SAINT LAWRENCE THE MARTYR CATHOLIC CHURCH 4325 Don Julio Boulevard North Highlands, CA 95660 29 March 2015 Parish Office 916.332.4777 ▪ Fax24916.332.8325 August 2014 www.saintlawrencechurch.org MISSION STATEMENT The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and witness. In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in our midst. Page Two Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord PROPHETIC ANOINTING The solemnity of today’s readings invites us into silent contemplation of the mystery of our redemption. There are so many levels on which to understand the events of the Passion. The woman who anoints Jesus acts prophetically in a way that the other disciples do not yet grasp. Anointing is for priests, prophets, and kings, and also for the preparation of the dead. It is for healing and for holiness. Her action acknowledges the imminent events of the passion and death of the Lord, and points toward his resurrection and triumph over evil and death. He is priest and victim, prophet and God, King and Lord. All these things are acknowledged in her prophetic anointing. Copyright © J. S. Página Tres Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor T HE P ASTOR’ S C OLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Lenten experiences in the “wilderness of our lives” have brought us today to Palm Sunday. We had 40 days to think about our relationship with Christ, ourselves, and those we love. I pray that each one of you has found peace and reconciliation as we are about to enter the Holiest of Days beginning with the Passion of the Lord. I ask that you take time to “faithfully” reflect and understand what Christ has done for each of us, He took the “form of a slave, in human likeness, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death on a cross.” Can you imagine the strength, courage, fortitude, and immense love for the Father and for us that it cost Jesus—hanging between heaven and earth. . .suffocating, spikes through his hands and feet and abandoned by many of his followers! Today, are we coming to just take a piece of palm home or are we here to stand in solidarity with the Father, Jesus, and each other? Will we remain loyal to Christ as did the women who did not once think of abandoning Jesus in the face of such sever brutality. Or are we like Jesus’ disciples who scattered in “fear” for themselves when He needed them most? Let our “Hosannas” mean something as we enter Holy Week. Reflect throughout the year how significant a symbol the palm is to our catholic heritage and its purpose. . .faith and complete love of Christ because “He truly is the Son of God.” Let us lift up our hearts and spirits to give thanks and praise for what Jesus has done for us. Padre Enrique ST. Though now known officially as Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, confusion is understandable, since before the 1969 reform of the calendar two separate Sundays bore these titles. Passion Sunday was a week before Palm Sunday. To add to the confusion, the Gospel accounts of the Passion of the Lord were not read on Passion Sunday, but on Palm Sunday! On Passion Sunday, the cross and statues were veiled in full purple drapes. The organ had fallen silent at the beginning of Lent, and now the sanctuary bells were replaced by wooden clappers. The introit (opening chant) for the old Mass of Passion Sunday hints at a reason for reform: “Do me justice, O God, and fight my fight against a faithless people” (Psalm 42). This liturgy was laden with references to the “infidelity” of the Jews, a theme that gave rise to inflammatory preaching and, in some places, attacks against the persons and property of the Jewish people. This does not stand as a “treasure” of any sort in our tradition. Our authentic tradition, rather, is the ability to reflect and repent and to seek reconciliation with the Jews, our brothers and sisters in the love and service of God. Rev. GERTRUDE THE GREAT Our Lord told St. Gertrude the Great that the following prayer would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners as well: “Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for the Holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
