Maintaining this level of service requires considerable
funding in addition to donated food items. Our one, and
only fund raiser for the year is our Birdies for Bread Golf
Tournament. This event is held annually in cooperation
with the Temecula United Methodist Church and this year
will be held on Sept 18 at the Pala Mesa resort in Fallbrook.
Please visit our display in front of the church after Mass
next weekend and learn how you can help. In addition to
golfers we need donated items for our auction and opportunity drawings as well as cash donations.
Additional information can be obtained at www.birdiesforbread.com or by calling Ed Healy at 951-326-0973.
There will be a Consecration to the Immaculate Heart
of Mary Ceremony at all Masses during the weekend
of October 10 & 11, 2015. This will be a brief ceremony and all are invited to make this Consecration of
our Parish and ourselves. Following every Mass will
be a Holy Anointing of the Sick also.

Welcome
Please join us in welcoming Alex Rodarte to the Saint Catherine Catholic community.
Alex is currently a seminarian and will be serving an internship with us for the next several
months. Alex was born in Los Angeles, CA on March 23, 1982 and he and his family moved to
Rialto, CA in 1989. He is a graduate of Rialto High School in 2000 and entered the seminary at
Blessed Junipero Serra House in Grand Terrace in 2007 where he remained for 2 years. From
there, Alex entered St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola University
Chicago where he graduated with a BA degree in philosophy in June 2012.
In the same year, he started his training in theology at St. John’s Seminary
in Camarillo, CA and this summer, completed his first unit of Clinical
Pastoral Education. Alex enjoys reading, watching movies, and listening
to music. Alex joins us as part of our parish family to become more familiar with Parish life and office operations. Please make sure to say “Hello”
to him when you see him.

What does Comprehensive Youth Ministry look like here?
From the USCCB’s document, Renewing the Vision:
“The ministry of prayer and worship with adolescents has several distinct dimensions that provide direction to comprehensive ministry efforts by promoting the authentic participation of youth in liturgy. We do this by incorporating the
world of young people into worship…encouraging those
who preach to use current examples involving youth in
liturgical ministries… allowing music and song to express
the vitality of young
people… provide visual aids to encourage young people's
participation, and explore the appropriate use of multimedia at liturgy…and focusing on the hospitality provided at
liturgy… Through immersion in the symbols, stories, and
rituals of the communal prayer life, our youth gain not only
a knowledge but an appreciation of the power of the
sacraments.
BEGINNING TODAY, SEPTEMBER 13, OUR 6PM LITURGY
WILL FOCUS ON MEETING THE DISTINCT NEEDS OF
OUR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS! INVITE A YOUTH OR

Reflecting on God’s Word
Going to the school of Jesus was not always easy for the disciples.
Beginning with this event, Jesus begins to educate them about what
it means to be his disciple. He starts with the basics: Who he is. Like a
good teacher, he engages them in a discussion, asking two questions,
going from the easier one to the more demanding one: Who do others
say I am? Who do you say I am?
The first question gets a quick answer, but the second one gets only
Peter’s response. By saying “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:29), Peter
was naming Jesus as the long-awaited Anointed One, the one who
would come to restore Israel’s political kingdom and overthrow the
Romans. But this was not to be. Jesus counters Peter by speaking of
himself as the Son of Man who must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and
then rise after three days.
Peter is aghast at this and places himself in front of Jesus so that Jesus
has to tell him to get behind him. Peter is blocking his way, like an
obstacle, a stumbling block, an adversary (Satan), preventing Jesus
from going in the direction he is heading. Peter had learned about
a Messiah of power and prestige and Jesus was talking about a Man
of pain and punishment. Peter wanted a political Messiah, not a
suffering one. Peter saw the disciples taking part in the pomp and
pageantry of a new age, and Jesus was speaking of denying oneself
and picking up a cross.
But graduating from the school of Jesus means moving out of our
comfort zone into a distressful district: a place where we take up the
cross of self-denial and self-sacrifice. Of course, it all depends on how
we answer his question: Who do you say that I am?
—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
