Sunday, March 22, 2015 ~ The Fifth Sunday of Lent MARCH 22, 2015 Dear friends / Mis amigos queridos, Many people spend their whole lives looking for meaning, for their personal mission, special purpose or reason for being. They are searching, as the French would say, for a raison d’être. Usually this realization grows over time as we mature and become aware of others and ourselves. In addition we are gradually sensitized to a relationship with God that hopefully becomes a filter through which we view life. Today in the gospel Jesus articulates His awareness of His life and purpose. That, too, developed gradually as He lived His human life and carried out His public ministry in the way He believed that God wanted. It became clearer to Jesus that His words and commitment to God’s plan would bring Him into conflict with the religious and political powers of His day. There would be a price to pay for His obedience to the Father. So He declares in this week’s gospel that His “hour” had come, a phrase unique to John to indicate the whole ordeal of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Christ. Jesus’ “hour” – as understood in John’s gospel – did not involve sixty minutes or mark out any temporal span. It was in this “hour” that Jesus would draw all people to God. Two other incidents in the life of the Lord give insight into His reason for coming among us: His baptism and His transfiguration. At these two events and in today’s gospel, a voice from the sky (God) reveals the identity and purpose of Jesus. While it was the most significant moment of His life, Jesus’ “hour” was shared by many others. All people are drawn to Him and to the importance of this event. There are many things that Christ says or does (or does not say or do) that you and I could emulate. One is His attitude toward His impending suffering and death. He could have viewed Himself as a victim of Roman or Jewish intolerance; instead, He accepted what was to occur as the ultimate sacrifice necessary for gaining eternal life for those who believed in Him. Only the seed that falls to the ground, withers and dies will know the gift of eternal life. Over the centuries many people have made Jesus’ mind their own and have followed Him in offering their lives for the faith. They have echoed Jesus’ very words. In a letter written to the church community in Rome, St. Ignatius of Antioch declared: “I am the grain of God, and let me be ground by the teeth of the wild beasts that I may be found the pure bread of Christ.” Like Jesus, Ignatius fell to the ground and died, and many came to a deeper faith because of his witness. Ignatius found his reason for being in living, suffering, and dying for the Lord. Have you found yours? If not, what better time than Lent to continue the search? +++++++++++++++++++++ After hours of sorting through parish registers by many staff persons, St. Stanislaus Church filed its 2014 Pastoral Report to the Archdiocese late last month. The Pastoral Report is an important resource for the centralized Office of Planning and Research, which provides support to the Archbishop and others in Archdiocesan administration. Data is collected from all parishes and can be used for various development and organizational purposes, including special projects, education, identifying where pastoral services can be shared among parishes, etc. It is also a prime information source when hard decisions have to be made about parish viability, or the inability to provide resources to parishes. The purpose of a parish is the spiritual care of souls, and as we know, we live in a much more transient world. People move, neighborhood are re-purposed, or not enough parishioners remain in an area to support its infrastructure. The findings for St. Stanislaus will be offered for your information on an insert in next weekend’s bulletin. If you have ever asked the question of your priests and ministry-staff “what do they do all day?” this will give you a good overview. I am particularly impressed, as in years past, with the generosity with which the various activities of our parish social ministry are made possible. Thank you for remembering the poor and less fortunate! +++++++++++++++++++++ Thanks to all who supported the MATER DEI CATHOLIC SCHOOL production of Little Mermaid Jr. last weekend. What a great way for our children to develop a sense of poise and a deeper level of comfort in being in front of a group! Sunday’s show which I attended was, like the others on Friday and Saturday, an enjoyable experience that showcased the talents of our school’s play TEAM. Special thanks to director Jason Strefeler and his assistant directors, and to the stage parents who were responsible for the awesome scenery. Next up: the 53rd Annual Penny Party on Tuesday, March 24th. Doors open at 6 pm, with the opening auctions starting at 7:30 pm. HAVE A GOOD WEEK EVERYONE! Lent Liturgical Bits and Bytes for the Bulletin Concluding Good Friday How does the Good Friday liturgy end? Or does it? There is no final blessing or recessional, because this is not the end. This is just the second installment of the three-part liturgy called “Triduum.” So the end is silent, the ministers walk silently back to the sacristy. The people are free to leave, also in silence, or to remain longer in prayer. The conclusion comes with great flourish on the next night at the Easter Vigil, when this three-day liturgical celebration finally concludes with an Easter celebration. Holy Week Evening of Reflection "The Agony and Joy of Acceptance" March 31, 2015 ~ 7 to 8:30 pm ~ Parish Chapel Format: Two reflections, quiet times and a concluding blessing. Busy Lent? Take some time as our season enters now the most important week of all: Holy Week. Fr. Michael Mullan will offer some food for thought about the big Mysteries so as to experience even greater joy this Easter. He will focus particularly on the theme of "Greater Interior Freedom." Jesus ultimately was free before His Cross. In putting his strength into accepting the Will of the Father, He was then free to love. So often our energy goes into avoiding crosses. Yet how do I "accept" suffering? How will that make me happier? Our Lord wants us to be free, absolutely free and that takes great courage and strength from above. Watch and pray! Let's enter into the great mysteries of His Love in a spirit of prayer and find rest for our weary hearts.
