National Catholic Schools Week
Come after me...
Catholic Schools: Communities of
Faith, Knowledge and Service
January 25-31st
The calling of the
brothers in today’s
Gospel evokes
Elisha’s commissioning by the prophet
Elijah (see 1 Kings
19:19-21).
As Elijah comes upon Elisha working on his
family’s farm, so Jesus sees the brothers working by the seaside. And as Elisha left his mother
and father to follow Elijah, so the brothers leave
their father to come after Jesus.
Jesus’ promise - to make them “fishers of men” evokes Israel’s deepest hopes. The prophet
Jeremiah announced a new exodus in which
God would send “many fishermen” to restore the
Israelites from exile, as once He brought them
out of slavery in Egypt (see Jeremiah 16:14-16).
By Jesus’ cross and resurrection, this new exodus has begun (see Luke 9:31). And the apostles
are the first of a new people of God, the Church a new family, based not on blood ties, but on
belief in Jesus and a desire to do the Father’s
will (see John 1:12-13; Matthew 12:46-50).
From now on, even our most important worldly
concerns - family relations, occupations, and
possessions - must be judged in light of the
Gospel, Paul says in today’s Epistle.
The first word of Jesus’ Gospel - repent - means
we must totally change our way of thinking and
living, turning from evil, doing all for the love of
God.
And we should be consoled by Nineveh’s repentance in today’s First Reading. Even the wicked
Nineveh could repent at Jonah’s preaching. And
in Jesus we have a greater than Jonah (see
Matthew 12:41). We have God come as our
savior, to show sinners the way, as we sing in
today’s Psalm. This should give us hope - that
loved ones who remain far from God will find
compassion if they turn to Him.
But we, too, must
continue along the path
of repentance - striving
daily to pattern our lives
after His.
—Scott Hahn, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
Catholic Schools Week celebrates
education that goes beyond preparation for a secular life ─ it is education
that prepares students for a Christian
life. CSW also celebrates the high standards of excellence
and the quality of the education available to all students in
Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the U.S.
We are blessed to have St. Didacus
School as a vital part of our parish life.
Our principal, Mrs. Tollefson and all
the teachers and staff are committed to
empowering students to be spiritually,
academically and socially prepared to
live today and tomorrow, both morally
and effectively.
St. Didacus School will kick off this
annual celebration week at the 10am Mass on Sunday,
January 25th. The school will hold an Open House after
Mass from 11am-2pm. Everyone is welcome to come and
visit the school!
St. Didacus School will celebrate the week with a special
theme each day. The
week concludes with
Grandparents’ Day on
Friday, January 30th.
Through these events we
focus on the value
Catholic education
provides to young people
and its contributions to our church,
our communities and our nation.
The purpose of Catholic Schools
Week is to build community
awareness of, and involvement in,
Catholic schools throughout the
country. During this week, many
dioceses and schools encourage
parents to take full advantage of the benefits of local
Catholic schools by enrolling their children in those
schools. Registration for prospective new students
(Preschool to Grade 8) for the 2015-2016 school year at
St. Didacus officially opens on Sunday, January
25th. For more information on registering your children,
please contact the school office.

Jesus continues to attract followers to join in the awesome work
of God. Today he calls simple fishermen to leave their nets and to
come follow him. How is God calling you today? Does he call you
away from your computer, the TV, your pursuit of money and
material things, your selfishness? What must you leave behind in
order to become Jesus’ disciple?

MARY OF NAZARETH
Friday, February 6th
6pm in the Parish Hall
Mary of Nazareth is an
epic motion picture on the
life of Mary, mother of
Christ, from her childhood
through the Resurrection
of Jesus. Shot in High Definition, it was filmed in
Europe with outstanding cinematography, a
strong cast, and a majestic music score. Actress
Alissa Jung gives a beautiful, compelling and
inspired portrayal of Mary.
After viewing this movie, Pope Benedict XVI
said: “ Mary of Nazareth is the woman of a full
and total ‘Here I am’ to the Divine Will. In her
‘yes’, even when faced with the loss of her Son,
we find complete and profound beatitude.”
The film runs 150 minutes, so we strongly recommend that you bring a nice comfy chair with you!
Come right at 6pm for a quick hotdog dinner and
we’ll start the movie at 6:30pm. Bring a movie
snack to share! RSVP to the Parish Office if you
can join us!
2014 Tax Statements are available by
request only. To request your tax statement,
please call the Parish Office. Thank you for your
generosity throughout the year!

Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul
January 25th
The ninth chapter of Acts of the Apostles tells
the story of Paul’s conversion to Christ. This story is so
important that Luke includes it two other times in the
Acts of the Apostles, and Paul tells the story in his own
words in the first chapter of his Letter to the Galatians.
Before he became known as Paul, his name
was Saul. He was a tentmaker from the city of Tarsus.
Saul had studied to become a teacher. When Stephen,
the first Christian martyr, was killed, it is believed that
Saul held the coats of those who threw the stones.
Saul set out for
Damascus. He wanted to
arrest any Christians who
had escaped from Jerusalem
after Stephen’s death. Along
the way, Saul was struck
down to the ground and
blinded. He heard the voice
of Jesus. Jesus asked him,
“Saul, Saul, why are you
persecuting me?”
Saul was in shock.
He allowed himself to be led
to the home of Christians in
Damascus. A holy man named Ananias prayed with
him and his sight was restored. Saul went to an isolated spot to reflect on his new faith. Then he returned
to Damascus and began preaching the Gospel.
Everyone was astounded at the change in him.
Now Saul was the one being persecuted. His friends
feared for his life. They helped him to escape from
Damascus by lowering him over the wall of the city in a
basket.
Saul, who began to call himself by the Roman
name of Paul, went out on missionary journeys. He
crossed the Roman empire four times to bring the good
news of Christ to the world.
—A Guide to the Saints and Mysteries of the Christian Calendar
“May God grant you, in accord with the riches
of God’s glory, to be strengthened with power
through God’s Spirit in your inner self. May
Christ dwell in your hearts through faith; so
that you, rooted and grounded in love, may
have strength to comprehend with all the holy
ones what is the breadth and length and height
and depth, and to know the love of Christ that
surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled
with all the fullness of God. Amen.

iglesia.
