In 80% of cases in Oregon, there is no health care provider present at the time of death. Families do not have to be notified. Physicians who prescribe the means to suicide abandon the Hippocratic Oath to “Do No Harm” in favor of money. They do not even have to know the patient nor are they required to help with pain alleviation, or refer the person for counseling for depression. Most patients do not choose suicide to avoid pain. It is an impulsive “solution” which emanates from a fear of loss of control of their ability to function and fear of being a burden to others. Palliative care medicine assists the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of the patient. The Catholic Church does not require persons to bear undue suffering or prolong the life with the use of extraordinary measures. With the assistance of physicians who value human life, patients can be helped to live without pain and to have time to complete their life with real dignity.
