You enter this church… not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. He is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips into His presence, offering Him your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it with their prayers and praise. Ask His blessing on those who love His house of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both on your going out and your coming in. RIP: Patricia Connors, Louise Tower, Jane DePass, Esther Grieci ATTACKS ON GOD Terror attack survivor describes murder of Father Hamel September 30, 2016: A French man who survived the terrorist attack on the church of St. Etienne du Rouvray has described the killing of Father Jacques Hamel. Guy Coponet, a layman who was attending Mass on the day of the attack said that he had been forced by the Islamic terrorists to hold a video camera, recording the murder, so that they might post the video on the internet. "I had to film my friend Father Jacques' murder!" said Coponet. "I can't get over it." Father Hamel resisted the attack, but Coponet said that he was convinced the priest did not condemn his killers. On the contrary, he said, Father Hamel appeared clearly to believe that his assailants were in the grip of some demonic power. As he fell, he said: "Begone, Satan!" Coponet himself was stabbed in the neck by the terrorists after Father Hamel died, and barely survived. The church of St. Etienne du Rouvray, which has been closed since the crime, will reopen on Sunday. ON THE BULLETIN COVER Cleansing of the ten lepers c. 1035-1040, Codex Aureus Epternacensis From today’s Gospel (Luke17:12-14): As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 9 de Octubre 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, The After School Program began its fifth year last month and we have had a great start. It has been a real joy to see them around the parish every afternoon – playing, studying reading and praying. We have a lot of new faces and a lot of new talent. It has also been great to welcome back the adult volunteers who tutor and watch over the children during the homework hour. Last Spring we made a connection with the students who attend the Catholic Mass celebrated for the Bentley students every Sunday night. A good number of the university students are taking time out of their schedules to come over and help the children. A lot of beautiful things are happening with the children. This past Monday, there was no school in Waltham because of Rosh Hashanah. This allowed twenty two of the children in the program to come over in the morning for a field trip. They went over to Gore Place where they saw the house and animals and had a scavenger hunt. They returned to the church in the late morning to attend Mass and have lunch. The Mass was the First Monday of the month Mass for the sick, so the children got to join us in praying for the sick and watching the sick be anointed. We try to take the children on field trips to places in our area so they can learn about their history and heritage. Many of the children have parents who come from different countries, so it is important for them to learn also that America is their country and their heritage as well as their parent’s country of origin. Many thanks to all who are making it possible for the children to come to the parish every day and more importantly for bringing them to Jesus. – Fr. Michael FINANCIAL REPORT – NEXT WEEK Next week, we will provide the financial report for fiscal year 2016 in the bulletin. The weekend after that will be our SemiAnnual Appeal. Please consider making a donation, whatever you can and whatever is possible, so that we can cover our winter expenses and allow us to meet our financial goals: pay all our bills; invest in the maintenance of our physical plant and give to charity. PLEASE DONATE FOOD FOR THOSE IN NEED Members and volunteers from Saint Mary's St. Vincent de Paul Society provide assistance to individuals and families within our local community. During the past few months your donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items has allowed the St. Vincent de Paul members and volunteers to provide recipients with a bag of these items to supplement the food vouchers, which we also provide. Thank you… … Please continue your generosity each week! We would appreciate donations of NON-PERISHABLE food items, especially canned goods (no soup, please), to help those in need. Current needs include canned meats, pasta, cereal, and peanut butter. You may leave your donations in the baskets at the back of the church. Many thanks. VINCENT DE PAUL In today’s Gospel we hear that only one of those healed returned to glorify God and to give thanks to God. It is true, that when we have a grateful heart we know that everything is a gift from God. To give thanks for all that God has given to you, have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Thanks be to You, Lord Jesus Christ, for all that you have given me. Thanks be to You, Lord Jesus Christ, for all that you have taken away from me. Battista CATHOLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES FOR UGANDA Catholic Health Initiatives for Uganda (CHIU) is a non-profit organization based at St. Mary Parish which strives to improve and maintain health care through rural Catholic health centers and hospitals in Uganda. CHIU improves water systems, solar power systems; we empower medical staffs and communities through education; and we provide medical & spiritual support during the medical mission trips to Uganda. This year CHIU is please to announce their advancement to a new health center in Buyoga, Uganda – St Jean Muzeeyi Health Center III. CHIU’s SOLAR POWER PROJECTS: Two years ago at Mitala Maria Health Center, a midwife woke up Dr. Dhaval at 3:00 a.m. to deliver a baby. Dr. Dhaval, a medical doctor from Lahey Hospital, was on a medical mission trip. In the middle of delivering the baby, there was a blackout. Panic engulfed the room. Usually lighting a kerosene lantern or a candle helps, but there was no time. Dr. Dahval quietly pulled out his iPhone 4S, put on the flashlight, and delivered the healthy baby! Jesus survived this in Bethlehem with the stars helping out with the lighting from the universe. (Matthew 2:9) Power outages are common in Uganda. Hospitals strive to install solar power, but it’s very unaffordable. A solar project for one health center costs $4,000, and most of these health centers are self-funded, sometimes by the church. Please attend CHIU’s fundraising dinner (see below) to support St. Jean Muzeeyi Health Center’s maternity ward solar project. FUNDRAISING DINNER FOR CHIU Please join us at our annual Fundraising dinner on Saturday, October 22 at St. Mary’s Lower Hall at 6:00 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser will help CHIU to advance its projects in rural Uganda. Tickets are on sale for $ 50.00 each at St. Mary’s rectory. Please call 781-891-1730 to reserve your ticket! Don’t miss the Ugandan cuisine and lots of entertainments that day. 4 MASS INTENTIONS Masses intentions scheduled this week are listed below. Please find the full Mass Schedule on page 6. This experience was only the beginning of our journey as we work to deepen our relationship with Saint Francis and our Lord Jesus Christ through the Corporal Works of Mercy. All youth are welcome to join! ST. MARY’S GREGORIAN CHANT SCHOLA We are continuing our custom of singing chant at the 8 a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of each month. The schola welcomes new members to carry on this beautiful and prayerful musical tradition. The only requirement is the ability to match a pitch. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Religious Education building.
