In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative. Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. The Museum committee in our on going efforts to teach about the history of our Mission would like to add a replica of an 1800’s caretta to our patio area. We have found a local craftsman who can make it for us but we need to purchase supplies and pay for his labor. During Colonial times the carreta was used to transport goods and people from one Mission to another. It enabled a flourishing trade to develop within California. The carreta will enable visitors and parishioners alike the opportunity to visualize and appreciate the struggle of those pioneers who came to California as priests, soldiers, and settlers. We need your help to raise funds for this historic Mission project. All donations will be greatly and graciously accepted. PAGE 3 R EFLECTION OF THE WEEK December 20, 2015 Fourth Sunday of Advent In the Old Testament reading today the people of Israel are promised a ruler who will stand firm with the strength of God. The prophet Micah, who is a great preacher of social justice, announces that the king who will rule in the line of David will come from the small insignificant place of BethlehemEphratha. This promised ruler will shepherd the people. In the gospel reading today, Mary who is pregnant with Jesus travels to visit Elizabeth, who is also with child. We sense the expectancy of the journey and the excitement of the arrival when Mary greets Elizabeth. The infant in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy when she hears Mary’s greeting. Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and she speaks a profound truth calling Mary blessed and the Mother of the Lord. Today’s gospel reading exposes the awesome mystery of the incarnation, God made flesh in the birth of Jesus. On this fourth Sunday of Advent, the gospel announces the great event of Christ’s coming in the flesh. Reflection question: Adult: When was it hardest for you to trust in God’s plan, as Mary did? What can help you at such times? Child: When is it hardest for you to obey a parent or teacher? What can help you obey with more trust? In their search for meaning and purpose, young people have a great openness to prayer. The teachers, parents, and staff of Old Mission School know that we have the grace-filled privilege and opportunity to weave prayer throughout the daily lives of children. We do this in many ways. Our aim is to awaken and empower students to live lives that are attentive and responsive to God, who is always present to them. We ask that you will continue to pray with us for the continued faith development of our children, so that none will miss the voice of God, which beckons with the dawning of each day. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
