Sunday, March 8, 2015 ~ The Third Sunday of Lent
MARCH 8, 2015
Dear friends / Mis amigos queridos,
All of us have been angry, maybe even to the point of rage. We have had that moment when we wanted to get even, strike back, shout down, take apart. The causes can be many: persistent disappointments, continued incompetence, non-stop criticism by someone in authority. Anger, it seems to me, can take a multitude
of directions. It can shut us off from whoever or whatever made us angry in the first place, and cause us to put
up walls and cut off bridges to others. This is “bad anger” because it takes us into ourselves and makes us want
to do harm, evil or sin greater than the cause of our own anger. It seeks punishment and revenge on those who
have hurt us.
“Good anger,” on the contrary, takes us outside ourselves. It emboldens us to take a stand against injustice, to confront wrongful circumstances and those who do wrong, to resolve to undo what hurts or diminishes another person. “Good anger” takes the form of transformation, positive change and strength of resolve.
It is always open for reconciliation. Rather than an outburst of pure emotion, “good anger” is controlled and
reasoned. It cries out to make things better and for healing to occur.
Transferred to behavior, we must not act IN anger, but act OUT of anger.
In the gospel today, Jesus was angry for what He witnessed in the Temple area. Was this God’s house
or the town market? For some, His outburst might be a bit disconcerting, but His was the type of anger that
railed for change and transformation. The Temple had been desecrated and the merchants and money changers had even cheated the poor for their own profit!
Jesus acted out of a place of complete control. His anger restores the Temple to its rightful purpose and
brings justice to the victimized poor. These actions will cost the Lord dearly, but He would not stand by and
allow the devaluation of the Temple to continue. Now He was “on the radar” for the Jerusalem leadership
who opposed Him and His gospel. Anything they could use for weaponry against Him was remembered, and
the incident in today’s gospel certainly would have been seared in their memories.
Lent is a time to invite the “good anger” of Jesus in the Gospel into unjust situations around us. Raising one’s voice against injustice and standing up for the weak before the powerful is a noble task. Demanding
accountability of those who abuse others for their own gain is one of the ways we imitate the anger of Jesus in
the gospel. Certainly such actions are never easy, but with God’s grace we can find the help to turn over the
fears, ambitions and prejudices that distort our relationships with one another and with God.
+++++++++++++++++++++
Already we begin the Third Week of Lent, and our 9 am celebration will include a different gospel and
introduce a new rite. This is the day for the celebration of the first scrutiny for the elect (i.e., those who will
make their Easter sacraments). Instead of using the readings of the current cycle, the liturgy recommends the
use of the A Cycle readings only at Masses where the scrutinies are celebrated. This is the story of Jesus’ meeting with the Samaritan woman at the well.
A scrutiny is the name given to the three brief ceremonies for those who are preparing for baptism at
the Easter vigil. These ceremonies are celebrated on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent. At the scrutiny, these people are presented to the Church community, which prays for them, so that they may defeat sin
and Satan, successfully endure temptation, and be strengthened in Christ. The purpose of these prayers for the
elect (and for us who witness!) is to assist them in looking deeper into themselves to root out the lingering effects of sin in their lives, to help bring about full conversion, and specifically to battle the influence of the evil
one, who often assails those who are about to enter the Church.

HAVE A GOOD WEEK EVERYONE!

Stations of the Cross
During Lent, Stations of the Cross take place on
Tuesdays at 7 pm in Spanish, and on Fridays at 2
pm and 7 pm in English, in the Church.
Sacrament of Reconciliation During Lent
Archbishop Chaput has asked all parishes to provide
for additional time for the sacrament of reconciliation during the holy season of Lent. At Saint Stanislaus, we are celebrating the sacrament between the
end of the 9 am Mass and the beginning of the 11
am Mass in Church. This will continue through
Palm Sunday. If the lines are long around 10:50 am,
please come at another time as we should not be celebrating two sacraments at the same time in the
Church. Every effort will be made to accommodate
those who are in line by the 11 am start of Mass. We
will continue to offer opportunities for reconciliation
on Saturdays from 8:30 to 9 am and from 4 to 4:45
pm, or anytime by appointment. Call the parish office to schedule an appointment if these times are
inconvenient for you.
Thank you so much for your generosity to our Parish
Food Cupboard during the March Food Collection
last weekend. We appreciate how you remember and
give assistance to help our needy brothers and sisters, not only at this time of the year but all year
long! And we also greatly appreciate the wonderful
volunteers who helped bring the donations to our
food cupboard, on the ground floor of the Parish
Center. Thank you for all you do! May God bless
you and your families abundantly. And may you all
be safe during this stormy winter season!
With gratitude, Sister Barbara

otra persona?
