Effects of Acute Weightlessness on Strength Variables Utilizing a Negative Head-down Tilt
Position
In a research study conducted at Springfield College, upper extremity muscular strength and
muscular endurance were assessed in a simulated microgravity environment utilizing a negative
head-down tilt position. Redistribution of fluid to the thorax and cephalic region yielded a
significant decrease in muscular endurance. Possible physiological mechanisms will be
discussed as well as effects of microgravity on human musculature.
