Midnight Musings / Pensamientos de Media Noche An Age of Martyrs La Era de los Mártires We often talk about the first three centuries of Christianity as “The Age of Martyrs.” Certainly many did give their lives, starting with Jesus himself. Stephen, the first martyr after Jesus, gave his life in Jerusalem. We remember the stories of apostles bearing witness to Christ by shedding their blood, like Thomas in India and Peter and Paul in Rome. As the Church began, Christians endured opposition from both Jews as well as the Roman empire. In the 60’s Nero cruelly punished Christians and scapegoated them for the burning of Rome. The first 33 popes, or bishops of Rome, died as martyrs. The empire regarded Christians as subversive to the state; they would not worship the gods of the empire and were regarded as atheists. In a sense Christians shared persecution with other political and socially unwanted groups. Persecutions were very often sporadic and local, although in some periods, such as AD 257-58 under Valerian and 303-5, Diocletian’s rule, Roman administrators singled out Christians for persecution. The 2nd-century Church Father Tertullian wrote that “the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church,” meaning that the heroism of martyrs furthered the spread of the gospel. Finally in the fourth century AD Constantine made the Church free. Yet persecution of Christians in the twentieth and twentyfirst centuries has reached unexpected heights. The twentieth century witnessed Christian suffering in the Communist USSR, China, Cuba and North Korea, as well as under Nazi Germany, among other places. Most recently the respected Pew Research Center calls Christians the most persecuted people in the world, suffering in 110 countries. Some estimate that 8,000 die as martyrs each year; that would be almost one person each hour of every day. The Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary maintains that an average of 100,000 Christians have been killed for the faith each year for the past 10 years. The word “martyr” means “witness.” Some bear witness even to death. Others experience limitations to their religious freedom. Some endure harassment by government forces or by societal prejudices. Yet all of us feel the challenge of the gospel to remain faithful to Jesus in all aspects of life. We bear “witness” to Christ by what we say and do in the great and small moments of life. All of us “martyrs” must “witness” to Jesus by our whole being. We pray that we remain faithful. We pray especially for those in different parts of the world who pay the ultimate price for loyalty to Jesus. Suyos en Cristo, Yours in Christ,
