We welcome all guests and visitors to our regional parishes, and may you have a wonderful time with the event that you are participating in. Some of you are here for the celebration of the Vietnamese Youth Convention (In Christ Alone!) at The Pacific Lutherans’ University. This event is very special for the Vietnamese Youth Group throughout the United States of America who gathers once every three years to pray and to celebrate the spirit of youth. At this gathering they will remember the formal Cardinal Francis Nguyen van Thuan, who started this event (youth gathering) before he died. We thank all the guests and visitors for stopping by to visit our parishes. We thank you for joining us to celebrate the Independence Day weekend and may the Lord continue to bless upon you and your family! It is a joyful weekend and we thank God for the blessing upon our country and our family. We thank you for remembering your parish and Faith Community while you are away for your vacation. We have a wonderful online giving program and you are very faithful with your stewardship to share your blessing with your parish. Summer is a wonderful time for being with the family, as we are able to have the time to celebrate our life and family events. We have the parish grounds that need us to water it during the dry season (summer), so all the plants and flowers can remain green and alive. We thank all the volunteers for keeping our parishes’ ground green. It is hard for only a few people and this makes it difficult for them to fulfill their tasks. If you are around for the summer, please come to assist us with what you can do to keep all the plants alive and flowers blooming. I met with the parish team for our transition of the Priests at Sacred Heart’s Church. Father KoKol and Father McDermott met at the Priest’s Day. I also had the opportunity to meet with both of them and I am working with the parish leadership to have a date to thank Father Juan Carlos for taking his time to care for us and to welcome Father McDermott for his willingness. We will keep you informed on what I know so we can prepare on what we need to do at this time of transition. I thank you for enrolling your children into the summer school at St. Ann’s Church. The children will learn how to appreciate their parents, how to take care of themselves, how to enjoy time with their friends in study, in playing the games together and in praying together to support the ministry of the parish. We thank you for your support of the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). We are asking you to participate in the campaign, so if you have not filled in a commitment card or returned it in to the parish office, please do so. It is important to assist this campaign, because we will receive the rebate for our parish’s special project. We are very happy to have both parishes of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and St. John of the Woods’ Church reach their goal. We are still praying for our Sister Parish of Sacred Heart’s Church to also reach her goal, so it will be a successful ACA campaign (each parish obtaining its goal). We had a wonderful time with a big group of the Eucharistic Youth Group from the Vietnamese Catholic Community. They spent time to know each other, support each other to learn the Bible, and how to be a good leader through practice. They have a good leader who has a strong formation in the Church’s teaching, Bible study, and discipline areas of life. It was wonderful for me to witness them by observing them to practice their leadership in leading each other at the summer camp. I met with the committee for the Parish Picnic both at St. Ann and St. John of the Woods’ Church. There is information for the parish picnic and you are cordially invited to come. Father Laga is on vacation and he will be back on July 20 th. He has not visited his family for several years, so it is a good time for him to go and visit them. We thank you for your support of his ministry. I thank the outreach ministers who continue to assist us to bring Communion to the homebound. Father Laga is away for a vacation, so Fr. Kokol and I will fill in to celebrate the Nursing Home Mass. I thank the homebound ministers who assist me when I am visiting in the nursing home that you are serving. We ask those parishioners who are concerned about the project of planting the new trees in the field (that we had harvested a few years ago) to come to a meeting. We planted the first round and a few survived and we are planning to plant again (the second time). Before, we do this, we would like to invite someone who has some knowledge on logging and planting the new trees to meet with us. So, we invite Joe to give us his information and insights. Please assist us by coming to this meeting, so we can make the right decision on what is best for our parish. I love this prayer when I heard it from Bishop Michael Barber, who shared it with us at Priest’s Day (he found it from a newspaper and had cut it out and kept it in his pocket for many years and uses it as it reminds him of the priest) so I like to share it with you. “The Priest … no matter where he is located, the diocesan priest has to be the sharer of secrets, the carrier of burdens, the fountain of consolation, and the pillar of strength, Solitary, he called father by thousands; poor, he enriches the lives of thousands; weak, he gives strength thousands; unimportant he does things each day whose importance cannot be told in any tongue on earth. He is never too busy to hear another’s sorrows; often too busy to realize his own burdens. He is a 24-hour-a-day man. He is called from his dinner; wakened from his sleep; disturbed at his prayers. He is at the beck and call of any of his people. He is the target of God’s enemies, the magnet of God’s needy. Occasionally, he attracts attention; but usually he works unnoticed and unacclaimed while he does the noblest work on earth ---keeps Christ in the lives of the people.” During this period of transition, please keep the Priests in your prayers. I thank you for your support and prayers. May the Lord continue to bless upon you and your family! Sincerely Yours in Christ, Our website: www.trparishes.org Fr. Tuan Nguyen, D. ANN: 8:30am - 7:00pm Thursdays 5pm - 7pm Tuesdays Divine Mercy & Mass (Samoan Comm.) 7:00pm Fridays Mass (Vietnamese Language) by Barbara & Clarence Leingang Ember Days are special days set aside by the Church to focus on God through His marvelous creations. They have their beginning in the early Church and were in conjunction with the natural seasons. History tells us that the origin of Ember days goes back to pagan Rome and the observance of agricultural practices. The early Church had always tried to sanctify “heathen practices” into the life of the Church if they could be utilized for a good purpose. The name came from the Latin Quator Empora and refers to the start of a new season (four times a year). The time frame for the three days (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday) of the seasonal week is: Winter after the feast of St. Lucy; Spring: after Ash Wednesday; Summer: after Pentecost; Fall: after the Feast of the Holy Cross. The specific days were representative as such: Wednesday the day Jesus was betrayed, Friday the day He died, and Saturday the day He was entombed. The Ember days were special penitential days of partial abstinence (meat at the principal meal) and of fast (one main meal and two smaller ones). Within the Church, these days continue to be observed on the liturgical calendar by those using the Indult to follow the Tridentine liturgical regulations. They do not occupy fixed days on the calendar of the current Roman Rite. The General Instruction does provide for the establishment of such days by episcopal conferences. More specifically, Pope Paul VI, in 1966, did exclude Ember Days in his Apostolic Constitution (Paenitemni). In 1969, the liturgical reforms altered how Ember Days would be observed in Parishes. Read Eccl. 3:1-8 “Á time to be born……etc.” for a Biblical reference to the origin behind the Ember Days. Reference: EWTN, Acquinas website, Catholic Encyclopedia ST. Priests would like to say thank you to those who have been making meals for them every Thursday. The number of priests are four. They would appreciate your care and generosity. If you are interested, please call Sr. Theresa (253) 592-2541. Meals could be brought around 3:30-4pm to the St. Ann’s Rectory. The sacraments make Christ present in our midst. Like the other sacraments, marriage is not just for the good of individuals, or the couple, but for the community as a whole. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage between two baptized persons is a sacrament. The Old Testament prophets saw the marriage of a man and woman as a symbol of the covenant relationship between God and his people. The permanent and exclusive union between husband and wife mirrors the mutual commitment between God and his people. The Letter to the Ephesians says that this union is a symbol of the rela- Support Your Parish With Online Donations St. Ann’s Adult ESL Program Supper for our Priests Make online Donations with a credit card or debit card. Patriotic Rosary & Mass Thursday, July 2, 2015 6:00PM St. Ann Church 7025 So Park Ave. Tacoma, Wa. 98408 Respect Life Regarding the June 26th Supreme Court Ruling on Marriage "Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable. Just as Roe v. Wade did not settle the question of abortion over forty years ago, Obergefell v. Hodges does not settle the question of marriage today. Neither decision is rooted in the truth, and as a result, both will eventually fail. Today the Court is wrong again. It is profoundly immoral and unjust for the government to declare that two people of the same sex can constitute a mariage." ~Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz; President of the USCCB http://usccb.org/news/ The Patriotic Rosary is prayed for every state in our country and for all of our legislative offices. It takes approximately 50 min and will be followed by Mass. Military and Veterans are encouraged to wear uniforms. All are invited. Tuan Nguyen D.
