29th Sunday A
Dear parish family,
The Church celebrates this weekend “World Mission Sunday”. It’s a worldwide celebration that reminds us of our
Christian calling to spread the faith and calls us to act in solidarity, through prayer and financially support, the
missionary work of the universal church. Pope Francis says, “It’s a privileged moment when the faithful of various
continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands.”
Mission Sunday differs from “Mission Appeals” done by particular Missionary congregations. We support from time to
time a particular group of missionaries in their area of responsibility whenever they come to us like for example the
Comboni Missionaries a few weeks ago. Mission Sunday however supports Mission churches rather than particular
missionary groups. Our contributions are sent to the Society for the Propagation of Faith, the Vatican’s office that
sustains the “mission territories” spread throughout the world. There are about 1,150 mission dioceses throughout
Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and the remote areas of Latin America. Our contributions therefore connect us to those
mission churches in their work of evangelization, and uplift those thirsting for hope and love. Let us be generous and,
above all, keep the Missions in our prayers
“Give to Caesar what is to Caesar and to God what is to God.” These are the words we hear this Sunday’s
gospel. At the outset, it is easy to understand regarding what and how to give to “Caesar” in our time - by rendering
our civic duties, paying our taxes, and so on. But why is it that people find it difficult to render back what is to God?
We render to God what belongs to God is not simply about attending Mass, or saying our prayers, although these are
part of it. Also it doesn’t simply mean the money we give in the collection baskets although this is part of how we
sacrifice or offer our gifts for God. The best way to measure how really good we are in rendering back to God what
belongs to him is our obedience to His word and His commandments, of how we follow the gospel, of how we practice
love, justice, and respect the dignity of others, and so on. In short, of how we live out our Christian life.
God’s blessings are beyond measure and out of proportion of what we give back to Lord. Yet somehow the
blessings we receive are just the “returns” of what we are giving to the Lord God. We can just imagine the abundance
of blessings of what God would be giving to us in return if only there are many people who are truly living a Christian
life! We can just imagine what a beautiful world this could be! Let us think therefore of what we can do more in giving
back to God what is due to Him in our homes, at work, and in particular in supporting our parish church.
Blessings to you and have a good week!
Fr. Tony
Querida familia parroquial,
Domingo 29 A
vivimos nuestra vida cristiana.
Padre Tony
