RIP: Curtis O’Hara ATTACKS ON GOD Saudi Arabia deports Christians for celebrating Assumption September 26: Saudi Arabia has deported 27 Catholics, all Lebanese Maronites, who were arrested for celebrating the feast of the Assumption in a private home. Saudi religious police raided the home in Al Khafij where the celebration was taking place, and charged those involved with "un-Islamic prayer." The raid and the deportations appear to violate a Saudi policy, announced in 2006, that Christians would be allowed to practice their own faiths in private. THE TRANSITUS OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI The Franciscans of Primitive Observance invite you to attend The Transitus of Saint Francis of Assisi on Monday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 34 Common Street in Lawrence, MA. The Brothers will begin chanting at 6:30 p.m. to help create a prayerful atmosphere for the celebration. The Transitus is a bi-lingual liturgical celebration (not a Mass) commemorating the passing of our Seraphic Father, Saint Francis, from death to eternal life. Following the celebration there will be a simple pot luck reception. Please consider bringing your favorite dish, snack, dessert, or drink. HELP AND HOPE: A 12 STEP RECOVERY PROGRAM FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS Are you worried about another person’s drinking? Is someone you know struggling with drug addiction? Don’t know what to do or where to turn for help? Join us for HELP AND HOPE: A 12 Step Program of Recovery for family and friends of those who suffer from addiction. Learn how to live in the solution, not the problem! The meeting is held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Mary’s Religious Education Building (30 Pond Street, Waltham) – first floor in the meeting room at the end of the hallway on the left. All are welcome! ON THE BULLETIN COVER This Sunday’s cover of Saint Francis of Assisi comes from the Benedictine Monastery of Subiaco in Italy. Francis visited the Benedictines and posed for this portrait that a monk painted on the wall in the monastery. It is believed to be the only image we have that shows what the saint looked like. St. Francis’ feast day is October 4. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. From the Prayer of St. Francis Vigésimo Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 2 de Octubre 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, Last week, St. Mary’s was visited by two Bishops from Guatemala. Bishop Antonio Calderon Cruz of Jutiapa and Bishop Angel Recinos Lemus of the Diocese of Escipulas. A majority of Guatemalans in St. Mary’s come from this part of the country. The two men were recently ordained Bishops. Bishop Antonio’s diocese was just established by Pope Francis in January of this year. They passed through Boston on their way home from Rome where they had taken part in a training course for new Bishops. For the past few years, parishioners of St. Mary’s have been raising money periodically to help build a Shrine in Jutiapa. The Bishops wanted to stop by and acknowledge the good work being done by the Guatemalans in Waltham. Let us give thanks that they are bringing honor to our parish. Let us also give thanks that there are parts of the world where new dioceses and new churches are being created. The Church is being blessed throughout the world and we need to remember this when we know and hear of it suffering in other parts of the world including our own. – Father Michael PARISH FAIR THANK YOU A big thank you to all of the people who worked for the parish fair last Sunday. The fair gave people the opportunity to see how they can join in various parish works. It was especially nice to see people spend some time together after the Masses. Special thanks to Dunkin Donuts on Lexington Street for donating hot coffee and to Lavallee’s Bakery for sending over croissants . We are also grateful the Knights of Columbus for setting up and breaking down the tables for the event. PLEASE DONATE FOOD FOR THOSE IN NEED Members and volunteers from Saint Mary's St. Vincent de Paul Society provide assistance to individuals and families within our local community. During the past few months your donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items has allowed the St. Vincent de Paul members and volunteers to provide recipients with a bag of these items to supplement the food vouchers, which we also provide. Thank you… … Please continue your generosity each week! We would appreciate donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items, especially canned goods (no soup, please), to help those in need. Current needs include canned meats, pasta, cereal, and peanut butter. You may leave your donations in the baskets at the back of the church. Many thanks. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink… (Mt 25:35) BOOKMARKS BY TINA FOR HAITI Please take a bookmark from the back of the church in appreciation for supporting the people of Haiti. Since 2010, we have collected $59.426.05 and provided $55,202.07 in assistance to Haiti to help rebuild their church. Thank you for your great generosity towards this work of mercy. We will continue this effort to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti build their church. MASS INTENTIONS Please find the full Mass Schedule on page 6.
