Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

Do you not know that in a race all the
runners compete, but only one
receives the prize? So run that you
may obtain it. Every athlete exercises
self-control in all things. They do it
to receive a perishable wreath, but
we an imperishable. So I do not run
aimlessly; I do not box as one
beating the air.

Penitential Psalms. The season of Lent begins with the Ash Wednesday Divine
Service. The apposition of ashes and Holy Communion will be included in this

►LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR:
The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany Jesus put preaching above healing (Mark 1:38). Paul felt compelled
to preach the Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:16). Also like Jesus, he made
himself “servant to all” (9:19). He empathized with people and
became like them as much as possible all for the sake of the Gospel
(9:20-23). People tempted to sin against life often find themselves in
difficult situations – afraid, alone, hopeless, in pain, depressed. The
need to hear God’s truth but spoken with empathy and love.

►Mid-Week Stewardship Thought
Glorifying God
God’s Word says that we are to praise and glorify
God from sunrise to sunset. “From the rising of the
sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be
praised! The Lord is high above all the nations, and
His glory above the heavens!” (Psalm 113:3-4). We
know that we give God praise and glory during our
worship services when we sing songs of praise and
offer our prayers to the Lord. All our thoughts,
words, actions, and deeds are to glorify Him. “So
whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all
to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Our goal
is to honor God and to bring Him glory in the way
we live our lives. We are to glorify the Lord in our
lifestyles—our work and our leisure. Whether we
are school teachers, plumbers, housewives, doctors, factory workers, or truck drivers, we are
to “…work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23).
Prayer: Lord, let my life give evidence to my faith and adoration of You. In Jesus’ name I
pray. Amen.
Blessings on your stewardship journey!

year is ‘Big City Mission-Tools For School’. I will have more later. Thank
you so much, Barb Beck.
LENTEN DINNER CAN BE FUNDED by Thrivent Action Team; if you are interested in
funding to assist with your purchase of food for your dinner, please see or call Lois Hesse at
820-6064. If you don’t have a Thrivent policy I can assist you as we have
many people with policies who can assist with this. The only requirement
would be for you to have a free will offering that would go to a non-profit
group. Several of the dinner groups can go together to use these funds as
the fund would be for $250 and can be used only for the dinner/dinners. The
first two dinners are going to be funded by Thrivent, if approved. Examples
of groups for your free will offering: church, for the preschool, Camp CILCA, food pantry,
Shadow House, Historical Society; or if you know of a person who needs like a tire, it could
be donated to them, or someone with unusual medical expenses.
6
Let’s work together to use these funds to help out our community.

►PERHAPS THERE IS an acquaintance in your life who needs you to build a stronger
friendship with him/her. Maybe it is your mechanic, your hair dresser, a neighbor or a person
at work or school. You are someone who can share the greatest Friend any of them will ever
have. Now is the time to intentionally build that friendship. Spend time with that person;
7
remember birthdays, anniversaries; share your times of joy and celebration with that person;
seek ways to help and encourage your friendship; and look for opportunities to point them to
Christ.
