December 6, 2016 - All Saints Catholic Church

Manassas, Virginia
ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH
This year of 2015-2016, our parish theme is
I know well the plans I have in mind
for you, says the LORD, … plans to
give you a future full of hope.
Jer 29:11
All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent,
and treasure so as to give glory to God.
Advent is the time of the prophets. It is the way in which we
bring into our lives the meaning of the centuries of prophets
who kept alive the promise of the Savior. Advent is that
time when we contemplate the events of Mary and Joseph,
Zechariah and Elizabeth, and John the Baptist, who held
these prophecies of a Messiah deep in their hearts.
This week we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. How fitting that
during the Advent season we reflect upon Mary and her role
in salvation history. Through Mary’s fiat (“Let it be done to
me”) we find that the Savior of the world took on our human
nature and Mary became the Mother of God. The doctrine of
the Immaculate Conception
holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary in the first instance
of her conception was kept entirely free from the stain
of original sin by a singular grace and privilege of
Almighty God, in view of the foreseen merits of Christ
Jesus, the Savior of mankind …
Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is the
patroness of the United States of America. We pray to her so
that we might learn the effects of sin and discover how the
grace of God is more powerful in our lives. Advent is a time
to renew hope that the Messiah will once again come into our
hearts and minds and transform us.

Whenever the Eucharist is celebrated, it embraces the entire
human family, both living and dead. It is not limited to one
person or one intention. The benefits of each Eucharist are
infinite and include the whole world.
Nevertheless, the custom of requesting a priest to offer the
Mass for a specific intention is a longstanding tradition in the
Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as
the greatest possible prayer of intercession insofar as it is the
perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the
Paschal Mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus.
This refers to commending to the Lord a special intention in
addition to the intentions that are included in the celebration
of every Eucharist: the Holy Father, the Diocesan Bishop,
the clergy and “the entire people you have gained for your
own” (Eucharistic Prayer III). Those for whom the Mass is
thus offered participate in a special way in the grace of the
Eucharistic sacrifice.
Masses may be offered for any good purpose, most commonly
for the repose of the soul of someone who has died, but also
for the living, as on anniversaries, birthdays, times of illness,
or in thanksgiving. The faithful generally make an offering,
called a stipend, to the priest in order to apply the Mass to a
specific intention.
The scheduling of Mass intentions at All Saints Parish is done
through the parish office. Please note the following:
Scheduled Masses — If you are a parishioner and would
like to have a Mass offered for someone, please come by the
parish office on Wed.-Thurs, Dec. 9-10, from 10:00–11:45 am
and 1:00–2:30 pm. To expedite matters, you may come by the
parish office and pick up envelopes early and then fill them
out at home; in this way when you come in, you’ll be ready
to go!
There are many requests for the limited number of Masses
offered each year. In view of this fact and the size of our
parish, to ensure some fairness in the procedure, we are
asking that each family limit their Mass Intentions to no more
than six (6) scheduled Masses per year. The customary Mass

Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from
being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness
only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words
that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by
forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord
risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in
weakness
in order that they may feel compassion for those in
ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,
loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its
anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from
the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring
good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of
Mary, Mother of Mercy;
you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit
for ever and ever.
Amen.

This Holy Year will commence on the next Solemnity
of the Immaculate Conception and will conclude on
Sunday, 20 November 2016, the Solemnity of Our Lord
Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and living face of
the Father’s mercy. I entrust the organization of this
Jubilee to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the
New Evangelization, in order that it may come to life
as a new step on the Church’s journey in her mission to
bring the Gospel of mercy to each person.
I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such
need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find
in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering
fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to
give comfort to every man and every woman of our time.
Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives
always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us
henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that
she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey:
our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an
open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive
the mercy of God.

The logo and the motto together provide a fitting
summary of what the Jubilee Year is all about. The
motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel
of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the
merciful example of the Father who asks us not to
judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and
forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo
– the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik – presents
a small summa theologiae of the theme of mercy. In
fact, it represents an image quite important to the early
Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders
the lost soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ
that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation
culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed
in such a way so as to express the profound way in
which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity
and does so with a love with the power to change one’s
life. One particular feature worthy of note is that while
the Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity
upon himself, his eyes are merged with those of man.
Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the
eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the
new Adam, one’s own humanity and the future that lies
ahead, contemplating, in his gaze, the love of the Father.
Second Sunday of Advent
The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the
shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and
medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures of
Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals, with
colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the
movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night
of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color
suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who
forgives all.

What is the Holy Door and what does it mean?
A holy door or porta sancta has been used since the
fifteenth century as a ritual expression of conversion.
Pilgrims and penitents pass through it as a gesture of
leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from
sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and from darkness
to light. Often these rituals are associated with prayer,
pilgrimage, sacrifice, confession, and indulgences.
But the door finds meaning only when the believer
associates the door with Christ. Jesus is the Door! In
the words of Pope Francis, “There is only one way that
opens wide the entrance into the life of communion
with God: this is Jesus, the one and absolute way to
salvation. To him alone can the words of the Psalmist be
applied in full truth: ‘This is the door of the Lord where
the just may enter’ (Ps 118:20).”
Saint John Paul II offers a similar exhortation: “To
focus on the door is to recall the responsibility of every
believer to cross its threshold. To pass through that
door means to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord; it is
to strengthen faith in him in order to live the new life
which he has given us. It is a decision which presumes
freedom to choose and also the courage to leave
something behind, in the knowledge that what is gained
is divine life [cf. Mt 13:44-46]” (Saint John Paul II,
Incarnationis Mysterium, 8, in the year 2000).
John’s gospel clearly depicts this relationship between
Jesus and us. “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate
for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and
robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the
gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and
will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes
only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that
5
they might have life, and have it more abundantly”
(John 10:7-10).
It is fitting that a Holy Door be situated within a
church building. The door of the Church is the ianua
ecclesia – “the silent witness to all the moments of our
lives” (USCCB, About the Jubilee Door, 1999). Often
sacramental rituals begin at the door – here, the priest
or deacon welcomes the parents as they bring their
child for baptism; here, he greets the bride and groom
as they begin the wedding liturgy; here, he greets the
catechumens at the Rite of Acceptance; and, finally, the
priest greets the casket at the beginning of the funeral
liturgy.
Therefore, let us create Holy Doors in our cathedrals or
other significant churches which can be worthy symbols
of Christ and a welcome invitation to seek Him within
our communities of faith.

Some excerpts from the letter of Pope Francis to Archbishop
Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the
Promotion of the New Evangelization, 1 September 2015.
With the approach of the Extraordinary Jubilee of
Mercy I would like to focus on several points which
I believe require attention to enable the celebration of
the Holy Year to be for all believers a true moment of
encounter with the mercy of God. It is indeed my wish
that the Jubilee be a living experience of the closeness
of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so
that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and
thus testimony to it be ever more effective.
My thought first of all goes to all the faithful who,
whether in individual Dioceses or as pilgrims to Rome,
will experience the grace of the Jubilee. I wish that the
Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine
experience of God’s mercy, which comes to meet each
person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and
forgives, forgetting completely the sin committed. To
experience and obtain the Indulgence, the faithful are
called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door,
open in every Cathedral or in the churches designated
by the Diocesan Bishop, and in the four Papal Basilicas
in Rome, as a sign of the deep desire for true conversion.
Likewise, I dispose that the Indulgence may be obtained
in the Shrines in which the Door of Mercy is open and in
the churches which traditionally are identified as Jubilee

Churches. It is important that this moment be linked,
first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation
and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with a
reflection on mercy. It will be necessary to accompany
these celebrations with the profession of faith and with
prayer for me and for the intentions that I bear in my
heart for the good of the Church and of the entire world.

I have asked the Church in this Jubilee Year to rediscover
the richness encompassed by the spiritual and corporal
works of mercy. The experience of mercy, indeed,
becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as Jesus
himself taught us. Each time that one of the faithful
personally performs one or more of these actions, he or
she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence. Hence
the commitment to live by mercy so as to obtain the
grace of complete and exhaustive forgiveness by the
power of the love of the Father who excludes no one.
The Jubilee Indulgence is thus full, the fruit of the very
event which is to be celebrated and experienced with
faith, hope and charity.
Additionally, I am thinking of those for whom, for
various reasons, it will be impossible to enter the Holy
Door, particularly the sick and people who are elderly
and alone, often confined to the home. For them it will
be of great help to live their sickness and suffering as an
experience of closeness to the Lord who in the mystery
of his Passion, death and Resurrection indicates the
royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness.
Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial,
receiving communion or attending Holy Mass and
community prayer, even through the various means
of communication, will be for them the means of
obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence. My thoughts also
turn to those incarcerated, whose freedom is limited.
The Jubilee Year has always constituted an opportunity
for great amnesty, which is intended to include the
many people who, despite deserving punishment, have
become conscious of the injustice they worked and
sincerely wish to re-enter society and make their honest
contribution to it. May they all be touched in a tangible
way by the mercy of the Father who wants to be close
to those who have the greatest need of his forgiveness.
They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapels of the
prisons. May the gesture of directing their thought and
prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold
of their cell signify for them their passage through
T he J ubilee I ndulgence
Furthermore, the Jubilee Indulgence can also be
obtained for the deceased. We are bound to them by the
witness of faith and charity that they have left us. Thus,
as we remember them in the Eucharistic celebration,
thus we can, in the great mystery of the Communion
of Saints, pray for them, that the merciful Face of the
Father free them of every remnant of fault and strongly
embrace them in the unending beatitude.
… Trusting in the intercession of the Mother of Mercy,
I entrust the preparations for this Extraordinary Jubilee
Year to her protection.

I ndulgence ?
“That person is carrying a lot of excess baggage.” We use this
expression to refer to ways of thinking or emotional states
that bring us down and keep us from being the fully human
person whom God intends us to be. Letting go of what doesn’t
count. It sounds so easy but it can be hard to put into practice.
Traditionally we use the term Purgatory to refer to the state
of purification which occurs after death. The Catechism
of the Catholic Church has a few paragraphs on Purgatory
and states: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but
still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal
salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to
achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.”
(CCC, #1030)
We must make up for the temporal punishment due to our
sins, in this life or after death, in Purgatory. The person who
dies without grave sin and who has not made up for the
natural consequences of their sin, in justice, has a need to be
purified of selfishness, the ego, and self-directed desires.
An example: If I steal $10 from you, you can forgive me.
However, in justice, I still need to make restitution to you
by giving you back the $10. You can forgive me, but I still
owe you the money back. Notice that there is forgiveness, but
there is still some temporal (“in time and space”) punishment
that is due to me, if I do not attempt restorative justice by
giving back the money.
An indulgence is what we receive when the Church lessens
the temporal penalties to which we may be subject ever
though our sins have been forgiven.
A plenary indulgence is the full remission of the temporal
punishment due to sin. A partial indulgence remits part of the
temporal punishment due to sin. Indulgences may be applied
to the dead “as suffrages.” A plenary indulgence may be
gained only once a day. We may gain many partial indulgences
each day. To gain a plenary indulgence, the Catholic must:
(1) be in the state of sanctifying grace, (2) do the indulgenced
work as stipulated by the Church, (3) fulfill the 3 conditions
for gaining plenary indulgences: Communion, sacramental
Confession, and prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions (Our
Father, Hail Mary, at least), and (4) exclude all attachment to
sin, even to venial sin. Note that Pope Francis is also asking
us to recite the Profession of Faith (Creed).
We can think of the indulgence as removing the excess
baggage (of our selfishness) that we carry around because of
the effects of our sins.

In the ancient Hebrew tradition, the Jubilee Year, which
was celebrated every 50 years, was meant to restore
equality among all of the children of Israel, offering
new possibilities to families which had lost their
property and even their personal freedom. In addition,
the Jubilee Year was a reminder to the rich that a time
would come when their Israelite slaves would once
again become their equals and would be able to reclaim
their rights. “Justice, according to the Law of Israel,
consisted above all in the protection of the weak” (St.
John Paul II, Tertio millenio adveniente 13).

pide no juzgar y no condenar, sino
perdonar y amar sin medida (cfr. Lc

esclavitud del dinero;
a la adúltera y a la Magdalena del buscar la felicidad
solamente en una creatura;
