December 20, 2015 4th Sunday of Advent 1883-2015 A Time of Hope Fourth Sunday of Advent Almighty, eternal, just and merciful God, give us the grace to do for You alone what we know you want us to do and always to desire what pleases You. Inwardly cleansed, interiorly enlightened and inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit, may we be able to follow in the footsteps of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and by Your grace alone, may we make our way to You, Most High, Who live and rule in perfect Trinity and simple Unity, and are glorified God almighty, forever and ever. There’s a lot of joy and rejoicing going on in the Gospel of Luke. The angel’s announcement of the coming birth of John the Baptist to his father Zechariah included the words: “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.” Perhaps it was the same angel who later made another stop to tell some shepherds about the birth of Jesus and said to them: “I proclaim to you good news of great joy.” When Mary greeted Elizabeth, the unborn John the Baptist “leaped for joy,” and on the same occasion Mary sang, “My spirit rejoices in God my savior.” A dictionary would tell you that joy can be feelings of well-being, happiness, delight, success, good fortune, and pleasure. In scripture joy comes from knowing salvation is on the way. As a person of faith, what are you joyful about? WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE, & WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH. ST. JOSEPH’S PAGE TWO FROM THE PASTOR My Dear Brothers and Sisters, In the beginning of my letter to you today, I would like to share with you some reflections from a priest colleague, Father Larry Janowski: “We work so hard at Christmas. We spend time and money to make it beautiful, enjoyable, tasty and memorable, so it’s easy to think of it as something we do rather than something God does for us. Today’s main characters, both Mary and Elizabeth, are acutely aware of their ordinariness, their own “lowliness” as two women who know that the miracle happening in them is because of the favor and grace of God. This should take our breath away and stop us in our oh-so-busy pre-Christmas tracks. Jesuit poet Richard Stanley gets it right imagining Mary and Elizabeth at the Visitation: Elizabeth! Elizabeth, I ran all the way, / you may not believe me. . . I feel as big / as all outdoors. I will somehow feed / the hungry and the sore; that there is balm enough in me / for every pain; or anyone who’s bent with shame, my eyes alone might make straight again. Saint Francis of Assisi says we’re all “pregnant” with Christ as “mothers of Christ when we carry him in our heart and in our body by divine love and with a pure and sincere conscience. We give birth to him through holy works which should shine forth as an example for others.” My friends, as we make ready to celebrate Christmas at the end of this week, please know how much you are loved and appreciated by me and my brother priests and deacons, and all who serve this wonderful community of faith, we lovingly call Saint Joe’s. I pray your Christmas brings you peace and joy and all good things. God bless you all. Fr. Fr.
