ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only
who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the
faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age,
the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly
already arrived. (CCC 1514)
If a person is in need of Anointing of the Sick, please call the
parish office for a priest at 602-242-1300.
If the parish office is closed and there is an immediate danger
of death, please call the after-hours emergency number at
602-246-3534. The after-hours number may only be used for life
and death emergencies.

A Letter from Our
Cathedral Rector
Dear Parishioners,
This coming week (Monday – Friday) I will be in Chicago, continuing my training in Contemplative Spiritual Direction
through the Institute for Priestly Formation (IPF). I’m very excited about this next week of training, because virtually
everything I plan to offer in the Lenten “Teaching Tuesday” series is based on what I’ve learned so far in this program.
I’m sure I’ll pick up a few more spiritual gems to share with you from this coming week!
I also need to clarify something that some of you have asked me about. While we are offering the Teaching Tuesday
classes after the Tuesday 6:30PM Mass, you are not required to go to that Mass in order to attend the class. Of course,
I can think of no better preparation for the sessions than participating in Mass, yet I realize that some people can’t
make it here by 6:30PM (Mass), but can make it by 7:30PM (class). So...if you can only make it to the class, then, by all
means, come to the class!
I also want to offer another “teaser” for the series.
A few months ago, a young parishioner who was struggling with his Catholic faith, and who had “dabbled” in some other Christian churches, met with me to figure out what to do. He had found the Protestants and Evangelicals he encountered during his “search” to be much more enthusiastic about their personal relationship with Jesus than pretty much all
of the Catholics he knows, yet, he remained conflicted because those denominations do not have the Eucharist and the
other Sacraments like the Catholic Church. This is not an uncommon experience, by the way.
In the course of our conversation, I showed him how to enter into a personal, prayerful encounter with the Lord—the
same as I’m going to teach in much more detail in the Lenten series—and it hit him like a semi! I asked him if he had
ever had an encounter like that in prayer—as a Catholic—and he said, “No”. So, I assured him that it’s not an either/or
proposition—either have a personal relationship with Jesus in a Protestant or Evangelical Church; or have the Sacraments in the Catholic Church.
And that’s one of my main motivations for offering this series. The Catholic Church has the fullness of the means of
salvation precisely because Jesus Christ founded it. In other words, everything we need for a profound, personal
relationship with Jesus is right here under our noses—in the Catholic Church. We don’t need to go hunting elsewhere
for it. We just need to learn how to “tap into” this spiritual treasure house that is the heritage of every Catholic.

Ministry
My name is Maggie Wyse and I am a
sophomore at ASU. I am a graduate of
Xavier College Prep and SSJ. I have
been a part of the SSJ community my
entire life. In the past, I have been
fortunate to be a part of a few missions to Mexico, as well
as the South Africa Mission in 2013.
Going to South Africa truly changed my life and my entire
outlook on the world. I had the opportunity to learn about
the devastation of the apartheid and the amazing work of
Nelson Mandela. I learned about all of this in history class
at school, but being able to see it all first hand was
indescribable. I want to do everything I can to continue
God’s work and make this world a better place for
everyone.
When I learned the young adults of the SSJ community
were embarking on another mission to South Africa
I truly felt called to go back. I hope to change another
family’s life by providing them with love and home to live
in. On past missions, I have seen people living in
cardboard boxes, making the best of the very little they
have. When we provide some of these people with small,
but sturdy homes, the appreciation they have is
amazing. Every person I have met on these missions has
opened my heart and helped me realize God’s call for me
to serve others.
This mission to South Africa simply would not be possible
without the prayerful and financial support of our
wonderful Saints Simon & Jude community. If you feel led
by the Holy Spirit to support this mission, please drop off
donations at the parish office. There will also be a second
collection at all Masses April 11 & 12, 2015. Thank you
for your generosity!

Please pray for the poor and suffering, knowing that you
are bringing the love and peace of Jesus to those who
live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. Many times
when folks come to the Pantry for help with a food box,
we always pray, listen to their stories, help them with
suggestions or referrals to other places where they might
be helped, and then we pray together. God touches their
hearts with tears of hope and love, and touches our
hearts as well.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul sends out a huge thank
you to all the students, faculty and staff at Ss. Simon and
Jude school for the wonderful Food Drive they recently
had to help the poor and fill our Pantry shelves. They
surprised us with boxes and bags of food, delivered them
and helped fill our shelves. May God bless all of you for
your generosity and hard work.

Una Carta de Nuestro

Queridos feligreses,
Esta semana que viene (lunes - viernes) estaré en Chicago, continuando mi formación en la dirección espiritual
contemplativa a través del Instituto para la Formación Sacerdotal (IPF). Estoy muy entusiasmado con esta próxima
semana de entrenamiento, ya que prácticamente todo lo que tengo intención de ofrecer en la serie "La Enseñanza
Martes" de Cuaresma está basada en lo que he aprendido hasta ahora en este programa. Estoy seguro de que voy a
recoger unas cuantas jollas espirituales para compartir con ustedes esta semana que viene.
También tengo que aclarar algo que algunos de ustedes me han preguntado. Mientras estamos ofreciendo las clases de
Enseñanza los Martes después de la Misa de 6:30 p.m. los martes no es requisito ir a la Misa con el fin de asistir a la
clase. Por supuesto, no puedo pensar en una mejor preparación para las sesiones que participar en la Misa, pero me
doy cuenta de que algunas personas no pueden llegar aquí a la Misa de 6:30 P.M., pero pueden llegar a las 7:30 PM
(clase). Así que ... si sólo se puede llegar a la clase, entonces, de todas maneras vengan a la clase.
También quiero ofrecer otro "gancho" para la serie.
Hace unos meses, un feligrés joven que estaba luchando con su fe católica, y que había "experimentado" en algunas
otras iglesias cristianas, se reunió conmigo para averiguar qué hacer. Había encontrado a los protestantes y evangélicos
que encontró durante su "búsqueda" a ser mucho más entusiastas acerca de su relación personal con Jesús que casi
todos los católicos que conoce, sin embargo, permaneció en conflicto porque esas denominaciones no tienen la
Eucaristía y los otros sacramentos, como la Iglesia Católica. Esto no es una experiencia poco común, por cierto.
En el curso de nuestra conversación, le enseñé cómo entrar en un encuentro de oración personal con el Señor, lo
mismo que voy a enseñar con mucho más detalle en la serie de Cuaresma y lo golpeó como un troca! Le pregunté si él
había tenido un encuentro en la oración-como católico, y él dijo: "No". Por lo tanto, yo le aseguré que no es una sí o no
proposición, ya sea tener una relación personal con Jesús en una iglesia protestante o evangélica; o tener los
sacramentos en la Iglesia Católica.
Y esa es una de mis principales motivaciones para ofrecer esta serie. La Iglesia Católica tiene la plenitud de los medios
de salvación precisamente porque Jesucristo la fundó. En otras palabras, todo lo que necesitamos para una relación
profunda y personal con Jesús está aquí en nuestras narices-en la Iglesia Católica. No necesitamos ir a cazar a otro
lugar para ello. Sólo tenemos que aprender a "golpear ligeramente en" este tesoro espiritual que es patrimonio de todos
los católicos.

SAN VICENTE DE PAUL
Por favor, oren por los pobres y el
sufrimiento, sabiendo que usted está
trayendo el amor y la paz de Jesús a los que
viven en el miedo y la duda, la soledad y el
temor. Muchas veces, cuando la gente viene a la
despensa en busca de ayuda con una caja de comida,
siempre oramos, escuchar sus historias, les ayudan con
sugerencias o referencias a otros lugares en los que
podrían ser ayudados, y luego rezan juntos.
La Sociedad de San Vicente de Paúl envía un gran
agradecimiento a todos los estudiantes, profesores y
personal de Ss. Simón y Judas escuela para la colecta de
alimentos recientemente que tenía que ayudar a los
pobres y llenar nuestros estantes de la despensa. Nos
sorprendieron con cajas y bolsas de comida, los
entregaron y ayudaron a llenar nuestros estantes.
