VISION STATEMENT
Connect ~ Grow ~ Serve
MISSION STATEMENT
We strive to be a Spirit-led, mission-minded community of Christians,
a bedrock for the faithful in an uncertain world
and a safe pasture for all of God’s lambs.
Celebrating the heritage of our historic setting
and our faith as disciples of Jesus Christ,
we worship, teach, enjoy fellowship, practice stewardship,
and reach out to our Mount Vernon community and the world.
Welcome to Heritage
We welcome you warmly to Heritage where we strive to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
Hearing devices, and large-print hymnals and bulletins are available upon request from
the ushers. Childcare is available for children 3 years and younger in our Nursery. During
rd
Worship, children 4 years old through 3 graders are invited to attend our Children in
Worship service in Classroom 1 & 2. At the end of each pew is the “Blue Book” — please
take a moment to write down your name and address, e-mail and pass it along the pew and
then pass it back for all to know who is sitting next to them. Please greet your neighbors at
the close of service!
If you still have trouble hearing when using one of the new hearing devices, please make
sure that the volume is up on the unit and wait a moment before rendering the unit faulty.
Please see one of the sound team members by the sound board if you have any questions.
Do you want to get a head start in preparing for Sunday worship? The Sunday bulletin is
posted on the Heritage website the previous Friday afternoon. A voice recording in mp3
format of Sunday’s sermon is posted online, normally by the same afternoon, at
www.HeritageChurchVA.org/sermons/.
You are invited to write your prayer requests (joys and concerns) on the prayer cards in
the pew racks. Please place them in the offering plate and they will be honored during the
Prayers of the People.
The term “voluntary” is used to denote a piece of music or improvisation for instrument,
played before, during, or at the end of a church service.
The liturgical term “Ordinary” means that which is standard, normative, usual, or typical.
Since Ordinary Time is not a season, this period allows Sunday to be preeminent. Twice
each year Ordinary Time is heightened by the extra-ordinary time of the Christmas and
Easter cycles. They are extra-ordinary in that they intensify the foundational doctrines of
incarnation and resurrection. The color for Ordinary Time is GREEN, signifying spiritual
growth (except on Communion Sundays when the color is white).

CALL TO WORSHIP
Pastor Davis
The invitation to worship is here: Our God has welcomed us into this place of worship,
we will respond with praise and thanksgiving.
Come, one and all to give praise and glory to our God —
As creation proclaims the greatness of God with all its beauty,
so we proclaim God with word and song.
Let us shout and sing and dance and pray — all to the glory of the one true God.
We accept your invitation to come, O God,
and we will respond with praise and thanksgiving.

CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy, patient and loving God: You have commanded us to be holy, yet holiness
seemingly eludes us. You have commanded us to be patient, but we count down
the minutes until tomorrow. You have commanded us to love, yet we are often
skeptical of people and guard our hearts with great caution.
Forgive us, merciful God. As your grace is greater than our failings, and your
mercy covers the greatest sin, help us surrender ourselves to you so we are able
to love fully, wait patiently, and be holy, through Jesus Christ our Lord; for it is in
his holy name we ask.

The peace of Christ be with you.

CALL TO OFFERING
Elder Van Davis
“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus
put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven
for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing” (Malachi 3:10).

OFFERTORY
We gather here in Jesus’ name, His love is burning in our hearts like living flame.
For through His loving Son the Father makes us one.
Come take the bread, come drink the wine, come share the Lord.
We’ll gather soon where angels sing, we’ll see the glory of our Lord and coming King.
Now we anticipate the feast for which we wait.
Come take the bread, come drink the wine, come share the Lord.
For He will feed us with His presence here, this bread and wine will do us good.
Our deepest hungers He will satisfy, for He is life and peace and rest and drink and food.
He joins us here, He breaks the bread. The Lord who pours the cup is risen from the dead.
The One we love the most is now our gracious host.
Come take the bread, come drink the wine, come share the Lord.
No one is a stranger here, ev’ryone belongs.
Finding our forgiveness here, we in turn forgive all wrongs.
We are now the family of which the Lord is head.
Though unseen He meets us here in the breaking of the bread.
— Bryan Jeffrey Leech (1984)

Announcements
Souper Bowl of Caring — Here is an opportunity to prove that youth can make a difference
in the world! Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday is our nation's largest youth-led effort in fighting
hunger and poverty in local communities. Heritage youth will be holding soup pots to collect
money for this effort after the worship service today. Our proceeds will go to Rising Hope
Mission on Richmond Highway.
As we are in the height of the flu season, instead of shaking hands with one another, we
invite you to pass the Peace of Christ by simply nodding to each other, or touching
someone’s shoulder or upper arm; and using these words which have been around the
Church for the last 2,000 years: “The peace of Christ be with you….”
Pastors Class — The Pastors grow group continues on Monday evenings, from 7:30 to
8:30 in the Library.
Dorcas Circle’s study is Reconciling Paul: A Contemporary Study of 2 Corinthians. They
will be studying Lessons 5 and 6 this month. Lesson 5 is entitled “Reconciliation and the
Whole Creation” (2 Corinthians 5:11-6:10), which expands the concept of reconciliation,
healing and transformation to a much broader context. Lesson 6 is entitled “The Aroma of
God Among Us” (2 Corinthians 2:14-17 and 6:14-7:1), which examines the connection
between these two passages in light of epiphany processions. Paul uses these processions
as a metaphor throughout his letter to clarify his authority and to emphasize that all followers
of Christ should show their faith through their actions. Being the aroma of God means
getting closer to others through acts of love and reconciliation, as we embody God’s
presence. Dorcas Circle will meet on Tuesday, February 3, at 7:00 P.M. at the home of
Lucy Willis. The coordinator for Dorcas Circle is Elizabeth Tolles who can be reached at
703-360-8083.
Lunch Bunch — The group will meet at the Viet House Restaurant located at 6226
Richmond Highway on Wednesday, February 4, at Noon. Try their outstanding
Vietnamese Noodle Soup called Pho (pronounced fuh), or any of their other delightful lunch
dishes, or simply munch on a scrumptious appetizer and have a Chai tea. Any way you
want, it’s always fun to have lunch together. RSVP to Elders Vivien or Richard Peterson
at 703-660-6988 or via email at [email protected]. On cold days there’s nothing
like a big bowl of delicious hot soup. Come out and bring a friend and warm up with us.
On Sunday, February 15, the Sanctuary Choir and the Marty Nau Quartet join to help
lead worship and celebrate Transfiguration of the Lord Sunday with vocal and instrumental
jazz and gospel music. Beginning in 2001, Worshipful Jazz Sunday has become a favorite
of our congregation on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and we encourage everyone to
invite or bring a friend or neighbor. This is a worship experience you don’t want to miss or
won’t soon forget!
The 2015 Per Capita contribution is $36.55 per member, a slight increase from 2014. For
convenience we suggest that you round up to an even $37. There is an offering envelop in
your boxes which you may use to designate your offering in support of Heritage’s
contribution to the administrative operations of the three councils of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) for a full year. Heritage supports the National Capital Presbytery, the Synod of the
Mid-Atlantic and the General Assembly. Thank you!

Today we pray for Europe:
Geography Area: 22,978,500 sq. km. 74% is in the Russian
Federation. This is 17% of the earth’s surface. Population:

Challenges for Prayer — Once the center of Christianity, Europe
now has a declining number of Christ followers. Yet, socio-cultural
trends are opening doors. Disillusionment with the emptiness of
enforced secularism and hyper-modernity leads to a new interest in faith. Presented rightly, Jesus
is of great appeal to such seekers. Upheaval and

Militant atheism with strong anti-Christian, antireligious rhetoric in some parts of the EU is strident and ugly enough in character to cause many
to reconsider questions of faith. The influx of non-Christian religions into Europe raises the issue
of the religious identity of Europe as a civilization, both in history and for the future. Christian
immigration has brought the presence of dynamic and lively congregations into nearly every part
of Europe. African, Caribbean, Latin American and Asian churches are bringing a new and muchneeded confidence to the Church scene, reminding all that Christianity is a truly global faith.
