APEX NEWCOMERS & FRIENDS CLUB www.apexnewcomers.org FEBUARY 2015 Apex Newcomers & Friends Club (ANFC) is a not-for-profit social organization. ANFC promotes interest in local, civic, cultural, and service programs. General Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month (September through May) at the C. C. Jones Building, 309 Holleman Street, Apex, at 9:30 a.m. Prospective members are welcome to try 2 visits to any function before joining. The annual non-refundable dues are $25.00 per year plus a donation of $2.00 at each meeting to help defray the cost of hospitality and building use. An additional fee of $7.50 will be charged for those people requesting a copy of the newsletter be mailed to them. SPECIAL: Bring a friend to the general meeting and receive 2 entries into the door prize drawing! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s celebration!! Sadly, we had to cancel the January Meeting, due to the icy roads. A REMINDER—ONE OF THE RULES OF THE CLUB, AND IT IS LISTED IN THE NEWSLETTER AND BY-LAWS, WE DO CANCEL A MEETING IF THE WAKE SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED OR HAVE A DELAY OF ANY SCHOOL OPENING TIME! Sorry for those who did not remember or did not know about the rule. Several guests were going to attend, and I hope they attend in February. Sharon and Pat (and many members) have been busy giving the Quilt Raffle tickets out to members to begin selling. If you have not received your tickets and attend the February meeting, please be sure to pick up your tickets, so Sharon does not have to mail the tickets out. The quilt will be raffled off at the auction on April 8th. Several members delivered useful items to the USO before Christmas. In their letter of thanks to the Club, the USO had several requests. The USO provides many services to members of the US Military—Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, retirees—and their families. If you are not familiar with their services, look them up online: WWW.USO-NC.ORG. Their requests are: A group to provide meals to feed the growing number of traveling Marines on Tuesdays; A sewing group to sew neck pillows for travelers. Contact Eileen for the link to a pattern; And a pattern for Christmas stockings—it is not too early, they say, to plan for next Christmas. Another member is going to tour the USO through another organization and plans to bring playing cards with her. Eleanor S & I received a tour when we brought them the Club donation last June. We would be glad to arrange a tour for any member interested. Just be certain to let us know you would like to attend when we bring this year’s donation in June. I received a letter from a woman who has recently moved to Wake Forest. She does not drive and is looking to make acquaintances from the area, by letter, phone, or visit. Please contact me for her information if you are interested. APEX NEWCOMERS & FRIENDS CLUB www.apexnewcomers.org FEBRUARY 2015 The next few months will be very interesting: April 8th is the date of our auction—our big moneymaker for the donations we give out in May/June. We always have many wonderful gifts to auction off, so please plan to attend and bring your checkbook along with you. Also, we will begin the process of looking for a new slate of many of the officers, so we will first need a Nominating Committee—think about being on that committee. May 13th is the date of our Picnic, again at the Apex Community Park, the large shelter, using the Laura Duncan entrance. There is plenty of room for tennis, bocce, and other lawn games. Husbands or partners are invited to attend also. February is the month of Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Ash Wednesday. Hope to see you on February 11th. I do have some and will distribute them possibly in March. FUNDRAISING Coordinators: Sharon V. & Pat. H. I have seen some members at different times and given them their tickets, but the rest of you all will receive them at the February meeting. Anyone who has received their tickets can turn their money and ticket stubs in at this meeting also. As I have previously said please keep saving your gently used items for the auction in April.
