The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
FAMILY LIFE
VIDA FAMILIAR
Family life is sacred, but it is not without trial.
Perhaps this is the most important message we can
glean from today’s readings. If Jesus, Mary, and
Joseph can trip up sometimes—can disconnect—
then we shouldn’t find it surprising when such
things happen to us as well. And parents everywhere (children, too) can probably relate to—and
take some solace in—the Gospel’s account of Mary and Joseph after Jesus explained why
he stayed behind in the temple.
They heard his words, Luke
tells us, “But they did not unAl tercer
derstand what he said to
dia lo
them” (Luke 2:50). Amen!

back home with them, and conen el

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

God Created the World for Everyone
Representatives from nearly 200 nations recently met in Paris and reached an
unprecedented agreement that every nation on Earth is committed to a common
cause in the fight against climate change. Our Catholic Social Teaching emphasizes
that “We must show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of
creation.” Pope Francis is an outspoken leader in this commitment and challenges us
to understand and accept this responsibility.
St. Clare’s Social Justice Ministry is sponsoring a “book study” on Pope Francis’ Encyclical about this
commitment. The five sessions will meet every other Monday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 in Room 7, beginning
Jan. 25. Participants will need to purchase an inexpensive copy of the encyclical. Registration is necessary to
prepare for adequate seating. People of all faiths are invited. TELL YOUR FRIENDS.
Contact Kathy Brown at [email protected] or 661-644-6086 NO LATER THAN Jan. 15.

Gospel Reading for The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph
Luke 2: 41-52
Gospel Reflection: Where do WE look for Jesus? How do we look for Jesus? Joseph and
Mary express that they had been anxiously looking for Jesus when they find him. Are we
anxiously looking for Jesus? When they find him, they find Jesus in the temple. Do we
come to church expecting to find Jesus? This is a wonderful Gospel to use with you children. Ask them
where in the church they see Jesus. Explain to them the need to arrive anxiously ready to see Jesus at Mass.
Joseph and Mary found Jesus where he know to be present; in His Father’s house. We, too, can come and be
with Jesus. Another wonderful opportunity to make Jesus present to your children, bring them to Eucharistic
Adoration in the chapel. Our Lord is waiting for us to find Him.

THE BLESSINGS OF OUR COMMUNITY
IN THIS YEAR OF MERCY
The following is an excerpt from a homily given by Pope Francis in his proclamation of this being the “year of
mercy”.
“Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. It is
journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary Jubilee that is to have the
mercy of God at its center. It shall be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live this Year in the light of the Lord's words: “Be merciful,
just as your Father is merciful. (cf. Lk 6:36)”
This community of St. Clare has always responded to the needs of the poor. Once again, our Christmas
basket program was a huge success. We told you we needed food, you brought food a plenty. We wanted to
have gifts for children, you brought gifts for children.
The Detention Ministry team had their annual Christmas party and with that comes their list of needs which
you were able to meet.
Fr. Miguel announced during the Spanish Mass that the orphanage located in Tijuana and run by the Piarist
Fathers was in need of assistance to help their children know that Santa knew where they were. The response
was phenomenal. During the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe - each of the Hispanic Ministries prepared
food and sold it throughout the day. They raised in excess of $3,700.00 in that one day to help the children of
“Hogar Hocati.” (This was after they purchased and wrapped gifts for the children.)
So, as Pope Francis says, “We want to live this year in the light of the Lord’s words: Be merciful, just as your
Father is merciful.”
