The Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell; on the third
day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and is seated
at the right hand of God the Father
almighty; from there he will come to judge
the living and the dead. I believe in the
Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church,
the Communion of saints, the forgiveness
of sins, the resurrection of the body and
life everlasting, Amen.
This is our Faith; This is the Faith of
the Church. We are proud to profess it
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen

Day of prayer for Victims of Trafficking
Thought for the week:
“Blessed are you Father for revealing
the mysteries of the Kingdom to mere
children” says our gospel acclamation.
Jesus reveals to us the mysteries of
God. A mystery is not something
we can never grasp or understand
but rather, it is that which we would
not know unless God had revealed
it to us. Today in the gospel we have
the image of Jesus teaching on the
Sabbath in the synagogue. His
listeners did not know that he the
Christ, only that he was a teacher;
but his teaching was different to the
scribes, it was revealing something
of the mystery of God himself and was
given with authority. The possessed
man - or rather Satan through him recognised God at work and realises
that Jesus has come to destroy evil
and restore the Kingdom. Jesus
silences him and casts out the evil
spirit to the astonishment of the crowd.
In this he reveals more of the mystery
of God and they ponder on this “new”
teaching. The Psalmist calls to Israel
to harden not their hearts and put
God to the test as they had done
while wandering the wilderness
between their rescue from slavery in
Egypt and the arrival in the Promised
Land. Jesus echoes that call as he
teaches and heals during his ministry.
Faith is believing without fully
understanding. Let us pray this week
that Christ will strengthen our faith
and help our understanding that we
may see more clearly what it is he
reveals to us.

ST THOMAS’, TEAN
Our architect, Andrew Capper, was
expected to meet with us during the
week to discuss the re ordering of the
sanctuary. I compiled this column
before the visit. He will be drawing up
detailed plans for submission to the
diocesan art/ architecture committee.
We will discuss these details and the
provision of a catering facility store in
the narthex at the monthly Parish
meeting on Wednesday 4th February,
(in church after morning Mass).
All are welcome to attend and join the
discussion.
Lottery subscriptions: Most of the
ticket holders have paid the sub for this
year, thank you. The usual subscribers
who missed payment have been
entered on good faith, so please settle
up this weekend.
Lenten Lunch on Ash Wednesday,
February 18th. This will be at Gorsty
Hill chapel community room from
12 noon. It's a shared lunch on basic
rations. We have been asked if each
person attending could take some
bread and butter to be shared. Don't
expect a Jamie Oliver or James Martin
spectacular. It is, after all, Lent!
POPE FRANCIS: “Christians are called to follow the example of Jesus in encountering, listening and working together with
others to spread the message of the Gospel in the modern world”, was Pope Francis’ message to members of all the different
Christian Churches gathered in the Basilica of Saint Paul, to mark the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. He told
the faithful gathered that the "desire for unity" of the disciples of Jesus is part of our "thirst not only material for water, but above all
our thirst for a full life, free from the slavery of evil and death." He went on to say that "Jesus is the fulfilment of God's promises
because it is he who gives to the Holy Spirit, the 'living water' that quenches our restless hearts, hungry for life, love, freedom,
peace : thirsty for God. Pope Francis continued on the theme of unity by saying that, “It is a bad thing that Christians are divided,
Jesus wants us united, one body. For this we must pray that the Holy Spirit bring us together again.” Joining the Holy Father were a
boy and a girl from the Catholic Action Rome movement who were part of a group of thousands in the square marking the annual
January "Caravan of Peace". They, along with Pope Francis launched white doves from the window of his studio. The Pope also
remembered the World Day for Sufferers of Leprosy, saying, “I express my closeness to all the people who suffer from this disease,
as well as to those who care for them, and to those who struggle to remove the causes of the disease, that is, living conditions
unworthy of man. Let us renew our commitment of solidarity to these brothers and sisters."
CHEADLE & DISTRICT FOODBANK: Volunteer meeting: Tues 10 Feb, 7.00 pm, in the Oakley Room (Guild Hall). It is a bring-aplate “do” (plus £1 to cover room hire). They will review all that has happened and been achieved in the first year, including current
status and ability to carry on helping those in a temporary crisis. This will be followed tea and biscuits and the chance for a quick
chat. An AGM will then be held, to select officers for the committee for 2015/2016. Most officers will be carrying on in the same
capacity. However, should you feel that there may be some capacity in which your abilities could be made use of on the committee,
then please put your name forward to Sue Helm (e: [email protected] / t: 753087. Similarly, if you feel that there is
someone who is being shy and yet would be an asset on the committee, then – with that person’s permission – put his/her name
forward, as above. More socialising will follow. Thank you for your continued generosity. To get involved please see Glenn or Chris.

Prayer for Educational Institutions
Eternal God
Bless all schools, colleges
and universities,
FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD: According to Jewish law, the firstborn male child belonged to God, and the
parents had to "buy him back" on the 40th day after his birth, by offering a sacrifice of "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons"
(Luke 2:24) in the temple (thus the "presentation" of the child). On that same day, the mother would be ritually purified (thus the
"purification"). St Mary and St Joseph kept this law, even though, since St Mary remained a virgin after the birth of Christ, she would
not have had to go through ritual purification. In his gospel, Luke recounts the story (Luke 2:22-39). On Monday 2nd February we
will celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession of
candles is included in the liturgy. It is known as a "Christmas feast" since it points back to the Solemnity of Christmas and many
Catholics practice the tradition of keeping out the Nativity crèche or other Christmas decorations until this feast.
that they may be lively centres

and grant that those who teach
and those who learn
may find you to be the source

through Jesus Christ our Lord.
