hey’re staying on the lines.
More than 36,000 Verizon employees
have hung up and joined the picket lines,
opting to go on strike on April 13 after
unions for field service workers failed to
reach an agreement with the company
after a 10 months of negotiations between
them and corporate telecommunications
company led to a stalemate.

The strike is the biggest in the United States
since 43,000 Verizon workers walked off the
job in 2011, which lasted two weeks.
Mostly service technicians for the
company’s landline and FiOS operations,
the striking employees are not connected to
Verizon’s Wireless division.
However, union members are being
dispatched to picket outside Verizon Wireless
stores as a strategic move, as the division is
the most profitable business unit of Verizon,
explained Elaine Maddox, Chief Steward
for the Communication Workers of America
(CWA) union Local 1105.
“That’s where [Verizon Chief Executive
Officer] Lowell McAdam says all the money
is coming from, so by targeting the stores we
can get more attention,” Maddox said.
McAdam, who makes an $18 million
annual salary, has said that Verizon’s landline
business now accounts for less than 30
percent of the company’s total revenue, and
changes are needed for the company to stay
competitive.
Workers, who have been without a contract
since August 2015, say that that Verizon is
asking them to shoulder more health care costs
and wants to send more technicians on the
road, away from their home area, for weeks or
months at a time.
The strike is being led primarily by CWA
and electrical workers’ union International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
“No one wants to go on strike,” said IBEW
Field technician Paul Williams on the picket line.

de que los sindicatos de los trabajadores de
servicio de campo no pudieron llegar a un

La huelga es la más grande en los Estados
Unidos desde que 43,000 trabajadores de

the country,” said Stephens, who is based in
Manhattan. “It will keep us away from our
families.”
Maddox said that there is currently a rule
that prevents the company from sending
technicians more than 35 miles from home.
“The company is looking to get rid of that
rule,” she said.
Verizon has said it wants the flexibility of
maneuvering technicians in order to be more
efficient.

Elizabeth Yeampierre, the Executive
Director of social justice non-profit UPROSE,
was one of several panelists speaking on
a new report issued by the New York City
Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA).
In addition to UPROSE, the city-wide
alliance is comprised of a host of organizations
that seek greater equity in environmental
justice and reform, including The Point CDC
in the South Bronx and the Morningside
Heights-West Harlem Sanitation Coalition in
Northern Manhattan.
Convened earlier this month, the
discussion centered around the group’s
response to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s OneNYC
Plan, a proposed blueprint for environmental
sustainability and resiliency.
The Mayor’s office has called it “the plan
for a strong and just city.”
EJA’s report, titled The NYC Climate
Justice Agenda, outlines specific steps in
which the plan can be improved to offer more

The suggestions released on April 4th
stress community-based solutions focused on
climate adaptation, equity and infrastructure,
public health, and community preparedness.
“OneNYC introduces important new themes
not addressed in previous sustainability
plans,” states the report. “But the result of this
increase in scope is a diminished level of detail
when compared with previous sustainability
blueprints. Though the spirit of the goals may
be in the right place, without a clear path for
implementation, the initiatives often do not
transcend from lofty goals to concrete plans.”
Organizers said the observations made
are as constructive criticism and a call for
inclusion from those who know first-hand the
neighborhoods affected.
“Some communities are especially
vulnerable to climate change, and we applaud
de Blasio for recognizing these things,”
explained EJA’s Executive Director Eddie
Bautista. “We wanted to know, what has the
response to OneNYC been from grassroots
organizations?”
The report argues that climate change and
extreme weather events can disproportionately
negatively affect low-income communities of
color. It points to six industrial waterfront
communities of color in particular—the South
Bronx, Sunset Park, Red Hook, Newtown
Creek, Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the North
Shore of Staten Island—as especially
vulnerable to climate change and toxic
exposures, and which require more protection
from the mayor’s plan.
“We know that the South Bronx has some
of the poorest air quality and highest rates of
asthma in the city,” said Bautista. “Air quality
is at its worst on especially hot days. If ninetydegree days double or triple in the future

NAN marks 25 years
at annual convention

T
he Reverend is still revved up.
Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action
Network (NAN) marked its 25th anniversary
at its national convention, which took place
at the Sheraton Times Square last week.
More than 6,000 attendees poured into the
four-day event, held from April 13 to 16,
which featured more than 100 guest speakers
discussing gun violence, politics, women’s
rights, immigration, job growth and other
topics.
In addition to the quarter century
milestone, many eyes were trained on this
year’s convention due to appearances by
presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and
Bernie Sanders, who addressed black voters
in advance of the New York primary on April
19.
The inaugural session on the morning
of Wed., Apr. 13th, which featured an
official ribbon-cutting ceremony, brought
together a roster of speakers which included,
among others, U.S. Secretary of Labor
Thomas Pérez, U.S. Secretary of Housing
and Urban Development Julian Castro,

remarks that the organization was still a

Sharpton said he founded NAN in 1991 to
further a civil rights agenda in the vein of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Based in Harlem, the
organization now has more than 70 chapters
nationwide.
He added that the United States is in a new
era where progressive politics and civil rights
have dovetailed, evident in the elections of
President Barack Obama and Mayor Bill
de Blasio. Sharpton has maintained close
relationships with both men.
That the conference’s silver anniversary
fell during an election year further raised the
gathering’s profile.
Presidential candidates have long used the
NAN conference as a platform to engage
black voters — the 2007 meeting featured

hese show stoppers were
trafficking in safety.
Nearly 400 second graders recently trained
their eyes on the performers who sang and
danced at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s
Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital.
The young audience members’ enthusiasm
was contagious as they swayed in their seats
to the music and called out the lyrics in
response.
“You need your brain, eyes, ears, hands,
before you use your feet,” they sang out.
Beyond being entertained, the children were
learning life-saving skills – as set to song.
The elementary school students
participated in the interactive sessions.
The Traffic Theater Safety Show, sponsored
by the city’s Department of Transportation
(DOT), is presented 10 times a year, and late
last month, the performers made their way
uptown to NYP to put on a show before local
first and second graders.
The performance is designed to inspire
children to make safe choices as they make
their way about on city streets and is part
of Vision Zero, the citywide effort to limit
pedestrian fatalities in New York City.
Jonathan Luks, Director of Flying Ship
Productions, has led the organization for the
past two decades. He explained that the group
produces original musical theatre to young
audiences in an accessible and educational
format.
“Our goal is to meet the kids on their level
and help them understand the
importance of staying safe on
the streets,” remarked Luks on
March 31st. “We also want to
make it truly fun for them.”
To that end, the performers
offered contemporary pop
songs and dances, which led the
children through educational
traffic-themed vignettes.

recientemente entrenaron sus ojos ante
artistas que cantaron y bailaron en el Hospital
Infantil Morgan Stanley del Hospital NewYorkPresbyterian. El entusiasmo y las risas de los
jóvenes espectadores se contagiaban mientras
se balanceaban en sus asientos al ritmo de la
música y gritaban en respuesta. “Necesitas tu

al NYP, para montar un espectáculo ante
estudiantes locales de primer y segundo grado.
El espectáculo está diseñado para inspirar a

de Vision Zero, el esfuerzo de toda la ciudad

More than 80 Jewish, Catholic and Muslim
middle school students joined together at
the Manhattan headquarters of the AntiDefamation League (ADL) to experience a
traditional Passover Seder on Tues., Apr. 19th.

“It was great to meet people
in this setting and make
new friends,” said Maliha.
Students were able to share stories about
their own holiday traditions and ask questions
about each other’s religions.
Participating schools were Abraham Joshua
Heschel High School, Solomon Schechter
School of Manhattan, Epiphany School and
Islamic Cultural Center School.
Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL’s Chief
Executive Officer, suggested to students
that the current U.S. political climate and
acts of world terrorism made it important
to form bonds with those of different
backgrounds.
“If we can become friends, we can
become strong enough to stand up for our
friends,” said Greenblatt. “We’re all in this

el martes 19 de abril.
Los estudiantes pudieron compartir historias
sobre sus propias tradiciones festivas y hacer

Las escuelas participantes fueron la
Preparatoria Abraham Joshua Heschel, la
Escuela Salomón Schechter de Manhattan,
la Escuela de la Epifanía y la Escuela Centro
Cultural Islámico.
Jonathan Greenblatt, director general de

Social Work recently hosted
award-winning visual artist
Andrea Arroyo at the school’s
“Arts Intervention in Social Work
Practice” class.
The artist and curator shared her
presentation “Tribute to the Disappeared”
with the social work students and facilitated
a class discussion on art for social change on
Mon., Apr. 18th.
“Tribute” is an art project Arroyo founded
in 2014 in honor of the disappeared in
Mexico that aims to bring public attention to
the disappeared.
Students said it had proven a moving
experience.
“Arroyo allowed us to experience a deeper
insight into the lives of parents of 43 students
that had gone missing in Mexico,” said
student Eman Said. “The most compelling
aspect of the presentation was the photos of
the parents of the missing students. The face
of a father showed agony and confusion. I
appreciate the narrative of the families of
these students that went missing and giving
them a voice.”
The class is taught by Associate Professor
Annecy Báez, who seeks to incorporate
visual art, journaling and creative writing into
her clinical social work with children, teens
and adults.
“Art stirs our emotions – from anger, to
fear, to grief,” said Báez. “It brings awareness
to issues we may be unaware of, and it
humanizes them. Art [can help] expose and
resolve many of the social justice issues we
encounter.”

registered recycling rates higher than the city
average.
“True recycling success requires more
than bins,” insisted Levine. “It requires real
coordination and education in partnership with
resident leaders. We urge the administration
and NYCHA to fully engage with resident
leaders to ensure successful recycling
programs across NYCHA.”
The panelists said they would continue to
foster dialogue on environmental issues and
sustainability with members of their respective

there for 30 years.
Now it’s official – Eboné M. Carrington
has been named Chief Executive Officer
(CEO) for NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem.
At 37, she will begin her tenure as the
hospital’s youngest-ever CEO, managing a
$200 million budget and 2,400 employees.
Carrington had been serving as Acting CEO
for the last month while carrying her duties as
the hospitals’ Chief Operating Officer (COO),
a position she’s held since September 2013.
The hospital’s dentistry department is
named after her father, an oral surgeon.
As a family, they have shared over 80 years
of service to the Harlem community.
Things have come full circle.

Considered the most commonly celebrated
Jewish ritual, the Seder is typically observed
by a members of a community or a family who
gather together at the beginning of Passover.
The occasion marks the story of the liberation
of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.
Among the customs observed are the telling
of and discussion the story of liberation;
drinking four cups of wine; eating matzah; and
reclining in celebration of freedom.
Though the ADL has conducted the interfaith
Seder for the past several years, said Evan
Bernstein, the agency’s Executive Director, this
year the organization changed things up a bit.
“This is the first time we’ve had students
representing three different faiths,” Bernstein
said. “It’s a great opportunity for them to
learn about each other and see they’re not so
different.”
Bernstein commented that anti-immigrant
rhetoric by some presidential candidates
made the interfaith Seder and the message of
tolerance a timely one.
“Hatred is a learned behavior,” he remarked.
“These kinds of events can change the course
of how people can think about each other.”
Sara Aharon, Assistant Regional Director
at ADL, told students they would each receive
a copy of the book A Nation of Immigrants,
written by John F. Kennedy as part of ADL’s
One Nation Library series.
Students also broke into groups to work
on posters representing different parts of the
traditional Seder.
“It was great to meet people in this setting
and make new friends,” remarked Maliha, a
student at Islamic Cultural Center School.
“I learned that there’s a lot of overlapping
between our religions,” added Itamar, a sixth
grader at Solomon Schechter School. “We
have a lot more in common than I realized.”

DiNapoli referenced the importance of this
year’s election to global relations.
“The world is going to be looking at what
happens in the United States this year,” he
said. “It’s important that the agenda of NAN
be reflected.”
De Blasio credited the activism of Sharpton
and NAN constituents with helping to alter
the city’s “broken stop-and-frisk policy,” and
noted that crime has gone down since, along
with complaints against police officers.
“This is the way of the future,” said de
Blasio. “It is being proven here in the biggest
city in the country, but it would not have
happened if NAN hadn’t stood up and said it
was time for a change.”
Sharpton discussed NAN’s involvement
with civil rights causes, including support to
families who were victims of police brutality.
He pointed out the mothers of Eric Garner,
Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell,
Ramarley Graham and Amadou Diallo, all of
whom were in the audience.
“We don’t leave when the cameras leave,”
Sharpton stated. “We’ll stay there until the
end.”
Labor Secretary Pérez thanked Sharpton
for causing “good trouble” with his activism.
“It brings about change,” he remarked.
Pérez, who is the nation’s first cabinet
member of Dominican-American descent,
added that the United States has made
“undeniable progress” since Obama took
office.
“He inherited the worst economy in
history,” Pérez said, yet the country has
had 73 straight months of private sector job
growth.

Clinton and Sanders give their remarks.
“I haven’t made up my mind between
them,” he commented. “But they’re hitting
on a lot of issues important to the black
community.”
Attendee Jackie Mackey, who has attended
five consecutive NAN conferences, said she
looked forward to the event every year.
“It’s always been informative,” Mackey
said. “We’re able to learn about lots of
political and women’s issues and how we can
raise ourselves in the world.”

That some of the lesson plan involved
dynamic movement clearly made a lasting
impression.
As one young student beamed, “I loved
the dancing, [especially] when they NayNay’ed.”
