so let’s
celebrate in

Welcome back
to Knox
With schools reopening, the
University Summer School under way
and many firms back at work, the
holiday period has felt way too short.
I am sad farmers are struggling
without rain, but it has been and
remains to date a glorious summer.
Ian Thomson’s Christmas Day photo,
above, which is similar to one of
three Knox photos in the Otago Daily
Times around Christmas, depicts a
wonderful moment in our worship.
Having read the story of the
birth of Jesus, we then sought to
find ourselves in the story. There
were emperors, rulers, wise ones,
shepherds, animals, inn-keepers, Mary, Joseph
and Jesus, and more.
Then we took “a family photo”.
It portrays who we are: people gathered by
the person of Jesus Christ and seeking with
courage to live his way. We are an increasingly
diverse Church engaging our communities.
One dimension of that is one of us, a university
student, undertaking short-term service with a
Presbyterian Church in Korea, part-funded by
Knox people.
His regular updates signal how Max has
adapted to sleeping on floors, on several
occasions being the only English speaker and
serving people escaping the terrible tragedy
in Syria. He has been teaching English to the
children of migrant workers and helping out
in an organisation supporting asylum seekers
and migrants. He is being changed by the
experience and we pray he will help us also be
transformed.
Recommencing in 2015 is a group for students
and young professionals, a pre-school music
group, children’s activities, women’s groups,
the men’s group, the choir, a range of worship
and a renewed website.
Knox is embarking on the new year with
anticipation and hope, a spirit I share.

Lenten Worship
at Knox:
The Worship Goal Group has been
working on a programme up until
Easter. There is going to be an exciting
mix of what has been customary or
usual, the customary with a twist, and
some new things.
The programme will provide a style of
worship which offers an opportunity
for participation, reflection and
contemplation.
Here is a sample of what is planned:
Shrove Tuesday (17 February): At the end
of the working day (at 7pm) come and
enjoy eating pancakes together.
Ash Wednesday Service: 30-minute service
Lent 1, outdoor service in Knox Park (weather permitting)
Communion and Worship: Seven Deadly Sins (Anger)
Concert: Italy: The Flowering Of The Renaissance The gala opening concert of the International Early Music Festival: St Kilda
Brass and a Madrigal group directed by David Burchell, music of Andrea and
Giovanni Gabrieli, Marenzio, Susato, Gesualdo and Monteverdi, at Knox.
Ash Wednesday (18 February, 7pm): A short
service focusing on two key images/
actions of ash and the Lord’s Supper.
22 February, 10am: An open-air service
with the theme relating to the First
Sunday of Lent — the temptation
of Jesus. Weather permitting, the
10am service is planned to be held on
the lawn with people bringing rugs
and seats. Music will be provided by
instrumentalists/brass players.
Palm Sunday (29 March, 10am): We hope
to share this time of worship with the
other churches who use our facilities.
We will start the service outside and
process into the church. 7pm: Special
music presented by the choir.
Thinking it over
“I will stand by you: not for duty, not for pity, not
for honour, but for love — trusting, protecting,
comprehending love.”
— Edith Galton Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, US
President from 1913-1921. (His second wife, she married
him in 1915 and is sometimes referred to as “the first
woman president of the US” because she had sole access
to the president during his long final illness.)
“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard

come and hear what leaders within our
community have to say.
Easter Services:
Maundy Thursday (2 April) 7pm: A
30-minute service of reflection.
Good Friday (3 April) 10am: An exploration
of the painful and “good” aspects of
Good Friday.
Easter Sunday (5 April) 10am and 7pm:
Communion will be celebrated at the

it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is
spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in
anything simply because it is found written in your
religious books. Do not believe in anything merely
on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do
not believe in traditions because they have been handed
down for many generations. But after observation and
analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason
and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then
accept it and live up to it.” — Buddha
Christmas at Knox
Christmas 2014 was
celebrated at Knox in
the traditional way,
with a decorated tree,
banners, candlelight
and carols — and
a new tradition: a
life-size nativity scene
located in the Knox
garden, as pictured,
right, in the Otago
Daily Times on
Tuesday, December
23 (with Kerry). The
diorama attracted
many favourable
comments.

January saw Kerry “casting
aspersion” (in a religious context,
this means sprinkling with water, as
opposed to baptism by immersion)
and dusting off the old church
hymn books for a paperless service.

Have fun at Knox Fair
The Knox Church Fair is going to be
held on Saturday, 14 March — that’s
only about six weeks from now!
Planning is already well under way.
Now is the time for you to:
• start collecting together those good,
sellable unwanted items;
• get seedlings established; and
maybe do some crafts for the craft
stall.
• We also encourage you to donate
sugar for the cake and sweet stalls.
Your support will be greatly
appreciated.
