ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only
who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the
faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age,
the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly
already arrived. (CCC 1514)
If a person is in need of Anointing of the Sick, please call the
parish office for a priest at 602-242-1300.
If the parish office is closed and there is an immediate danger
of death, please call the after-hours emergency number at
602-246-3534. The after-hours number may only be used for life
and death emergencies.

Happy Easter!
In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul wrote:
If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the
dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. (Rom 8:11)
This statement captures the essence of what Easter means for each baptized Christian. Understanding what it implies
for us in striving to live as Catholics with integrity is critically important.
Perhaps an analogy will help make this clearer. Let’s say we want to get from Earth to the moon. To get our space
“vehicle” through Earth’s atmosphere and into space, we’re going to need a very powerful engine. Now, would the most
powerful automobile engine on the market—say, a Dodge Challenger engine—give us enough of a boost to make the
trip? Obviously the answer is “No”. We need a very different form of propulsion to achieve our objective. We need
rocket power.
In an analogous way, when we are planning to complete our “mission” to Heaven, some might argue that all that is
necessary is to be a “good person”. But such a claim demands that we answer this question honestly: Whose
definition of “good” do we use? For some, a good person is someone who gives a lot of money to charity. But what
if a person gives money to charity, not because he or she cares about the organization’s mission, but rather, because he
or she has a big ego and wants admiration? “Good” is a relative term, then, isn’t it?
It takes a lot more than being “good” to get to Heaven. It takes holiness. To drive this point home, I asked a group of
high-school students on a Lenten retreat a few weeks ago how many consider themselves to be a “good person”. Every
one of them raised their hand. When I asked, “How many of you are holy?” only one student even started to raise his
hand—hesitated—and then put it back down. My next question: “What’s the difference...what distinguishes a ‘good’
person from a ‘holy’ person?” After a rather extended discussion, we all concluded that the difference is not a thing, but
a person...and his name is Jesus. Our relationship with Jesus is what makes us holy.
Now, let’s go back to St. Paul’s statement above. It is only Jesus, dwelling in our souls, who gives us enough
“propulsion” to make the journey from this life to Heaven. Human power alone is simply insufficient. That’s why, in the
Gospel of John, Jesus said:
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can
you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it
is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (Jn 15:4-5)
Apart from Jesus we can do...nothing! Being apart from Jesus (i.e. cut off from his very presence in our souls because
of mortal sin) drains whatever we do of its goodness. On the other hand, with Jesus firmly reigning in our souls, we can
not only do good things, but most especially, holy things.
It is because Jesus conquered death itself by rising from the dead, combined with the fact that we become actual
members of his Body when we are baptized, that it is possible for us to likewise conquer death and spend eternity with
Jesus and with our loved ones in Heaven. Our connection to Jesus is the only way to Heaven.
For far too many Catholics, Easter is merely one somewhat special day among many. In reality, Easter commemorates
the most important thing that has ever happened to us: namely, that we have received—as a gift and as a sign of God
the Father’s love for us—the only means by which we can make it to Heaven.
Now that’s worth celebrating!

assistance. Arizona law (ARS 43-1089) allows you to make individual
charitable contributions to school tuition organizations by redirecting
your State of Arizona tax liability on a dollar for dollar basis and any
Arizona taxpayer, single or married, with an Arizona tax liability can
participate.
How do you know if you have a tax liability?
Everyone pays state income taxes (unless you are taking a loss or don’t
have earned income). Even if you receive a refund you are paying state
income taxes. Any amount under the current maximums will receive a

Estimados Feligreses, ¡Felices Pascuas!
En su Carta a los Romanos, San Pablo escribió:
Y si el Espíritu de aquél que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos habita en ustedes, aquel que resucitó a
Cristo de entre los muertos, dará también la vida a sus cuerpos mortales por su Espíritu que habita en
ustedes. (Rom 8:11)
Esta declaración captura la esencia de lo que significa la Pascua para cada Cristiano bautizado. El entender lo que
implica para nosotros para así esforzarnos a vivir como Católicos con integridad, es seriamente importante.
Quizás una analogía que ayudaría a aclarar esto. Vamos a decir que queremos ir de la Tierra a la luna. Para poder
atravesar nuestro “vehículo” especial por medio de la atmósfera de la Tierra hacia el espacio, vamos a necesitar un
motor muy poderoso. Ahora, vamos a decir que el motor automovilístico más poderos del mercado—digamos, un motor
de un Dodge Challenger— ¿Nos daría suficiente empuje para el viaje? Obviamente la respuesta es “No”. Necesitamos
una forma muy diferente de propulsión para obtener nuestro objetivo. Necesitamos poder de cohete.
En una manera analógica, cuando estamos planeando completar nuestra “misión” al Cielo, algunas personas pueden
argumentar que todo lo que se necesita es ser una “buena persona”. Pero tal declaración demanda que contestemos
esta pregunta honestamente: ¿Cuál definición de “bueno” utilizamos? Para algunos, una buena persona es alguien
que da mucho dinero a la caridad. ¿Pero qué si la persona da dinero a la caridad, no porque le interese la misión de la
organización, pero porque él o ella tiene un ego muy grande y quiere admiración? “Bueno” entonces es un término
relativo ¿o no?
Toma más que ser “bueno” para llegar al Cielo. Toma santidad. Para demostrar esto, le pregunté a un grupo de
estudiantes de secundaria en un retiro de Cuaresma hace unas semanas, que si cuántos de ellos se consideraban
“buenas personas”. Cada uno de ellos levantó su mano. Cuando pregunté ¿Cuantos de ustedes son santos?” solamente
un estudiante comenzó a levantar su mano —dudoso—y luego la bajó. Mi próxima pregunta: “¿Cuál es la diferencia…
que distingue a una ‘buena’ persona de una ‘santa’?” Después de una discusión bastante extensa, todos concluimos en
que la diferencia no es una cosa, sino una persona...y su nombre es Jesús. Nuestra relación con Jesús es lo que nos
hace santos.
Ahora, regresemos a la declaración de San Pablo anteriormente. Es solamente Jesús el que mora en nuestras almas,
quien nos da suficiente “propulsión” para hacer la jornada de esta vida hacia el Cielo. El poder humano es sencillamente
insuficiente. Es por eso que en el Evangelio Según San Juan, Jesús dice:
Permanezcan en mí, como yo en ustedes. Lo mismo que el sarmiento no puede dar fruto por sí mismo, si
no permanece en la vid; así tampoco ustedes, si no permanecen en mí. Yo soy la vid, ustedes los
sarmientos. El que permanece en mí, y yo en él, éste da mucho fruto; porque separados de mí no pueden
hacer nada. (Jn 15:4-5)
Apartados de Jesús no podemos hacer...¡nada! Estar apartados de Jesús (por ejemplo cortando su presencia de
nuestras almas por un pecado mortal) seca cualquier cosa que hagamos de su bondad. Por otro lado, con Jesús
reinando firmemente en nuestras almas, no tan solo podemos hacer cosas buenas, pero especialmente cosas santas.
Es porque Jesús venció a la muerte al resucitar entre los muertos, combinado con el hecho de que nos convertimos en
miembros de su Cuerpo cuando somos bautizados, que es posible para nosotros al igual vencer la muerte y pasar la
eternidad con Jesús y con nuestros seres queridos en el Cielo. Nuestra conexión con Jesús es el único camino al Cielo.
Para muchos de los Católicos, la Pascua es sencillamente un día algo especial entre otros. La realidad es que la Pascua
conmemora lo más importante que nos ha sucedido: específicamente, que hemos recibido—como un regalo y una señal
de Dios como Padre que nos ama—la única manera por la cual podemos llegar al Cielo.
Ahora, ¡Eso vale la pena celebrarlo! Las bendiciones de Dios, mis oraciones...

 Clases de ciudadanía La comunidad Cruzada de
Phoenix está organizando su serie de clases de
ciudadanía para aquellos interesados en
aprender los conceptos básicos de convertirse en
un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos, y para
aquellos que deseen desarrollar sus habilidades
en inglés. La serie tiene una duración de seis
sábados consecutivos en abril 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 y
mayo 7, 2016. La información proporcionada
incluirá la preparación para el examen y la
entrevista. Las clases se dan en Inglés por el
hermano Jim Lewandowski, osc. Las clases
empiezan a las 9:30 a.m. hasta las 11 am en la
Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia en Phoenix. Las
clases son gratuitas (con una tarifa única de $7

Dirija los dólares de sus impuestos para ayudar los estudiantes de SSJ
¿Está usted en proceso de preparar su declaración de impuestos? Por favor
recuerde que el Estado de Arizona ofrece cada año a los contribuyentes la
oportunidad de participar en dirigir sus impuestos para ayudar a los estudiantes
de la Escuela de San Simón y Judas quienes requieren de asistencia matricular. La
ley de Arizona (ARS 43-1089) le permite hacer contribuciones de caridad
individuales para organizaciones de matrícula escolar, al dirigir su contribución de
impuestos del Estado de Arizona basado en dólar por dólar, y cualquier
contribuyente de Arizona, soltero(a) o casado(a), con responsabilidad fiscal en
Arizona puede participar.
¿Cómo saber si tiene una responsabilidad fiscal?
Todos pagan impuestos estatales (a menos que usted haya tenido una pérdida o
no ha tenido ingreso). Incluso si recibe un reembolso, usted está pagando
impuestos estatales. Por favor, dígale a su preparador de impuestos que usted quiere ayudar a los estudiantes de San
Simón y Judas y que por favor le ayude a determinar la cantidad que usted puede contribuir. Cualquier cantidad

CAMPAÑA DE CARIDAD Y DESARROLLO

La Campaña Anual de Caridad y Desarrollo ya empezó.
Gracias a las 123 familias quienes ya donaron. Cada una
de las donaciones es importante y da ayuda vital a los
programas y organizaciones que cuentan con el CDA.
Los fondos del CDA les permiten proveer servicios y
recursos críticos a nuestras parroquias, diócesis y
comunidades locales.
