Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion
Today's Readings: Mk 11:1-10 or Jn 12:2-16; Is 50:4-7; Ps 22:8-9, 17-20, 23-24; Phil 2:6-11; Mk 14:1 -- 15:47 [15:1-39]
The contrast between the processional reading in today's liturgy and
the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse
of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he
must be hailed as the Messiah, the One Who Is to Come. He must
be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are
saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the
Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not
yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal
procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are
going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead
us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor.
A WELL-TRAINED TONGUE
What can be said after the reading of the Passion of the Lord? It
leaves us speechless and sad, and a little numb. We can look to the
words of Isaiah, who, speaking for Jesus, prophesies the eloquent
teaching of Jesus, his mistreatment at the hands of those he comes
to save, and ultimately, his victory over evil and death itself.
NOT DISGRACED
We can get distracted by the horror--so repelled that we turn away,
like the apostles, and want to run very far. But we miss the point
if we close our eyes to the meaning of the suffering. Jesus' death
showed that evil cannot have the last word, for it prepared the way
for his resurrection. We fear death, and wish we could make it go
away. So did the Lord. We are heavy and sad at the thought of his
suffering, of anyone's suffering, and we want to turn and run. So
did the Lord. Yet his obedience was perfect; he never heard a word
of God that he did not keep and teach others to do the same. His
death was his final "yes" to the will of God. And his resurrection is
God's final answer to the forces of evil and death.
Paul stresses Jesus' obedience, the fact that he listened to the word
of God, as Isaiah affirms, "Morning after morning / [God] opens my
ear that I may hear" (Isaiah 50:4). Jesus brings God's loving message,
and instead of welcome, he receives "buffets and spitting (Isaiah
50:6).
He humbles himself to be like us, even to death, a shameful and
horrific death by crucifixion. What are we to make of it all?

Good Friday Observance
Fasting and Abstinence from Eating Meat
Good Friday (April 3, 2015) is an obligatory day of universal fast and
abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their
18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a
person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not
to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all
who have reached their 14th year.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter
Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the
suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to
share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.
Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from
meat) for all who have completed their 14th year.

UNCIÓN PROFÉTICA
La solemnidad de las lecturas de hoy nos invita a una contemplación
silenciosa del misterio de nuestra redención. Hay tantas maneras
de comprender los sucesos de la Pasión. La mujer que unge a Jesús
se comporta proféticamente y de un modo que los otros discípulos
aún no comprenden. La unción es para los sacerdotes, los profetas
y los reyes, y también para la preparación de los muertos. Es para la
sanación y la santidad. Su acción reconoce los sucesos de la pasión
y la muerte del Señor que se avecinan, y señala hacia la resurrección
y el triunfo sobre el mal y la muerte. Jesús es sacerdote y víctima,
profeta y Dios, Rey y Señor. Todas estas cosas se hacen explícitas en
su unción profética.

su resurrección. Le tememos a la muerte y desearíamos poder
hacerla desaparecer. Lo mismo le pasó al Señor. Nos sentimos
apesadumbrados y tristes al pensar en su sufrimiento, en el
sufrimiento de cualquiera, y queremos apartarnos y correr. Lo

Observancia de Viernes Santo
El Ayuno y la Abstinencia de Comer Carne
El Viernes Santo (3 de abril de 2015) es día universal de ayuno
obligatorio y la abstinencia. El ayuno es obligatorio para todos los
que han cumplido los 18 años y todavía no han llegado a los 60 años.
El ayuno permite comer una comida completa. Dos comidas más
pequeñas se pueden comer, no para igualar una comida completa. La
abstinencia (de carne) es obligatoria a partir de los 14 años.
Si es posible, el ayuno del Viernes Santo se continúa hasta la Vigilia
de Pascua (en la noche del Sábado Santo) como el "ayuno pascual"
en honor a la pasión y muerte del Señor Jesús, y para prepararnos
para participar más plenamente y celebrar Su Resurrección.
Los viernes de Cuaresma son días obligatorios de abstinencia
completa (de la carne) para todos los que han cumplido 14 años.

Easter Flower Envelope
Our Holy Week/Easter décor budget comes from the generous
donations received through the Flower Envelope. Every registered
family received a 'Flower Envelope' in their March/April Offering
Envelope Package. We ask you to please use the envelope to
submit your donation at your earliest convenience. You may drop
the envelope in the collection basket or turn it in to the Parish
Center. Thank you for contributing to our efforts in beautifying our
sanctuary for the joyous season of Easter!

Special Easter Intention Envelope
Special Easter Intention Envelopes
are available at all church' vestibules. These intentions will be
remembered at all Masses during the Easter Season (Easter Vigil;
April 4th - Pentecost; May 24th). The envelopes will be placed on
the altar. Please write your intention on the envelope, enclose your
donation and drop in the collection basket.

La Palabra de Dios Hoy
Nuestro camino cuaresmal de conversión llega hoy a la ciudad santa de Jerusalén. "¡Dios mío, Dios mío! ¿Por qué me has abandonado?"
Durante toda la Cuaresma hemos venido caminando con el Señor hacia Jerusalén. Hoy él entra en la ciudad santa en medio de
aclamaciones de gozo y regocijo. Esas aclamaciones de gozo pronto se convirtieron en aclamaciones de dolor y angustia, que culminaron
en las palabras de abandono que Jesús pronunció desde la cruz. Nos podemos imaginar la desesperación que experimentó el Señor cuando
se sintió abandonado de todos, especialmente de su propio Padre. Al disponernos a escuchar la palabra de Dios recordemos el dolor y la
angustia que el Señor Jesús sufrió por nosotros.
