Volume 11, Issue 02 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Office Information Pastor’s Perspective Church Pages Lake Shetek Green Lake Calendar 2 3 4-6 7 8 9 Never Stop Learning February 2015 Newsletter I once read an interview with a retired professor. His advice to anyone about keeping your mind active was, “Buy big books.” “Which books?” “It doesn’t matter. Buy big books.” Even though I wasn’t the one asking the question, I took the professor’s advice (as much as I could) and have surrounded myself with big books. What should you read for a devotion, which Bible is the best one, or, which commentaries should you read? The answer, I hope, reflects what the professor said: MANY. Read as many devotional books as you can, have several different translations of the Bible in your home or at your office, and read as many pages of commentaries of the Scriptures as you have time for—and then borrow time from something else and read some more. You may not agree with everything you read, but what’s the point in reading someone who simply states what you already think? Read big books. Many of them. Disagree or agree with the author; be challenged by what you read. Scripture tells us that the members of the early church “devoted themselves to the apostles teaching.” We read in Acts 17:11 that the ones in Berea “were more noble than those in Thessa- Event Hilights for February lonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” Read big books. Be challenged by them, question them, learn from them. Check them against the Scriptures. The Christian Church has a 2,000 year history of writing. Augustine, Athanasius, Origen, Clement, Chrysostom, Guibert of Nogent, Aquinas, Anselm, Luther, Melanchthon, Chemnitz, Walther, Pieper, Bonhoeffer, and many other Christian writers are well worth your time. If you are so led this Lenten Season to do something you may not be in the habit of, let me suggest reading a Big Book. A Big Book that gives glory to God and the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you don’t have any, the church has plenty in the library. ~February 7: First annual Tea & Ski at Lake Shetek. See page 7 for more information. ~Sunday, February 22: Lasagna Dinner at YMLC. Pastor Rena Peterson’s Office Hours: Thursday – Augustana Friday - Bergen Healing Waters Parish News Pastor Dave’s Perspective “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.” 3 John 2 Dear members of the Healing Waters Parish, 2014 has been a rollercoaster kind of year for this parish. You began the year in the call process, interviewed candidates and issued a call. This is in addition to celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the parish, installing us as your new pastors, and tending to ministry a community of God's people, led by the Holy Spirit, is called to be about. Pastor Rena and I have been among you, serving God in these five congregations, for about four months now. Looking at this time we have been working together for the sake of the gospel we been trying to learn the lay of the parish. We are indeed grateful for the prayer support and the ways in which you have been helping us get to know you. Some of the things we have already learned about this parish is that these five congregations (Swede Home, St. Lucas, Augustana, Bergen and Yellow Medicine) have a presence in some way in eleven communities (Montevideo, Granite Falls, Hanley Falls, Wood Lake, Hazel Run, Clarkfield, Dawson, Boyd, Mineota, Cottonwood, Marshall, which may change at any time), situated in four counties (Yellow Medicine, Chippewa, Lac Qui Parle, and Lyon), and part of two conferences (Prairie and Lac Qui Parle); all within the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA. This is the big picture of what you as the Healing Waters Parish have been growing into looks like. The challenge from the outset has been and continues to be, how to be five congregations that work together as one; blending your assets, skills and dependable strengths to mature as the people of God and not be just five separate entities pooling resources to maintain the way things had always been done. What this implies is that changes will present themselves which we may not always see the benefit of, but which become necessary to embrace. Our intention as your pastoral team is to help the Healing Waters Parish continue becoming the community God calls us to be both as congregations and as a parish. As we already have crossed the threshold into 2015 the verse printed above is our wish for you as we proceed together in ministry. In Christ's service, Pastors David and Rena Peterson “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.” 3 John 2 Page 3 ~ February 2015 Healing Waters Parish News Augustana Lutheran Church 921 11th Avenue Clarkfield, MN 56223 320-669-4645 February work group leaders: Dick & Elaine Peterson Rachel circle: Will meet at Karen Kaatz’s home on February 18 at 7:30 p.m. Council members will be contacted with date for next council meeting. 2015 Officers: President: Todd Johnson V President: Marlene Berg Secretary: Vicky Willander Treasurer: Deb Hubbard Augustana Church News WORSHIP SCHEDULE Sunday, February 1 9:00 a.m. Sunday, February 8 9:00 a.m. Sunday, February 15 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 18 5:30 p.m. Sunday, February 22 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 25 5:30 p.m. Lent service schedule - service time 5:30 PM February 18 Ash Wednesday February 25 - Augustana - supper following service March 4 - Swede Home March 11 - Augustana - supper following service March 18 - Swede Home March 25 - Augustana - supper following service If you have information you would like to have in newsletter, please contact Nancy Chasteen at 320-669-7427 or [email protected] Bergen Church News Bergen Lutheran Church 4603 310th Ave. Granite Falls, MN 56241 320-369-7092 Opening the church: .
