William Saunders Over the years, modifications have been made to the Lenten observances, making our practices not only simple but also easy. Ash Wednesday still marks the beginning of Lent, which lasts for 40 days, not including Sundays. People are still encouraged "to give up something" for Lent as a sacrifice. (An interesting note is that technically on Sundays and solemnities like St. Joseph's Day (March 19) and the Annunciation (March 25), one is exempt and can partake of whatever has been offered up for Lent. Nevertheless, I was always taught, "If you gave something up for the Lord, tough it out. Don't act like a Pharisee looking for a loophole." Moreover, an emphasis must be placed on performing spiritual works, like attending the Stations of the Cross, attending Mass, making a weekly holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament, taking time for personal prayer and spiritual reading and most especially making a good confession and receiving sacramental absolution. Although the practices may have evolved over the centuries, the focus remains the same: to repent of sin, to renew our faith and to prepare to celebrate joyfully the mysteries of our salvation. This covenant will be for all nations, and written on hearts, not stone tablets. Second Reading: Hebrews 5:7-9 This could well be an ancient hymn. Jesus’ obedience leads to His priestly consecration. He brings eternal salvation because His priesthood is eternal. Gospel: John 12:20-33 The Greeks come seeking Jesus. Then Jesus addresses His disciples to confirm that His “hour” of glorification has arrived. Salvation will occur because of His coming death “as a grain of wheat falling to the ground.” Religious Education Director: Aileen Mary O’Brien 609-448-0141 x21 [email protected] Religious Ed. Admin. Assistant/ Liaison Latino Community: Ximena Bustamante 609-448-0141x29 [email protected] Office hours: 9-3 PM Monday – Friday We are closed Sat. and Sun. Director’s Corner “God, in the shipwreck of this present life, sustain me by the plank of prayer, lest I sink by my own weight. Instead, let the hand of your mercy raise me up.” St. Gregory the Great In today’s Gospel, (John 20:20-33), A decisive turning point in John’s Gospel narrative. By his impending death, he will bring graces for Israel and for all of the Gentiles. We have the analogy again of the necessity of a seed to die to bear beautiful fruit. A voice from heaven is heard by the entire crowd, just as it was heard at Jesus’ Baptism and the Transfiguration. When Jesus is lifted up on the cross (which he is talking about his impending death) he will draw all peoples to him. There is a “messianic secret” theme throughout Mark’s Gospel-Jesus tells the demons he expels to be silent. Our Lord wanted to avoid the wrath of his enemies until the appointed time of his passion. Religious Education News: Parish Religious Education registration begins on April 1st. If you register your child before June 30 you will receive a $10 discount. I have reached the point where doctors will now call me a “fetus”. Mommy and Daddy just call me “peanut” which I like better! I am starting a period of rapid development, especially in the brain, the irises of my eyes have started to develop and my eye color is determined, (Daddy wants brown, like Mommy’s). I am now just over an inch in length. Won’t you please remember to pray each day for me? “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much, I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted, and all unborn babies in danger of abortion. Archbishop Fulton J Sheen 4 Social Justice Corner - March 22 ,2015 Sir, we would like to see Jesus. John 12:20 How many times have we said those words? We've been taught that we can find Jesus in all we meet. Once we see divinity everywhere, it becomes impossible to close our eyes to the goodness and the suffering of any of God's creatures. We become spiritually linked, and if we turn away we not only tear at the link, we tear at our own humanity. Once we witness the suffering what do we do? “What do you do with what you actually find? When you truly open your heart to others, it can hurt to find God in the darkest and deepest depths of the human spirit. It's hard. It's overwhelming. It's pain and disappointment and anger and fear. Sometimes it feels like it would be better if you hadn't looked at all. Truly finding God in all things means taking on the burden of knowledge. They say ignorance is bliss, and they are right – having knowledge means accepting responsibility to act upon that knowledge. It means acknowledging that a connection has been forged between you and someone else and that you are bound to them in a covenant - a promise that you will work together and use your knowledge to make change, in the spirit of love and humanity.” from “Learning to Carry the World” by Casandra L. Agredo, LMSW in Igniting Our Values, a Jesuit online program “Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.” quote by Andrew Boyd, author and activist. In a small way, we can remain bound to the world's poor by helping Catholic Relief Services in their programs to enable the poor to lift themselves out of poverty. Please continue to fill your Lenten Rice Bowls. They will be collected the weekend after Easter. Checks can be made payable to St. Anthony's. Please write, “Rice Bowl” on the memo line. Lenore Isleib [email protected] Social Justice Committee Here’s to Your Health with Sheila Conway (Consult your Physician before making any changes to your exercise or diet regimen.) Vitamin D is crucial to bone, skin and mental health, but are you getting enough? Here are some signs that you might need more. Your bones ache. Especially in winter, [vitamin D deficient] adults feel more achiness in bones and muscles and joints are a little more stiff when they get up in the morning. You've got the blues. Vitamin D seems to improve levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin which in turn could lift your spirits. You're 50 or older. The skin simply doesn't make as much vitamin D as you get older, and the kidneys start to grow a little less productive when it comes to converting that D into the form the body puts to good use. Older adults may also spend more time indoors. You're overweight or obese. There's no change in vitamin D production in people carrying excess weight, but the higher concentration of body fat affects the levels of vitamin D in the blood. You have darker skin. Studies have shown distinct demographic differences in rates of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency. Your skin pigment is natural sunscreen. Someone with very dark skin needs up to 10 times the amount of sun exposure than someone with a very pale . You're a big-time head sweater. No joke, It's one of the first, classic signs of vitamin D deficiency. You have gut trouble. People with Crohn's, celiac or inflammatory bowel disease may be a greater risk for vitamin D deficiency because of the way these gastrointestinal conditions affect fat absorption. With these and other stomach issues, fat absorption can be lower, but that in turn lowers absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like D. So how can you get your D safely? Sensible sun exposure is key, since D production only occurs on unprotected skin. If you know you're likely to get a mild sunburn after 30 minutes outside without sunscreen, venture out for about 10 to 15 minutes and then put your sun protection on. Expose arms, legs, abdomen and back if you can, for max vitamin D production. And keep in mind depending on where you live, you may only make vitamin D for part of the year due to the angle of the sun. Source: everydayhealth.com/news/signs-you-may-have-vitamin-d-deficiency/ CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION FOR ADULTS Confirmation is one of three Sacraments of Initiation. It seals us with the gift of the same Holy Spirit that Jesus sent upon his disciples at Pentecost. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Pentecost - Sunday May 24th. 5 Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund MINISTRIES A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now have only 6 more payments to make totaling $50,681.16 that will be paid off in August of 2015. With the last payment, we look forward to celebrating the retirement of our mortgage! Along with these important loan payments we continue to provide the proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced substantially this year over the previous several. Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs there still are plans for several projects that will require substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need to be addressed, along with our sound and computer system and backup power. Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that will enable us to make these necessary improvements, which is why your continued support of the Building/ Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best condition. Anthonian Seniors: St. Anthony of Padua Parishioners 50 years and older are welcome to join our Senior Club. Please call Angie Cruz 609–448–2511, or come to a meeting. Please remember the Parish in your Wills and in your Estate Planning. Catholic Annual Appeal Each year at this time, we reach out to you and ask you to partner with us through the Annual Catholic Appeal. A gift to the annual appeal helps fund the vital ministries, programs and services of 109 parishes within the diocese. Your generous contribution helps support youth and family ministries, catholic education, vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and the charitable works of our extended diocesan family. You will find pledge cards and envelopes in the church foyer for use in making your gift. We sincerely thank you for your past and future generosity. We can be proud of our catholic faith and together our gifts can help further the vital work of our church.
