Religion runs deep for many NFL players and teams
After seemingly every NFL game, it has become almost
cliché to hear players praise God and credit their faith.
But religion in the NFL goes much deeper than what is
visible on the surface, players and team chaplains say.
The importance of religion is embedded in the fabric of
franchises, a tangible part of the weekly routine. Teams
across the league have chaplains or other religious
figures who lead services and often travel with the
team, helping establish rituals players and coaches use
for emotional and spiritual support. Historically, Evangelical Christian players, specifically, have been outspoken about their faith and used their platform in the
NFL to spread their beliefs.
Faith and football — with themes of adversity, dedication and striving to improve — have always seemed
tied together. Players and pastors frequently use themes
of war to describe the physical and spiritual battles
they encounter on the field and against sin. The NFL
and faiths such as Christianity and Catholicism share
Sunday as their marquee day.
During the long, physically and emotionally draining
hours of the NFL week, players say Bible studies and
chapel services provide order and help clear their
minds. Players often draw a powerful sense of comfort
and strength from leaning on their religion as game
day approaches.

First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20
Prophecy for ancient Israel was mediation between
themselves and God. The true prophet is a native Israelite and called by God.
Second Reading: I Corinthians 7:32-35
Paul expresses the equality of men and women in his
discussion of sexual status in the community. He gives
clear advice but he does not impose solutions.
Gospel: Mark 1:21-28
Mark recounts in this chapter an eventful day in Capernaum, St. Peter’s home town. First, Jesus performs
an exorcism. But the main point for Mark is that the
same power that enables Jesus’ healing also underscores the authority of His teaching.

Director’s Corner:
“My God, I choose all. I do not want to be a saint by
halves. I am not afraid to suffer for you. I fear only one
thing-that I should keep my own will. So take it, for I
choose all that you will.”
St. Therese of Lisieux
In today’s Gospel, (Mark 1:21-28), Jesus is in Capernaum, which is located on the Northern shore of Galilee.
The unclean spirit calls Jesus the Holy One of God. Jesus
merely speaks a word and the spirit comes out. The people are taken aback by the way Jesus teaches with authority and commands the unclean spirit.
Altar Rosary Society
The Rosary is the story of the New Testament.
Through the beads we follow the life of Mary and
Jesus. We follow Mary from the day the Archangel
Gabriel came to ask her to become the Mother of
Christ, to the day she was crowned Queen of Heaven.
We follow Jesus from the moment the Holy Spirit
came down on Mary, through his childhood, his cruel death on the cross, the Joy of Easter when he rose
from the dead to the day he ascended to Heaven in
Glory. (From Crown of Thomas, England)
The Altar Rosary Society will resume meetings
beginning February 3. Join us at 7pm. in the
Chapel with a Eucharistic Service and recitation of the Rosary. All are welcome! A business
meeting follows in the Community Room.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Friday, February 6, there will be Eucharistic Adoration
in the chapel after the 9:00am mass from 9:30am to
7:00pm.
After the sacrifice of the Mass and the reception of Holy
Communion, visiting the Blessed Sacrament is one of
the richest sources of grace for souls. The memorable words of Pope St. Pius X, the Pope of the Eucharist, shows his regard for such visits. “The
daily adoration or visit to the Blessed Sacrament is the practice which is the fountainhead of all devotional works.” From the
booklet “The Holy Eucharist our all”
Come adore, praise, thank God for his love and
mercy. Bring your petitions to Him and ask for His
graces to do His will. Call Barbara McGeachen at
609-448-8399 to sign-up for Adoration.

Social Justice Corner - February 1, 2015
The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light;
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death,
light has arisen. Matthew 4:16
It's difficult, when listening to the nightly news, to focus
on the light rather than the darkness of violence and
suffering. Our world can certainly seem
“overshadowed by death.” Tragedy and death, in one
way or another, touch all of us. We may ask ourselves
what our loving God is doing while all of this tragedy is
taking place.
“All of us have to walk the human journey, some way,
some day – from the Neanderthals to those walking on
Madison Avenue today. All either have died or will
soon die. It is only the exact circumstances that change,
but it is the same 'One God who is Father of all, over all,
through all and within all' (Ephesians 4:6) who is taking all of this dying home. If not, the vast number of
very short lives – young soldiers who die in battle,
women in childbirth, Natives with smallpox, children
who starve to death, and the suffering of disabled bodies and tortured prisoners – make this world a major
Greek tragedy that is almost impossible to imagine as
any kind of victory for God or for anybody else.
“The Crucified One is God's standing solidarity with the
suffering, the tragedy, and the disaster of all time, and
God's promise that it will not have the final word.
The Risen One is God's final word about the universe
and what God plans to do with all suffering.” from The
Immortal Diamond by Father Richard Rohr
Those of us who believe in God's final word are called to
stand in solidarity with the rest of suffering humankind.
The opportunities are endless. Among our neighbors
who have patiently waited for the tragedy of racism to
end are people of color. Since the 60's and Dr. King's “I
Have a Dream” speech much has changed for blacks in
the US. However, much has remained the same or even
worsened.
You are invited to gather at Mount Olivet Baptist
Church on Thursday, February 12th, at 7 PM to watch
and listen to Dr. King's “I Have A Dream” speech. The
25 minute DVD will be followed by discussion: What
were King's dreams? What still needs to be done to fulfill those dreams?

Super Bowl Faves Done Lighter
When it comes to the big game, the action on the snack
table is almost as important as the players on the field.
While many healthy eaters accept defeat and chalk it up
to a day of indulgence, there's no need to throw your
healthy diet out the window to enjoy your favorite football snacks. With the right tricks up your sleeve, you
can serve up the delicious Super Bowl classics that
everyone looks forward to, without overloading on
fat and calories.
Nachos: There are tons of great ways to get your
ooey gooey nacho fix without ending up looking a
little ooey gooey yourself. With a little low-fat cheese
and chips, and ground turkey instead of beef, you're
well on your way to a guilt-free nacho plate. Skip the
sour cream and swap in Greek yogurt or cottage
cheese, and don't skimp on the fresh veggies
and spices. Yum!
Chili: Chili is the ultimate game day classic — and it's
also easy to rehab into a lower-calorie version. By cutting back on the sodium with leaner beef and throwing
in a few nutritious ingredients, better-for-you chili is as
easy as a few swaps at the grocery store.
Pizza: Have some pizza lovers at the party? Change up
your pizza game plan by subbing in mashed beans for
traditional pizza sauce or pesto.
Meatballs: Meatballs are another fan favorite and when
done right they can be healthy and delicious. Try swapping out the beef for a leaner meat like lamb or turkey.
Or cut calories by using Panko breadcrumbs instead of
regular breadcrumbs.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
MINISTRIES
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 9 more payments to make totaling $76,021.74
and will be paid off in August of 2015. Along with these
important loan payments we continue to provide the
proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our
buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the
while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud
to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced
substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.

909 Days that Changed the World
One of our daily Mass attendees, Bob Dunne, has selfpublished a new book titled 909 Days that Changed the
World, a chronological account of the two and half years
of Jesus’ public ministry as they likely happened. “Jesus
Christ will become more alive, more human as the reader
walks along with him and sees how his ministry unfolds
day by day, week by week,” explains Bob. Bishop O’Connell says; “In a succession of short but accessible chapters,
Bob succeeds in bringing the four Gospels together…so
much so that my studies and reading and preaching of
many years found still more about Him to inform my sermons and, more personally, to nourish my soul. If spiritual reading can still offer a "wow factor" after all these
years, Bob's writing does it.” Reading the book could be a
great Lenten resolution. Bob will be here in the gathering
space after Masses on February 7th and 8th to offer his
book for sale ($16 with sales tax). It can be also bought
online from his publisher Leonine Press, Barnes and Noble,
or Amazon.

III DOMINGO ORDINARIO (Marcos 1:14-20)
y liberadora, no autoritaria y esclavista.. Una comunidad
dominada por los espíritus de impureza y por las enseñanzas
autoritarias es una comunidad excluyente, no incluyente;

Gracias
(Solamente para la primera semana).
