In 2014, there were 30 fatalities recorded in farm related incidents in the Republic of Ireland. Our hope is that NISO, in co-operation with interested parties, can help drive improvements in safety standards on farms across Ireland. To this end, this seminar is targeting the farming community to adopt safer agricultural practices . He emigrated to America and worked in construction and bartending for twelve years. Peter returned in 1999 and took over the family farm. He worked full-time in the building industry and part-time farming. The building work ended in 2009 when Peter had a serious farm accident. He was hospitalised for nine months between recovery and rehab. Today Peter runs a suckler and tillage enterprise. He is married with four children ranging in ages from 9yrs to 20yrs. John McNamara, National Health and Safety Officer, Teagasc John is National Health and Safety Officer with Teagasc. He holds a Masters degree in Agricultural Science and a university Diploma in Safety, Health and Welfare at Work. He is currently finalising his PhD on adoption of health and safety by farmers in Ireland. His early career was spent as a trainer in mechanisation and crops at Teagasc Agricultural College where he subsequently became college principal. John leads a team of 30 Teagasc Health and Safety Officers who implement Teagasc health and safety programmes. Prof Michael Hynes Professor Michael J. Hynes, a chartered chemist (CChem) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), is a leading specialist in the area of analytical and environmental chemistry with an interest in occupational health and safety and in depth knowledge of regulations related to chemical substances. Michael also lectures on various aspects of Occupational Health and Safety to Engineering and Postgraduate degree courses. Prof Kevin Barry, Consultant Surgeon, Mayo General Hospital Kevin, a graduate of UCC, completed his basic surgical training at Galway University Hospital and obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in July 1990. He received further surgical training at prestigious US surgical institutions including The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Mayo Clinic. Prof Barry was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon and commenced Consultant practice at Mayo General Hospital in 1999. He is actively involved in all aspects of elective and Emergency General Surgery. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Mayo Medical Academy, an affiliate of the School of Medicine of NUI Galway. Ciarán Roche, Risk Manager, FBD Ciáran has been FBDs Risk Manager since 1999. He develops and implements strategies that are designed to reduce the number of accidents. He analysis’s claims portfolios and identifies issues of concern and the action that needs to be taken to address these issues. Ciáran devotes considerable time to risk management promotional and training initiatives, and writes all of the company’s risk management guidance booklets, safety brochures and best practice documents. He also represents FBD on the FSPAC (Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee to the HSA). Pat Griffin, Senior Inspector, Health and Safety Authority Pat’s initial career involved working in underground mining for over 10 years. Following a short period as an Industrial Engineer and Safety Consultant he joined the Health and Safety Authority (H.S.A.) in 1991. Pat is now the Senior Inspector in the Compliance and Prevention Division with responsibility for Agriculture, Forestry, Mining, Quarries and Explosives. Pat is on the Farm Safety Partnership and is involved in developing strategies and prevention material for the H.S.A.
