All the funds collected this Sunday are to be distributed by the Society of the Propagation of Faith to maintain and sustain the mission territories around the globe. Yet this is not just about those missionaries in the far flung areas and their need and our support for them. But also about us – we are reminded of the missionary nature of the entire Church. Mission Sunday therefore is about loving, living, appreciating and sharing one’s faith which was given to us at our baptism. It is about putting the Lord’s teachings and values into practice in our daily activities, in our professional life, in our relationships and in our homes. In our gospel reading this Sunday, Jesus describes two men who went to the temple to pray; only one came home justified. The bottom line in the story centers on their attitude towards God and others. In the story, the Pharisee sees only himself before God. He ends up boasting about his own righteousness and looked down on others. While the tax collector saw God and his holiness and he recognized his unworthiness. He begs for God's mercy. The tax collector went home right with God. While the Pharisee went home feeling to be right only with himself but in reality he was totally wrong before God. It is our acknowledgement of who we are before Him in truth and in humility that merits His attention. We hear the words from gospel, “those who humble themselves shall be exalted and those who exalt themselves shall be humbled.” The first reading from the book of Sirach exclaimed; “the prayer of the humble pierces to the heavens and it does not rest until it reaches its goal.” The gospel in a way tells us that our most challenging task as a Christian in our journey of life is to see ourselves as we really are and recognized where we failed for only then we can change for the better. The gospel says, the tax collector went home "justified"— he was changed. Something had changed in him through his prayer. If we are not changed by our prayers then perhaps we haven’t acknowledged God as the subject of our prayer and ourselves as the recipients of God’s actions. We may have said our prayers, but there is more to prayer than just words. Some people think our prayer can change God’s mind. Actually, true prayer will change us. Blessings to all and have a good week! Fr. P. Tony ST. More than a few have grumbled at the weight of this “treasure” from our tradition, yet from the pope’s vantage point, they are essential to his ministry. Pope John Paul II recalled his own experience as the Bishop of Kraków, visiting with Pope Paul VI in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The memory of those individual visits caused him to strengthen the format, assuring each of the world’s 2,744 bishops a privileged fifteen private minutes with the pope every five years. If you wonder what the pope does all day, the thought of dealing with five hundred bishops a year and reading their detailed reports on diocesan life should help fill up the calendar. Pope John Paul II used to say that he approached each individual meeting with the personal goal of learning something new about the Church, and his lively interest made the visits immensely worthwhile. The content of the private meetings remains under a privilege of secrecy, or as Cardinal Theodore McCarrick once said, “You’re only supposed to quote the pope if he tells a joke.” —Rev. In this Jubilee Year, we are asked to open our eyes and hearts to see how God is working in our lives and to more actively spread His mercy out to others. We are creating a Garland of Mercy with our teen group to bear witness to our efforts to help others. For the entire year, we are asking each week when you do works of mercy, to write down one or more works on the strips of paper in the ends of the pews. Please put them into the collection basket so that we offer up, not just our treasure to the Lord, but our time and talent in a visible way. Red Strips are for The Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, visiting the sick or imprisoned. White Strips are for The Spiritual Works of Mercy: Counseling the doubtful, bearing wrongs patiently, forgiving offences willingly and praying for the living and the dead. Gold Ones are for the acts of mercy which we received from others. I know that all of you are part of spreading God’s mercy out into the world. Please take the time to become more conscious of it and take credit for it here before the Lord.
