A Message from One Volunteer to Another
What I love most about the Highlands is its wonderful neighborliness. From the day we moved in, those who live
around us have made us feel welcome and cared for. This hasn’t happened by accident. Our pioneering residents
made a point of getting to know one another and working together to have events and activities at which to socialize.
A newsletter was started, and a Social Committee and a Sunshine Committee were formed: one to keep everyone
informed, another to provide fun things to do, and another to assist and cheer when help was needed. Other, more
specific activities were started up by individuals who wished to share their interests and talents.
As time has passed the original planners, volunteers, and participants, by choice or necessity, have passed on the
torch to younger, more energetic residents to keep the spirit and fun in our “active” adult community alive.
Unfortunately, we are not replenishing our retiring workforce as fast as it is decreasing. Therefore, the beginning
of the New Year is a good time to consider some resolutions to ensure that the tone of our community remains
robust and entertaining. To do your part, please consider taking some of the following actions:
⇒ Extend a hand of friendship when you see someone you don’t recognize in the neighborhood. Introduce yourself
and consider inviting new residents to join you at an event or an activity.
⇒ Come to some of our community meals without a reservation and sit with people you don’t already know.
⇒ Attend community meetings and help make decisions about how things get done.
⇒ Participate and/or attend activities and events in which you have an interest. If there isn’t a group already
started, grab the initiative and start something new. It’s as simple as describing what you want to do and
posting it in the newsletter.
⇒ Volunteer to help with events or with the organization of existing activities. Suggest how something could be
done better with the activities in which you participate. Sign-up sheets are usually found on the bulletin board.
⇒ Join the Social Committee or take responsibility for some on-going tasks like leading the community meetings or
running a vote. The Social Committee has been down by two members for several months and no one has stepped
forward to help. Also, the community has a motion to vote on, but there is no one to supervise the balloting.
Please lend a hand to make the Highlands a place where you love to live. I do.

If we missed you, we’re sorry, but it’s because we don’t know of your special days. To ensure that you are
remembered, please submit your birthday and anniversary information to [email protected] or
drop a note in the Newsletter box on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.
Thank you………
The Ladies of the Sunshine Committee; want to thank everyone for their generosity towards the family we
adopted for Christmas.
We especially want to thank the residents who donated all the Christmas
decorations, the couples who bought 2 of the bikes, those who gave a
donation of money and the bake goods for our bake sale, and to the person
who allowed us to purchase many toys at the garage sale for a very reasonable
price.
The Grandmother has undertaken the overwhelming task of raising four young
(7, 5, 4, & 2) grandchildren but she does it with a very positive outlook and is
always looking on the bright side of life. It pleases my heart to be able to
help them at this time of the year. They went from having no Christmas, to
having a very Happy Christmas.
We live in a very caring community. We of the Sunshine Committee wish each and everyone of you a very
healthy New Year.

GARY GOODMAN
AMERICA’S PREMIER COMEDY
MAGICIAN & MENTALIST
Gary Goodman has fine-tuned his act to become one of the most
well rounded comic magicians and mind readers of today.
Goodman has been featured on television shows, luxury cruise
lines, night clubs, Fortune 500’s, and college campuses across the
globe. He has performed his comedy magic and mind reading for
numerous celebrities including Celine Dion, The Miami Heat, Regis
Philbin, Chris Evert, Keith Hernandez, Chevy Chase, Adam
Sandler and even Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes.
You will remember the Comedy Magic of Gary Goodman for as long as you live...or maybe even longer!
Gary Goodman’s Comedy Stage Magic, Mind Reading & Snow Illusion
An enchanted evening of sophisticated LAUGHTER, COMEDY MAGIC,
MIND READING & THE SNOW ILLUSION
Well tested humorous AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION routines with key members of the party
Visual Stage Magic
Phenomenal Mind Reading
Snow Illusion
PREPLANNED MUSIC compliments the show and enhances the humor.
This Snow Illusion will give you goose bumps and make your spine tingle. A
truly breathtaking moment as you watch snow fly from Gary’s fingertips
and flutter to the floor. He begins by telling a magical story about his
small son seeing snow for the first time. Gary will make believers out of
everyone with his ability to make snow appear “out of thin air.” The
imagery of this illusion will be etched in your memory forever.

LAST CALL TO BE PART OF THE GROUP ORDER FOR 2015 MAHJONGG CARDS
I am coordinating our Highlands group renewal once again but I have to have all payments by January 3rd. If you
miss the group order, you will need to order your card on your own. Card prices are the same as last year: $8.00 for
a standard print size card, $9.00 for a large print card.
If you wish to be included in our group order which generates a contribution to Everyday Blessings, please put your
remittance in an envelope with your name and amount enclosed on it and drop it off at my house no later than January
3rd. If paying by check, make it out to me because I submit a single payment for all cards.
Thanks so much for your participation to help our Everyday Blessings Charity.

New Social Committee Members Wanted
Unfortunately a couple of our Social Committee members recently resigned so we are now searching for
two new Social Committee members. This is a good time to “try on” membership on the Committee since
elections for a new Committee will be held this spring. If you are interested and willing to serve our
community as a member of the Social Committee, please get in touch with Phil Lear as soon as possible.
Having a full Social Committee is critical to the success of events staged here in the Highlands. Please
consider becoming a very active part of the Highlands by joining the Social Committee.
Touring the Tom and Mary James / Raymond James Financial Art Collection
In St. Petersburg on February 11th, 2015
We will car pool. A lunch stop will be included.
Please signup on the sheet on the clubhouse bulletin board
Contact Person: Pat Carey
The Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection, one of Florida’s largest private art
collections, consists of more than 2,400 works of art. It includes original paintings, sculptures and
graphics. More than 90% of the collection is owned by Tom James, Executive Chairman of Raymond
James Financial, and his wife, Mary James. Mr. James has selected almost every piece of artwork
himself. While some of the artists in the collection are now deceased, he believes buying works from
living artists helps to sustain them in their profession. The collection is on display at the firm’s
corporate headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Although the collection began in the late 1950s with predominantly American artists, primarily from
Florida, it has grown to include a variety of genres. In the mid-1980s, while on trips to Colorado and New
Mexico, Mr. James began to collect Western and Southwestern art. More than half of the collection now
consists of Western/Southwestern styles of art, including works by Earl Biss, Glenna Goodacre, Allan
House, Dave McGary, Dan Namingha and many members of the Cowboy Artists of America. Wildlife art
makes up about 25% of the collection, including works by Matthew Hillier, John Seerey-Lester and Al
Agnew. Other genres include Pop, Contemporary, Figurative, Sports Art, and Landscapes.
2015 Sebring Golf Outing — April 15th thru 17th
The trip this year again includes three rounds of golf, two breakfasts, two dinners,
and bag storage. The price this year is $249.72, an increase of only $10.68. We
hope to have another terrific turnout. We have a signup sheet in the community
clubhouse. Please remember your roommate at signup time. We will have a
meeting the first part of February to fill out reservation forms and send in
deposits for rooms. Any questions call or email me.
Thanks for your interest.

Happy New Year Everyone!
As 2014 comes to an end, Howard, Renee, Kurt, Ken, and I want to wish everyone a very happy and healthy New
Year. We want to thank everyone for decorating their homes for the Season. We all enjoyed the beauty of all
the lights at night, which made our Community look warm and festive.
Christmas was such a joy with all the gifts, candies and cards that we received. We thank you all so very much
for donating to Toys for Tots. Many children celebrated on Christmas morning because you gave of your time and
money to purchase a gift for them.
Please keep David and Sandra Neil in your thoughts and prayers. As all may know by now, Sandra took a tumble
and broke her leg during the Caroling outing. Thanks to Mariana and Don Marz for taking them to the airport,
they are back in Canada, and she has had surgery and sounds to be in good spirits. You can reach David and
Sandra by e-mail: [email protected].
With all that is happening in the news, we are blessed to be safe and sound in our homes, and thankful that we live
in a part of the world that still knows peace in our streets. Let us all continue to pray for our men and women
serving our Country.
*******************
There are a few item we need to remind everyone about.
Please drive carefully in our Community. The speed limit is 15mph.
Please remember our “PAPER ONLY” dumpster behind the kitchen is for newspaper, magazines, broken down
cardboard boxes, and paper products. If you have a large item that you are not sure how to dispose of, please call
the office for assistance.
Site Rent payments: If you are in doubt of how much you are to pay for site rent come Jan. 2015, PLEASE call or
come by the office and talk to me. I will be glad to give you the correct amount.
