ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE 7:00 AM—PRAYER SERVICE WITH DISTRIBUTION OF ASHES DURING SERVICE 8:30 AM– MASS WITH DISTRIBUTION OF ASHES DURING MASS 5:00 PM—PRAYER SERVICE WITH DISTRIBUTION OF ASHES DURING SERVICE 7:30 PM—MASS WITH DISTRIBUTINO OF ASHES DURING MASS 2 - 174 3 - 174 4 - 174 MASS INTENTIONS & EVENTS FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 1ST Dear Parishioners, In our first reading this weekend, we hear once again how God cared for His people by telling Moses that He would send the Israelites another prophet after Moses died who would speak for God and lead the people as Moses did. Joshua was the chosen leader after Moses. Throughout salvation history, God has not missed a beat in continuing to lead and guide humanity in the way to live by sending prophets, leaders, saints, many times, very ordinary people who speak for God and try to show us the way to Him. We know much like Israel of Old, we don’t take their messages seriously or we ignore them completely which in the end hurts no one but ourselves. Yet God continues to try to speak to us through other people. This week let us pray for each other that we will open our hearts and spirits to hear the messages coming to us through people around us who speak for God not the world. THE MISSION OF LOVE The Bible is not sentimental about marital love 28 - 30. Just like real marriage, the “marriage between God and his people can be rocky.” In the Old Testament, metaphors such as betrothal and marriage are used to describe God’s relationship with Israel. At the same time, when Israel falters and turns away from God, the prophets use the metaphors of “adultery and prostitution” to describe Israel’s behavior. But God, like a good ‘husband’ never gives up on Israel. On the contrary, in despite of their sinfulness and of their worshipping idols, He forgives. Furthermore, He pursues them with great compassion. This is the kind of Christian love that we are called to emulate. A love that is deeper. “It includes the erotic and affective, but it is also a choice.” It is the committed response to God’s call to love. To learn how to love unconditionally, we need to get to know God. We need to pursue the things of God. The Sacraments of the Church, spiritual reading and works of mercy, all point out to God’s way of love. Only when we understand and learn how endless is God’s love for us, will we be able to love the other faithfully, sacrificially and selflessly. Questions: 1. Meditate on your marriage and your relationships. Is your love self-giving and for-giving? 2. Suggestion: read 1 Corinthians, Ch. 13 Love Is Our Mission- The Family Fully Alive. Our Sunday Visitor, 2014. 25-26. Print. We have been hearing the news about the “World Meeting of Families” that is to be held in Philadelphia in September 2015 with the visit of Pope Francis. Over the next year we will be putting information in our bulletin and on our website, Facebook, twitter, and instagram about how to participate in the great event. Volunteers are needed!!
