Many folks opt to leave Jackson Hole for warmer climates during winter months...just as many, if not
more, stay put using different strategies for enjoying the cold. The coping mechanisms used by seniors to not only survive but thrive from November to May are as diverse as the seniors themselves.
For Sylvia Raumaker "soaking up the sun" is essential. She says she tries to take advantage of
sunshine whenever it comes out. She also goes to the Rec Center for swimming in the winter,
"summer is just too crowded with tourists, and winter is perfect." Sylvia tries to get out of town as
well, heading for the sunshine of tropical locations. This thriving senior says one of the most important things that people overlook is socializing. You will find Sylvia volunteering and socializing
at the Senior Center several days a week.
Greg Lewarchik told us the key to surviving and thriving in a Jackson Hole Winter is staying busy.
Greg is also a volunteer at the Senior Center, where he is starting a workout program using exercise equipment located in the Center's activity room.
One couple said they tried Wintering in a warmer location, and it just didn't agree with them. They
returned to Jackson, and are enjoying their 50th winter here. This couple socializes at the Senior
Center for lunch daily, read everything from newspapers to James Rollins' novels, and volunteer all
over town, including the hospital, museum, and the library.
Chris Englund said surviving and thriving the winter here includes using his Honda 1132 snowblower. It is 32 inches across, 11 horsepower, and is a huge help in clearing sidewalks and driveways. Chris also touts the use of "Stabilizers", similar to "Yak Traks", but with cleats that can be
replaced. This active senior, who turned 60 recently, "discovered" the Senior Center while delivering 120 pounds of food, on his bike, as a volunteer for "Hole Food Rescue". When he found out he
could enjoy weekday lunches for a suggested donation of only $4, "Wham!" he said, "Count me in! I
was getting sick of my own grilled cheese sandwiches."
Marge Ryan, in her beautiful snowman themed outfit, said the key to getting through the winter in
Jackson was to "Stay Busy!" Marge said she volunteers (you may see her behind the desk in the
dining room, taking reservations and checking people in for meals), plays cards with friends, and
participates in lots of activities with her family and her church. Marge says "You need to keep busy,
and not sit around and brood!"
One gentleman, who asked to not be named, said he is currently in his 4th winter of "Sleeping in
my car." He said he wouldn't assume this would be an ideal situation for everyone, but for him it
works...
Karen Swaim, admits there are challenges to not just surviving, but thriving during the cold winter
months in Jackson. She says socializing and staying busy are key. Dashing out of Leslie's Fitness
Class one morning, Karen said exercise like yoga or Leslie's classes, playing Mahjong with the
gang every week, and now taking painting classes...all activities offered by the Senior Center, help
keep her engaged, and chase away the "Winter Blues". She is also a regular at lunches and special
events, and also credits her two cats for keeping her happy and content no matter what the weather
is doing. Karen also volunteers on the "Menu Committee" with Sue Hall and Karen Priebe.
The general sentiment among folks who frequent the Senior Center of Jackson Hole, seems to
echo themes of "Staying Healthy" meaning check-ups, flu shots, washing hands, staying in shape,
(some again cited taking advantage of the varied fitness classes and exercise equipment at the
Senior Center) and good eating habits, (enjoying delicious lunches and other special meals served
up at the Senior Center); "Staying Busy" with volunteering, socializing, and family; and "Positive
Outlook or Attitude" which means, making lemonade when life hands you lemons.
It's not just winter that gives us challenges, as Life can throw things at you any time of year, but
special care is necessary when the mercury in the thermometer drops,
and the snow just keeps falling and falling.

and country two-step. Geared for
beginners, no partner necessary.
Drop-in anytime. First 30 minutes

clients with visual impairments by building capacity of the agencies
and individuals who support them through research-based best
practices
Meet Brook Phillips, a consultant from Vision Outreach Services,
who will be available to answer any questions that you may have
about eligibility criteria and services available through this
wonderful program.

physicians and therapists, providing you with information about
managing your health care and improve issues like diabetes,
blood pressure, and heart health. Each session includes a
speaker, Q&A, blood pressure check, and fitness program. You
do not need to be present each week. Brochures available with
