath law?
From the Bishop
IS GOD CALLING YOU?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who
are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to
a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men
through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings aren't meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is
your true vocation and build your relationship with
Christ along the way.
If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between
the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether
God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited
to attend this month’s discernment meeting on Feb. 22nd, from
4pm to 6pm at Saint James Parish, 115 E. Delaware Avenue,
Pennington, New Jersey. Join Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Walsh, as
he shares his experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and conclude with conversation and a meal.
Please register with Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office at
[email protected] or call (609) 406-7449. Join
us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to His
invitation!
First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7
In this soliloquy, Job unhappily compares human life to the
work of a day laborer or a slave, both of which were
wretched states of life. His human friends having failed him,
he is downhearted and so he appeals to God.
Second Reading: I Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23
Paul accepts the limitations on his freedom and says he
preaches out of obligation. Since he is a true apostle, he can
share in the fruits of the gospel only by bringing it to others.
Gospel: Mark 1:29-39
Jesus cures Peter’s mother-in-law, sure proof that he was a
married man at the time of his call. The significant but short
visit to Capernaum concludes with the healing of many more
people. Jesus then leaves to pray alone, and insists that He
must move on to other locales to fulfill His mission.
My dear parishioners:
I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of
love and concern I have received from all over
our Diocese, including your parish. I have received over 10,000 cards, letters, emails, video
messages, gifts and countless prayers during my
hospitalization and ongoing recovery. I could
not begin to respond to each one personally, as
much as I wish I could. Your pastor has allowed me to offer my heartfelt thanks in your
parish bulletin. I am most grateful to you for
your loving concern. The future looks good and
I hope to be back in public by Palm Sunday. My thankful prayers are with you. God
bless you.

Social Justice Corner - February 8, 2015
To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. 1
Corinthians 9:22
Like Jesus, Paul becomes weak to win over the hearts of
those who think strength comes with power and the use
of force. Jesus and Paul embrace nonviolence. Some
think of non-violence as passivism, but it's really pacifism. Nonviolence is the use of non-compliance with
evil. Nonviolence combats evil with love.
“Nonviolent resistance is committed to making friends
out of enemies. The goal of nonviolent resistance is to
concentrate on issues rather than on belittling, demeaning, destroying the people who hold positions different
from our own. Nonviolent resistance calls us to distinguish between enmity and opposition.
“Nonviolent resistance condemns systems, ideas or policies that oppress but never launches personal attacks
against individuals who are the agents of the system
itself. If we cannot assume the good will of those who
oppose us we must at least not judge their motives. Ideas and systems are bigger than any single person. To
attack individuals in order to curb a sinful system only
plays into the hands of the system itself by failing to
focus attention where attention is necessary.
Nonviolent resistance absorbs physical attack without
striking back physically. Suffragettes went to jail to win
the vote and never struck a blow. Women and men
faced attack dogs in Selma, Alabama to win the right to
be human beings without themselves becoming barbaric in the process. It was row upon row of Indians falling to their knees under the gratuitous blows of their
English masters that sent a chill up the spine of a colonial world. Nonviolent resistance unmasks the inhumanity of oppression and gives all of us another chance
to repent and begin again to be thinking, feeling human
beings.” taken from Heart of Flesh: a feminist spirituality for women and men

Spread a Little Love—IIt will make you feel good too
Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to let the
people in your life know how much you love and care
about them. Here are some ways you can express your
love on this special day:
Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out your kids’
sandwiches for lunch. Draw hearts or place heart stickers on their lunch bags. And don’t forget to
add a note telling them how much you love
them and why. You can also do the same
thing for your husband or wife.
Have the kids help you bake heart-shaped
cookies and deliver them to grandparents,
neighbors, residents of a nursing home or
anyone else you think might enjoy receiving
a treat.
Focus on the true meaning of Valentine’s
Day. Aside from the cards, gifts, etc., the
purpose of the day is to let those we care
about know we love them. This Valentine’s
Day, tell family members and friends just how much
they truly mean to you.

Inclement Weather—Mass Schedule & CCD
At this time of year when inclement weather may
be upon us, it might be best to call ahead to see if
there are any CCD or Mass schedule changes.
Please call the main line 609 448-0141 and listen
to Fr. Pat’s greeting or select x21 for CCD.
Valentine's Day
Many people around the world celebrate Valentine’s
Day by showing appreciation for the people they love or
adore. Some people take their loved ones for a romantic
dinner at a restaurant while others may choose this day
to propose or get married. Many people give greeting
cards, chocolates, jewelry or flowers, particularly roses,
to their partners or admirers on Valentine’s Day.
It is also a time to appreciate friends in some social
circles and cultures. For example, Valentine's Day in
Finland refers to “Friend's day”, which is more about
remembering all friends rather than focusing solely on
romance. Valentine's Day in Guatemala is known as Day
of Love and Friendship. It is similar to Valentine’s Day
customs and traditions in countries such as the United
States but it is also a time for many to show their appreciation for their friends.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
MINISTRIES
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 9 more payments to make totaling $76,021.74
and will be paid off in August of 2015. Along with these
important loan payments we continue to provide the
proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our
buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the
while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud
to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced
substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.

909 Days that Changed the World
One of our daily Mass attendees, Bob Dunne, has selfpublished a new book titled 909 Days that Changed
the World, a chronological account of the two and
half years of Jesus’ public ministry as they likely happened. “Jesus Christ will become more alive, more
human as the reader walks along with him and sees
how his ministry unfolds day by day, week by week,”
explains Bob. Bishop O’Connell says; “In a succession
of short but accessible chapters, Bob succeeds in
bringing the four Gospels together…so much so that
my studies and reading and preaching of many years
found still more about Him to inform my sermons
and, more personally, to nourish my soul. If spiritual
reading can still offer a "wow factor" after all these
years, Bob's writing does it.” Reading the book could
be a great Lenten resolution. Bob will be here in the
gathering space after Masses on February 7th and 8th
to offer his book for sale ($16 with sales tax).

V DOMINGO ORDINARIO (Marcos 1:29-39)

Gracias
(Solamente para la primera semana).
