“Stewardship”
The Collection Habit of $1.00 or $2.00 or $5.00 a Week?
What is a dollar worth? Whenever anyone takes a survey of giving levels we find a surprising
number of people, with a giving habit of $1.00 or $2.00 a week, or maybe $5.00 or $10.00. And it may
be the same amount over several years. Family total income may go up, but the offering may stay the
same. Of course, if we lose our positions, it is expected to go down, or even stop.
Looking carefully at actual facts of what some basic things cost now, and what they used to cost,
we then can see that the value of the dollar has decreased so much that a few dollar a week to support
the church begins to fade into insignificance. A gallon of Gas, average $3.15; a can of Coke in a vending
machine .75¢; what is under a dollar today? And our church operations, regardless of how great a job
our Pastor is doing in holding costs down, go up.
What many people do not seem to figure is that many incomes have been increased
also. (If you are unemployed, or in hard times, that’s a different story. We pray you will
have better times coming soon.) Contributions from the Widow’s Mite to what ever
you give to God each week, “is the sacrifice that counts.” We give to God through our
Church, our Tithe, in the form of personal sacrificial offerings, for a real Stewardship of
our financial offerings each week. We have many marvelous Church members, individuals and families
that tithe and give sacrificially every week to the Lord. They understand ACCOUNTABILITY. We all are
asked to be accountable to our God. He gives us all the good things we have, everything.

La Colecta Habitual de $1.00 o $2.00 o $5.00?
¿Cuánto vale un dólar? Siempre que alguien hace una encuesta sobre el nivel de donación,
encontramos un sorprendente número de personas con el habito de donar $1.00 o $2.00 a la semana,
o quizás $5.00 o $10.00. Y puede ser la misma cantidad año tras año. El ingreso total de la Familia
puede aumentar, pero la donación sigue siendo la misma. Por supuesto, si pierde el empleo, se espera
que la donación baje, o se suspenda.
Analizando cuidadosamente lo que cuestan algunos artículos básicos, y lo que costaban, podemos
ver que el valor del dólar a decrecido considerablemente y que unos pocos dólares a la semana para
apoyar a la iglesia pasan a ser insignificantes. Un galón de gasolina cuesta un promedio de $3.15;
una lata de refresco de una maquina cuesta .75¢; ¿es qué hay algo que cueste menos de un dólar? El
mantenimiento de nuestra iglesia, no importa los esfuerzos del Párroco de controlar los gastos, van para
arriba.
Lo que muchas personas no parecen entender es que los ingresos también han aumentado. (Si
usted está desempleado, o pasando momentos difíciles, es otra cosa. Oremos para que vengan tiempos
mejores.) Contribuciones como la de la Viuda de la Biblia; poco o mucho que usted de a Dios cada
semana, “es el sacrificio lo que cuenta.” Damos nuestro Diezmo a Dios a través de nuestra Iglesia; como
una ofrenda personal con sacrificio, es el verdadero Stewardship de nuestra ofrenda económica cada
semana. En nuestra Iglesia tenemos maravillosos miembros, individuales y familias que diezman con
sacrificio cada semana para el Señor. Ellos comprenden lo que es ser RESPONSABLES. Se nos pide a
todos que seamos responsables ante Dios. El nos ha dado todas las cosas buenas que tenemos, todas.

Midnight Musings / Pensamientos de Media Noche
Journeys, Part 3
Jornadas, Tercera parte
We regularly speak of ourselves on this
trip to Italy as pilgrims, not just tourists.
Tourists sightsee, enjoy the beauty of
places and buildings, and remember the
history of persons and events. Pilgrims
really enter into the story and personalities
of characters of history in order to make
places and events part of their lives.
Pilgrims grapple with the mystery of good and evil; they
personally wrestle with the story of the saints and sinners in
past history, sometimes hundreds of years ago, sometimes
thousands. Pilgrims let the places and events of the past
speak to us, about us, and who we are in the wondrous story
of God’s working in our world.
We visited Pisa, Florence and Siena, traditionally rival
cities, in the past in bloody warfare but today in almost equally
serious soccer. These cities changed the culture of our world.
Michelangelo and Galileo are both buried in the church of
Santa Croce in Florence.
On October 1 we celebrated the feast of the Little Flower, St.
Therese of Lisieux, at the tomb of St. Catherine of Siena, two
women who deliberately led simple lives, yet who impacted the
lives of others. St. Catherine of Siena in the fourteenth century
lived a life of prayer, penance and care for the poor and the
sick, yet a king and a pope would seek her counsel. The Little
Flower remained cloistered throughout her life, yet her writings
about the “little way” of love have influenced people around
the world for decades.
Our Sunday Mass at the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi
reminded us of the power of faith. Once Francis had his
encounter with the living Christ, his life changed. That is the
goal of the “new evangelization” for all of us, to meet Jesus in
a fresh and transforming way.
Monday, October 3 we said Mass in the catacombs, a place
made holy by the faith, love, perseverance and suffering of the
Christians of Rome. We felt humbled walking in the footsteps
of the heroic saints and martyrs, yet we rejoice that the same
Eucharist that gave them strength still transforms us. We
walked where they walked; we prayed where they prayed; can
we live as they did in faithfulness to Christ?
Tuesday we had Mass at St. Mary Major and Wednesday at St.
Peter’s. We visited the Vatican and its museums. We attended
the weekly audience with Pope Francis. This visit shows us
the splendor of the Church today, such beautiful architecture
and art, and an amazing history of grace triumphing over evil.
Some could say that we have had many good popes and also
bad popes, but the faithful Catholic sees that despite the human
element, Jesus has been faithful. Even all of us with all our
sins cannot destroy the Church; Jesus is our sure foundation.
Pope Francis’ ministry in the Church has already transformed
how we look at ourselves and others. His humility mirrors the
holiness of the past, as in the Vrgin Mary, the Apostles Peter
and Paul, St. Francis, St. Clare, St. Catherine of Siena, and so
many others. Will we ourselves take up the challenge of Jesus
to live a his Body in the world today?
Usualmente nos consideramos peregrinos en éste
viaje a Italia, no sólo turistas. Los turistas van de un lado
a otro viendo lugares bonitos, disfrutando del paisaje, la
arquitectura, y recordando la historia de personas y eventos. El
peregrino penetra en la historia y en la personalidad de estos
personajes históricos haciendo posible que sean parte de su
vida. Los turistas se aferran al misterio de lo bueno y lo malo;
personalmente luchan con la historia de santos y pecadores del
pasado, algunos de cientos de años, otros miles. Los peregrinos
dejan que los lugares y eventos del pasado nos hablen, sobre
nosotros, y quiénes somos en la sorprendente labor de Dios en
nuestro mundo.
Hemos visitado Pisa, Florencia y Siena, tradicionalmente
ciudades rivales, en el pasado con luchas sangrientas pero hoy
en cosa tan serias como futbol. Estas cuidades cambiáron la
cultura del mundo. Miguel Angel y Galileo están enterrados en
la cripta de la iglesia de Santa Croce en Florencia.
El primero de octubre celebramos la fiesta de la
Pequeña Flor, Santa Teresa de Lisieux, en la tumba de Santa
Catalina de Siena, dos mujeres que deliberadamente viviéron
vida simples, aún así impactaron la vida de otras personas.
Santa Catalina de Siena en el siglo 14, vivió una vida de oración,
penitencia, y cuidado de los enfermos y los más pobres, reyes
y papas solicitaban sus consejos. La Pequeña Flor vivió su vida
enclaustrada, y así escribía sobre el “pequeño camino” que el
amor tiene para influenciar a la gente del mundo por decadas.
Nuestra Misa dominical fue en la tumba de San
Francisco de Assisi, recordándono el poder de la fe. Una vez que
Francisco tuvo su encuentro con el Cristo vivo, su vida cambió.
Esa es la meta de la “nueva evangelización” para todos nosotros,
conocer a Jesús en una forma fresca y transformadora.
El lunes 3 de octubre celebramos la Misa en la
catacumbas, un lugar hecho santo por la fe, el amor, la
perseverancia y el sufrimiento de los Cristianos de Roma. Nos
sentimos humildes caminando sobre los pasos de heróicos
santos y mártires, al tiempo que nos regocijamos que la
misma Eucaristía que les dio fuerzas, todavía nos transforma.
Caminamos por donde ellos caminaron; oramos donde ellos
oraban; ¿podremos vivir como ellos vivieron en su lealtad a
Cristo?
El marts tuvimos Misa en Santa Maria la Mayor y el
miércoles en San Pedro. Visitamos el Vaticano y sus museos.
Asistimos a la audiencia semanal del Papa Francisco. Esta
visita nos enseñó el esplendor de la Iglesia de hoy, una belleza
de arquitectura y de arte, una fabulosa historia de la gracia
triunfando sobre el mal. Algunos pueden decir que tuvimos
muchos papas buenos y también malos, pero el Católico fiel
ve que apesar del elemento humano, Jesús ha sido fiel. Igual
que todos nosotros con nuestros pecados no podemos destruir
la Iglesia; Jesús es nuestra base sólida. El ministerio del Papa
Francisco ya ha transformado la Iglesia en cómo nos vemos a
nosotros mismos y a los demás. Su humildad es un reflejo de
la santidad del pasado, como en la Virgen Maria, los Apóstoles
Pedro y Pablo, Santa Clara, Santa Catalina de Siena y muchos
