February 2015 COMING EVENTS Adapting to future trends one of key presentations at Eastern Ontario Dairy Days By Tom Collins MAXVILLE — Recognizing dairy trends and how to adapt will be a main attraction at Eastern Ontario Dairy Days in Maxville on Feb. 11 and Kemptville on Feb. 12 starting at 9:30 a.m. Gay Lea Foods Co-operative president and CEO Michael Barrett will cover topics such as ingredients used in milk and whether dairy farmers are better off working with one large co-op or a number of smaller co-ops, said event organizer Blair Murray of Murray Agri Consulting. Other topics include: • Strategies to optimize calf health and performance, by Kemptville College associate professor Dr. Trevor DeVries; • The exciting world of new product development, by Dairy Farmers of Ontario ethnic market specialist Nissim Avraham; and, • Balancing producer needs and market demands, by Dairy Farmers of Ontario general manager and CEO Peter Gould. Tickets are $25 and farmers register at the door. Go to www.eontdairydays.com. Organic farm day offers something for the conventional grower By Tom Collins CORNWALL — Even conventional growers could learn something at an all-organic workshop, says one of the organizers of Eco Farm Day. The 31st annual event, taking place in Cornwall on Feb. 28, will host 12 different discussions, including how weed control can be achieved in organic field crops through the use of crop rotations, cover crops and choosing the right tool at the right time. Organizer Colin Lundy of the Canadian Organic Growers said this was a good opportunity for both conventional and organic growers to learn a little something. “While the workshops really focus on organic production and management, these are all production and management techniques that conventional farmers can adopt without the assumption they’re going organic,” said Lundy. “As we see more and more, production techniques (such as longer crop rotations and integrating cover crops as pest and weed management methods) that were championed by organic producers are being adopted by conventional farmers.” Tickets are $60 if bought before Feb. 14 and $75 after, with a $10 discount for Canadian Organic Growers and Organic Meadow members. The 30th annual New York Farm Show at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse will include a robotic milker display, daily beef seminars, forestry workshops and about 420 exhibitors. Tickets are $5. But the biggest attraction this year will likely be the Italian company Roc bringing its new hay merger, which is a giant hay rake that can place 30 feet of cut hay into windrows. Roc offers several types of mergers, including the $150,000 RT 1220, the largest merger in the world. The merger lifts hay to a conveyor belt to create a windrow, whereas other machines drag the crop on the ground to the windrow. The Roc merger system causes less damage to hay, fewer rocks and dirt inside the windrow, and less hay loss, the company says. About 1,000 Ontario farmers trek south of the border to the see U.S. show each year. Overall attendance is about 25,000. For more, visit newyorkfarmshow.com. Sheep day to explore: What does the consumer want? By Brandy Harrison EMBRUN — Lamb may no longer be a high-end luxury but some sheep farmers are scratching their heads over what the new convenience-obsessed, onthe-go customer wants. “How important is the traditional leg of lamb roast anymore? How much time does today’s homemaker have to spend in the kitchen to prepare to a sit-down Sunday dinner?” asks Osgoode sheep farmer Colleen Acres, chair for district 10 of the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency. “We have to realize if we don’t get what the consumers want, they’re not going to pay us for our efforts the way we think we deserve to be paid.” The district’s sheep day on Feb. 21 aims to help sheep farmers take the guesswork out of raising lamb for changing consumer appetites with a panel that includes a lamb buyer and feedlot operator, an abattoir operator, and possibly a retailer. The panel will kick off a full day of speakers, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Knights of Columbus Hall at 5 Rue Forget in Embrun, southeast of Ottawa. Sheep farmers just weren’t aware that customers have been clamouring for more ready-made meals and may have a lot to learn, explains Acres, who runs Maple Meadow Farms with her husband, Dwayne Bazinet, and their three sons, Mitchell, Taylor, and Kieran. farmersforum.com B13 COMING EVENTS February 2015 Going by the tagline “how to build a better lamb,” the workshop is designed with new and experienced producers in mind.
