The Most Body and Blood of Christ
THANKSGIVING
The word “thanksgiving” most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the second
century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper as “food we call ‘thanksgiving’ ” (in Greek
eucharistia). The Thanksgiving we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort of proud societal self‑congratulation and
the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The “thanksgiving” that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we
are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things
by giving praise to God alone.
While the food of Christ’s body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We
are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord’s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanksgiving
for the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out
against the self‑righteous. In short, the hunger created by our doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living in remembrance of him. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
“acción de gracias” que en griego se llama “Eucaristía” es al revés: lo que nos lleva a ella es el reconocimiento de nuestras faltas;
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Death and our Catholic Faith
God has given us the gift of our lives and the promise of the fullness of life to come. As Catholics, we face
the mystery of death with faith, knowing Jesus has taken suffering and death upon himself, and was raised
to glory.
The Bishops of California, joining with a wide variety of other leaders in health care and with advocates
for the disabled, are opposing Senate Bill 128 that will provide for physician assisted suicide. What is this
bill all about? Why should you care about it? What are the arguments pro and con?
Parishioners from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Clare and Saint Kateri are invited to a thoughtful
discussion about the experience of suffering of human beings as they approach the end of their lives and
how we can help them. This discussion will be lead by Doctor Glen Komatsu, Chief Medical Officer for
Hospice and Palliative Card of the Providence Little Company of Mary Health Care System.
Doctor Komatsu brings extensive experience in palliative medicine (which focuses on relief from suffering).
His presentation will take place on Thursday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m. in Slattery Hall of
Saint Kateri Tekawitha Parish, 22508 Copper Hill Drive, Santa Clarita.
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21st
(Dad’s need prayer too!)
Father’s Day Spiritual Bouquet cards are available in the vestibules of the church.
Show Dad how much you care by preparing a gift of prayer.
Anointing of the Sick

Today, and the first Sunday of every
month after the 12:45pm Mass, one of our
priests will celebrate the Sacrament of the
anointing of the sick. If you or someone
you know is expecting to have surgery, has been ill or is
elderly, please take advantage of this opportunity.

Registration for 2015-2016 classes is NOW OPEN!
Enrollment Period Ends on July 24th
The Office of Religious Education offers classes for children in preschool-8th grade.
The Sacramental Program is two years and prepares students for receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and
Holy Eucharist. Students who have completed the sacraments are encouraged to continue in their faith formation.
The upper grades instruct children in scripture readings, sacred Catholic traditions and doctrine. Junior High classes
focus on morality in today’s society, Catholic Social Justice and scripture readings. Additionally, junior high students
participate in community service projects.
Knowledge and understanding of one’s faith is key to living a fulfilling spiritual life.
New Families: You need to bring your child/children original baptismal certificate and be registered at St. Clare’s Parish for priority enrollment.
Returning Families: Make sure your family’s account is up-to-date in order to process the registration. Extra registration packets are available in the office.
Join the Ministry of Religious Education!
We are looking for a few good people who are looking to step out of their comfort zone (in a church pew) and
step in front of a classroom of eager children. Children teach us as much as we teach them. Share the Good
News with an open audience which is ready to explore their prayer life, learn about Jesus through scripture
readings and be creative in expressing their love for God and family.
Becoming a catechist requires: An appointment with D.R.E., Nancy Medina, call 661.252.6950 or email
[email protected] / Enroll in a Virtus Safeguard the Children class this summer / Fingerprinting / Availability to attend special classes and/or trainings during the year / Open-mind & heart so the Holy
Spirit can teach the children through you / Desire to get involved at a deeper level in our community of faith /
Like children & possess a good sense of humor!
