29 NOVEMBER 2015  FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
This first week of Advent we begin to prepare for the birth of Jesus.
This very act of God was an extraordinary gift of mercy on the world. In September
2015, Pope Francis announced, for the whole Church, an Extraordinary Jubilee
of Mercy beginning on December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception and will conclude on Sunday, 20 November 2016, the Solemnity of
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and living face of the Father’s mercy.

a true encounter with the mercy of God: “It is indeed my wish that the Jubilee

be a living experience of the closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is
almost tangible, so that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and thus

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion Sr. Maria Teresa Salceda, Director
Humberto Arreola, Coro Hispano
of the New Evangelization, Vatican City State, 1 September 2015)
Below is a prayer written by Pope Francis specifically for this Year of Mercy. I
am considering having all of us pray it at Mass together during the year. This
prayer along with other information on the Year of Mercy can be found at the
Jubilee of Mercy website (http://www.iubilaeummisericordiae.va/content/gdm/
en.html)
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the
Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of
Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and
ever.
Amen.
With my prayers for a blessed Advent filled with Mercy,
Fr. Patrick

REFLECTION
Movies often portray the end of the world with great
destruction, frantic screams, and terrorized faces. People
die of many things, but today the Gospel says that
people will die, not from what they see, but of fright “in
anticipation of what is coming upon the world” (Luke
21:26). In the past few years, many natural disasters
have occurred and people wondered if the end of the
world was upon us. As disasters occur, it is natural to
pray for those affected and be thankful that you yourself
are okay. Each time something terrible happens, it is
good to pray for others, help if you can, and be aware of
what you have and what you think you need. But are you
stuck? Fearful of losing those you love? Or, are you so
focused on the future that you miss the chance to slow
down to help others?
Our faith offers us a gift that isn’t present in every other
faith tradition. Because of Jesus we believe in life after
death. So, in this life we prepare for the next life. We are
each asked to have the strength to stand before Jesus.
Tribulations all have different faces. You could be
hearing gossip. You could choose to filter it or stop it.
It might be seeing an older student be unfriendly to a
younger student. You could choose to step in and help.
Sometimes our tribulation is choosing to do the right
thing when something more fun is out there. In order to
be “blameless in holiness” (1 Thessalonians 3:13) we
need to look around us and first choose to see. It isn’t
easy, but making the right choice does refine our souls
to be brighter for Christ.
ACTION
Advent begins today, a time of joyful waiting and
preparation to see the Christ child face to face. As new
parents have to baby-proof their house before their child
comes, spend some time looking at your habits and
attitudes. Is your life too Christ-proof that the light of
Christ struggles to seep in? Clear away the unnecessary
roughness so that you can be ready to embrace the
newborn baby in your heart.
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
What things about the future worry you? What, if
anything, can you do about these things?
How do your actions portray your choices to follow Christ?
What more can you do to stand firm and conduct
‘yourself in a manner pleasing to God?

29 NOVEMBER 2015  FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Tu mirada llena de amor liberó a Zaqueo y a Mateo de la esclavitud del a dinero;
a la adúltera y a Magdalena del buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura;
misericordia;
Padre Patricio
PREPARÁNDONOS A
