Diocese of San Bernardino
Office of the Bishop
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today, we are reflec ng with great sadness and despair on the tragic loss of life that occurred early Sunday
morning in Orlando, Florida at the hands of a violent a acker. Please pray for the eternal rest of those who lost
their lives in this tragedy and for the consola on and healing of their loved ones and also those injured in the
a ack. We place our pain before God and we unite our suffering with the Lord Jesus who shed his blood for us on
the cross.
For those of us in San Bernardino this is especially painful because we also experienced the trauma of an act of
public violence in our community not so long ago, at the Inland Regional Center. In that sense, we offer our
prayers and our tears in solidarity with the vic ms of this a ack, their loved ones, the Diocese of Orlando and the
City, itself. Because of the circumstances of this a ack, we also make clear our condemna on of discriminatory
violence against those who are gay and lesbian, and we offer our prayers to that community.
We believe in the dignity and worth of every human life and we decry every a ack on that dignity that happens in
acts of hatred and violence. As we discern our response to this a ack as Catholics, let us resolve ourselves to be
an unrelen ng voice for peace and non‐violence in every realm of our society. The evil that is present in these
events demands nothing less from us.
In Christ,
Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
An old and still vital treasure in our tradition is a document
called the “Apostolic Traditions,” giving us a snapshot of
church life in third-century Rome. Its author, Hippolytus,
describes the liturgical life of the church and records the
actual texts of the prayers. The way he explained the various
“orders” of the church was the basis for a major reform of the
rites of ordination by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and later for the
Second Vatican Council. Hippolytus tells us that a bishop
had to be elected by the entire people, and that ordination had
to take place on a Sunday in the presence of the people, the
presbyters, and neighboring bishops. The bishop-candidate is
ordained by the other bishops, who impose their hands on his
head while everyone else keeps a profound silence, awaiting
the outpouring of the Spirit. There is a prayer of blessing said
by one of them, on behalf of all, asking for the Spirit and
describing his ministry.
Later centuries layered new features on top of this
liturgy, including the requirement for three bishop
consecrators. Today, whenever a new bishop is announced
(election by the people is no more), a kind of genealogy is
provided, tracing his pedigree through the consecrating
bishops down through the centuries to Peter and the first
body of believers. Every bishop today can trace his office
through his consecrators back to the beginning in a tradition
called “apostolic succession.”
