ubilee Year of Mercy
December 20, 2015 • Fourth Sunday of Advent
In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope
Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy
Year be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples
“go out to every man and woman,”
bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers
and those far away, as a sign that the
Kingdom of God is already present in our
midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her
visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully
presents just such an image. Despite the
perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her
preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary
instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far
and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s
tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative.
Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way,
bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such
selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to
others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas
season this Jubilee Year.

A great opportunity has come to our Parish.
The Museum committee in our on going efforts to teach about the
history of our Mission would like to add a replica of an 1800’s caretta
to our patio area. We have found a local craftsman who can make
it for us but we need to purchase supplies and pay for his labor.
During Colonial times the carreta was used to transport goods and
people from one Mission to another. It enabled a flourishing trade
to develop within California. The carreta will enable visitors and
parishioners alike the opportunity to
visualize and appreciate the struggle of
those pioneers who came to California as
priests, soldiers, and settlers.
We need your help to raise funds for this
historic Mission project. All donations
will be greatly and graciously accepted.

It’s time to get affordable health insurance
Covered California Open Enrollment starts now!
As of 2014, most people are required to have health
insurance or, more precisely, “minimum essential
coverage” otherwise they may face a tax penalty.
Many families and individuals are eligible for
sliding-scale financial help that can reduce health
care costs. Don’t miss the opportunity to provide a
healthy future for your family!
Covered California open enrollment will run
from Nov 1st, 2015 to Jan 31st 2016. Certified
Enrollment Counselors for the Covered California Health Care
Program are available through Catholic Charities Diocese of
Monterey. Counselors are able to determine eligibility and assist
with applications. For more information about the program, local
outreach events in your parish, or to schedule an appointment
please call our offices.

Care for Creation
Mary set out unselfishly to give aid and comfort to her
aging relative, Elizabeth. During this Holy season, there
are many people who are alone and may not have family or
friends. If you know of someone, why not give them a call?
See if there is anything you can do for them.

R
EFLECTION OF THE WEEK
December 20, 2015
Fourth Sunday of Advent
In the Old Testament reading today
the people of Israel are promised
a ruler who will stand firm with
the strength of God. The prophet
Micah, who is a great preacher of
social justice, announces that the
king who will rule in the line of
David will come from the small
insignificant place of BethlehemEphratha. This promised ruler will
shepherd the people.
In the gospel reading today, Mary
who is pregnant with Jesus travels
to visit Elizabeth, who is also with
child. We sense the expectancy of
the journey and the excitement
of the arrival when Mary greets
Elizabeth. The infant in Elizabeth’s
womb leaps for joy when she hears
Mary’s greeting. Elizabeth is filled
with the Holy Spirit and she speaks
a profound truth calling Mary
blessed and the Mother of the Lord.
Today’s gospel reading exposes
the awesome mystery of the
incarnation, God made flesh in
the birth of Jesus. On this fourth
Sunday of Advent, the gospel
announces the great event of
Christ’s coming in the flesh.
Reflection question:
Adult: When was it hardest for you
to trust in God’s plan, as Mary did?
What can help you at such times?
Child: When is it hardest for you to
obey a parent or teacher? What can
help you obey with more trust?

Old Mission School
From all those at
Old Mission School
we hope and pray
this season has
been filled with joy!
In their search for meaning and
purpose, young people have a
great openness to prayer. The
teachers, parents, and staff of
Old Mission School know that
we have the grace-filled privilege
and opportunity to weave prayer
throughout the daily lives of
children. We do this in many
ways. Our aim is to awaken and
empower students to live lives
that are attentive and responsive
to God, who is always present
to them. We ask that you will
continue to pray with us for the
continued faith development of
our children, so that none will miss
the voice of God, which beckons
with the dawning of each day.
Old Mission Catholic School is currently
accepting applications for preschool
through eighth grade. For more information
or to obtain an application, please visit our

P. Braulio

A
ño Jubilar de la Misericordia
20 de diciembre de 2015
Cuarto Domingo de Adviento
Al proclamar el Año Jubilar
de la Misericordia, el Papa Francisco
exclamó cómo él deseaba que este Año
Santo esté “lleno de misericordia”,
nosotros como discípulos vamos “al
encuentro de cada persona llevando
la bondad y la ternura de Dios. A
a nuestros prójimos, debe marcar especialmente

Day de Latinoamérica.
