CHURCH ROOF REPAIR: WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT Our Parish Must Now Pay the Bill for the Roof Repair The roof of our Church with the exception of the Divine Mercy Chapel has been fixed at the cost of $89,600. If you would like to make a contribution to help pay for the roof repair here is how you can do it: If paying by check please put church roof repair in memo and place in an envelope with roof repair on the outside. If paying by cash please put in an envelope and put your name and roof repair on the outside of the envelope. You can drop the envelope in the collection basket, give it to one of the Priests or you can bring it to the rectory. God Bless our Parishioners for all their generous support. As of July 18 our generous parishioners have donated $2,085 towards the roof bill. God Bless you for your generosity and we ask if you have not contributed to the roof can you please consider making a donation. Any amount can help. Summer Stewardship For everyone Summer is a great time to take a step back and reflect on our spirituality, try to breathe the warm air, contemplate a starry sky or a sunrise over the ocean and feel God's presence among us. We encourage you to use those coming months to deepen your relationship with God. Particularly, we remind you that Mass attendance remains the backbone of your spiritual life. For those of you lucky enough to escape at the weekend to shore houses or remote resorts, Summer means you will not be joining us at St Vincent de Paul every week but you can find local Mass times online at masstimes.org. Importantly, even if you are away, you remain responsible for the stewardship of our parish simply because parish bills do not take a vacation. There are three ways you can accomplish this: enroll into our electronic donations system so your offering will continue to be processed in your absence — go to churchgiving.com/ StVincentdePaulBayonne07002 Send your envelope with your donation. Note that you should not send cash, but checks can be sent to the parish; "Make up" for missed collections by giving your offering before you leave or after you are back. Supporting your parish is an important responsibility and we count on you to maintain the sustainability of our parish. In the long run, it is our ability to pay our bill that ensures the parish will continue to exist. Thank you in advance for your generosity! OUR PARISH NUESTRA PARROQUIA From Desde El Escritorio Fr Peter: Del Padre Peter: The disciples come to Jesus with a request: “Lord, teach us to pray.” This reminds me of a story about the pastor of a parish that was experiencing financial difficulties. He kept praying that he could win the jackpot in the lottery so that all the debts could be paid. Each week he would turn to the Lord with the same plea: “Lord, help me win the lottery.” He became discouraged and so he asked God why his prayers were not being answered. Suddenly the clouds were opened and the pastor heard a voice from heaven saying: “BUY A TICKET!” Now I don’t think that simply buying a lottery ticket is the answer to all of our financial woes, but it does show us something very important. We cannot expect that God will solve all of our problems regardless of our actions. The great Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Basic economic classes teach us about how we need to match supply with demand and also to find a balance between income and expenses. As a parish, we have two very simple options to balance a budget, increase revenue and decrease expenses. This is the same battle that we all face in our own family. Jesus taught the disciples how to pray and he also showed them how to act. St. Benedict wrote to all of his monks that their life must be a balance of prayer and work (ora et labora.) May we always remember the old saying that we should always “pray as if everything depends on God but work as if everything depends on us.” The parish currently has openings for Altar Bread, Wine, Sanctuary Lamp and votive candles. We also have weekday Mass and Saturday 6.30 PM Masses without specific intentions yet which can be offered this year. Finally, our 2017 Mass Book is open. La parroquia actualmente tiene disponibilidad para donaciones del Pan, Vino, la lámpara del santuario y velas votivas. También tenemos misa de día de la semana sin intenciones específicas todavía que pueden ser ofrecidos este año. Por último, nuestra libro de misa del 2017 está abierto. No Summer Break for the Food Pantry Even though it is Summer our Food Pantry does not slow down. We are distributing food every other Thursday. We service 20 Street to City Line. At our last distribution we had 85 Families. Anyway you can help us is greatly appreciated either by food or monetary donation. We are also asking for gently used clothes. God Bless you for your generosity, and in particular, God Bless Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Carey for their generous donation of $1,000 to the Food Pantry in Memory of George T. Paczkowski and in Honor of Antoinette M. Paczkowski. This money will be used to restock our pantry shelves. A MESSAGE FROM THE RESPECT FOR LIFE OFFICE OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK Please Support A3452/S2026, the NJ Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act There is substantial medical evidence that babies in the womb feel pain at a very early stage of gestation. Thanks to advances in medicine, babies as young as 20 weeks post-fertilization can survive and thrive with appropriate care and treatment. Experts in the field of Maternal-Fetal medicine routinely administer pain medication as standard medical practice when performing fetal surgery because they recognize these babies as patients. The NJ Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (A3452/ S2026) will protect babies in the womb at 20 weeks and older who are capable of feeling pain and ensure that babies born alive during an abortion will be given the same proper lifesaving medical care given to premature infants. We are happy to report that A3452/S2026, the NJ Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has been introduced in the NJ Legislature. We thank the sponsors of this bill for wanting to protect babies in the womb and the lives of women. This bill is modeled after H.R. 36, the Federal bill by the same name. Passing this legislation is part of the 2020 Project, a collaborative effort by pro-life groups in NJ to protect babies in the womb who are capable of feeling pain at 20 weeks gestation. Take Action Now! Pray for the protection of babies in the womb and their families. Contact your NJ State Senator and Assembly Members and ask them to support A3452/ S2026, the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. To find your NJ State Senator and two State Representtive by district/town, visit: njleg.state.nj.us/districts/ municipalities.asp Did you know? The U.S. is one of just seven countries that allow elective abortions after 20 weeks. The six remaining countries that allow abortions past 20 weeks are China, North Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Canada and the Netherlands. Why does everyone go down on one knee before sitting down when they first come in? When we enter the Church, after remembering who we are in Baptism, we remember what brings us there—the Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. There is a receptacle in the Church that should be in a very prominent place and is probably made of at least a semi-precious metal. It’s called the Tabernacle. It’s where we keep Eucharist that was consecrated (changed from bread into the True Presence of Christ) at a previous Mass. We keep it there for emergencies and to bring to the homebound, nursing homebound and hospitals. Since we believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, we go down on one knee in the direction of the Tabernacle—a gesture called “genuflecting.” Harkening back to the very olden days, we genuflect as an acknowledgment that our King—Jesus—is there. Our response to His presence is what it would always be in the presence of a king—to go down on one knee out of respect, honor and homage. Why do Catholic Churches always have a cross with Jesus’ body on it? 14 states have enacted limits since 2010 on the unborn child's ability to feel pain. For more information on this initiative or to obtain a car magnet or sticker, please visit www.babiesinthewombfeelpain. com Holy Family Academy Class of 1976 to hold 40th reunion Holy Family Academy Class of 1976 will be holding its 40th reunion on October 29, 2016, at The Breakers, Spring Lake, NJ, 5-9 pm. Tickets are $80; RSVP by August 15. For information, email Mary Ellen Koscs-Fleming at [email protected]. The Committee is looking for the following classmates: MaryJane Brennan, Maria Isabel Contreras, Marianne DeRosa, Donna Dyletczuk, Linda Forts, Sandra Grabosky, Marie Mascher, Maureen Matlosz, Lisa McCarthy, Helen Murphy, Judy Reidy, Kathy Reidy and Kathleen Roerty. Q uestions for Catholics We call the Cross with Jesus’ body (a corpus) on it a Crucifix. For Catholics, our appreciation of the Cross is not just the Cross itself, but what Jesus did for us on the Cross. Yes, Jesus is resurrected—he’s not still dead on the cross—but it’s important for us to enter into the experience of the crucifixion. It wasn’t sterile—and it can’t be sterile in our memory. Jesus; 100% God, 100% human, really suffered and really died on the Cross. We believe that it is this action (paired with the resurrection) that offers us salvation. We also believe that because of Jesus’ suffering, our suffering has meaning, too. When we look at the crucifix, we are reminded that God knows our suffering. We are also reminded that, just as Jesus wasn’t alone in His suffering, we aren’t either. And, finally, just as Jesus’ suffering wasn’t the end of the story; neither is ours. God never lets suffering go unchallenged; and the crucifix is our banner for God’s ultimate conquering of sin and death through His own suffering. HUDACKO’S PHARMACY BAYONNE SMILE CENTER DAVID G.
