YOUTH MINISTRY AND FAMILY EVANGELIZATION September 19-20 Information on Youth, Young Adults, Mission trips, Retreats and Family Catechesis How the Youth Mass is different? We are so excited about our new youth Mass. We have a terrific ling up of young and youth oriented priests coming in who will prepare bold sermons that address the difficulties of living our lives as Catholics in this confusing time. Many of our young people leave because they don't feel that we address what they are confronted with and there is so much confusion about how to deal with pressing issues and how to love people through difficult choices. The youth will act as ushers and greeters and are encouraged to approach young adults and youth to welcome them outside the doors. They will also act as Eucharistic Ministers, and Lectors as well as in the choir. All youth volunteers will be easy to spot in blue shirts with the St Catherine logo. Which brings us to MUSIC! We will start each Mass with a welcome followed by Christian music as an interlude to the Mass. Both the songs and the setting, the prayers we sing together each week, have been chosen to speak to the hearts of the youth and young adults (and young at heart!) The prayers that we sing will include some Latin and less repeating and the music will be faster paced and inviting for all of us to JOIN US sing and all the words will be projected on the screens. Come and experience the change and invite someone CHILD’S who is searching for something different! Reflecting on God’s Word The disciples may have been a bit slow to understand how Jesus was re-defining the Messiah he was going to be, but they were not stupid on all accounts. They picked up on the reaction Peter got when he rebuked Jesus for talking about suffering rejection and death. So, when Jesus brought up the subject for a second time in today’s Gospel, they just listened politely, then dropped back out of earshot and changed the subject to a more pleasant one—themselves, and who was the greatest. Things must have gotten quite animated because when they got home, Jesus asked about it. Their silence surely disappointed him, since he could surmise what had engaged them. But like a good teacher, he tries another way to make his point. There must have been a child nearby, because he calls her over and places his arms protectively around her, and says to them, “If you want to be first, then be last. If you want to be in charge, then serve. When you take in the least, you take in not only me but my Father.” Class dismissed. It has proved a hard lesson to learn. Or maybe few of us really want to learn it. When you look out at the world, most seem to want to be first, the greatest, the one with the most and best toys, a wielder of power and influence and authority. Choosing to serve the least doesn’t make the top ten on most people’s “to do” list. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
