Who Is the Wise and Faithful Steward?
“Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master has set over his household
to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant
whom his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly,
I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.”
Matthew 24:45-47
Have you ever considered the questions Jesus asks? "Who is the wise and faithful
steward?” What is a steward? A dictionary tells us a steward is “A person who
manages property, finances or other affairs for someone else.” In the Bible's way of
looking at things, God has appointed you and me as stewards of all there is. In the
beginning, God said of Adam and Eve, “Let them have dominion over the fish of the
sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth...” (Genesis
1:26). In other words, we’re property managers. And everything is God’s property.
Psalm 24 says, "The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof" (Psalm 24:1).
Everything comes from God. It's ours on loan to enjoy, use and share. Which means all
that we have is not ours to do with as we please, but ours to use and manage in ways
that please God. You say, "But what I have is the result of my doing. My work. My
ingenuity.” To which the Bible’s comeback is, "You may say to yourself, 'My power and
the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.' But remember the LORD
your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…'" (Deuteronomy
8:17-18). In the Bible's way of looking at things all we are and all we have comes from
God. God is the owner. We are God’s stewards, appointed by God to enjoy, manage
and use all that we have received wisely and faithfully.
Stewardship is a favorite topic of our Lord’s. In the Bible you'll find 500 verses on
prayer, less than 500 on the topic of faith, but more than 2,350 Bible verses on the
stewardship of finances and material possessions. Or what about this: of Jesus' 43
parables, 27 have to do with managing money and possessions. Or again, one- tenth of
the verses in the Gospels deal with money and possessions. This is to say that disciples
then (and now) might wish that Jesus would stay out of pocketbooks and stick to
heaven but Jesus mentions pocketbook and heaven in the same breath so often that it’s
as if maybe, just maybe, there is a relationship between stewardship and salvation.
Which brings us back to Jesus' question: Who then is the wise and faithful steward? I
invite you to personalize it and ask, "Am I a wise and faithful steward?" Am I managing
my God-given talents, know-how, physical strength and financial resources in such a
way that when God reviews the record of my life's stewardship, audits my life's books to
see how well I've managed all God has given me to take care of, God might say, "Well
done, good and faithful steward?"
So what constitutes wise and faithful stewardship? Are there biblical criteria by which
we might evaluate our stewardship? There are four biblical principles that add up to
what might be called "Giving by the Book," giving that merits the title of "wise and
faithful stewardship.”
1-The principle of priority. Give to God first.
Wise and faithful stewardship always puts God first. Moses teaches the people of God
to give God “the first fruits” of their crops. "Take some of the first fruits of all that you
produce from the soil of the land the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a
basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his
Name" (Deuteronomy 26:2). The operative word is first. First fruits. Give priority to God.
Proverbs echoes this with the words, “Honor the Lord with your substance and with the
first fruits of all your produce” (Proverbs 3:9). God’s share comes off the top.
The question then is do we give God “first fruits” or leftovers? At the first of the month,
on the first day of the week, who gets the first fruits of our labors? Is God our first
thought or an afterthought? I know the first of the month, there is any number of others
out there on our doorstep waiting to cut in line and take God's rightful place at the head
of line. We are all too aware of who comes knocking on the door the first of each month:
Visa, mortgage company, city, utilities, groceries, etc. All these and many more take
our first fruits (not to mention our second, third, fourth and fifth fruits) and God most of
the time ends up with the leftovers, if anything at all.
The bottom line is that when we come to church on Sunday, it’s a grand occasion to
confess our faith on the first day of the week with the first fruits of our labors. In
response to the first commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” we can
put God first. The wise and faithful steward gives God “first fruits,” not leftovers.
2-The principle of regularity. Give to God regularly.
Paul says, “On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside...” (1
Cor 16:2). The first day of every week, regularly. In the Old Testament, the call is to set
aside a tithe of one’s crops “year in and year out.” Again the principle of regularity.
Regularly, when the crops come in, when the paycheck arrives, when Sunday comes.
Regularly, as opposed to what? Haphazardly? Every once in a while? Whenever I think
about it? Whenever I feel like it? Whenever I get around to it?
Why the importance of regularity in giving thanks to God with our offerings? Well, how
often does God bless us so as to occasion our thanksgiving? Sporadically?
Occasionally? Once in a blue moon? No! In response to God's blessing us with all good
gifts regularly, we give thanks regularly as well. The principle of regularity is a measure
of wise and faithful stewardship.
3-The principle of proportionality. Give to God proportionately.
Deuteronomy 16:10 says, "...give a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the
LORD your God has given you.” Paul writes, "On the first day of the week let each one
of you lay aside something, storing up as he may prosper.” (1 Corinthians 16:2).
Note the Bible presents as a guideline for giving the notion of proportion as opposed to
a specific amount. What's the wisdom in that? If everyone were called to give the same
amount, that would hardly be fair. If people of greater and lesser means were called to
give the same amount that wouldn’t be right. Instead, the Bible invites all to give in
equal measure in proportion to what they have.
One day Jesus sat in the temple watching people making their offerings. (an interesting
thought, that Jesus watches us make our offerings). As he looked up, Jesus saw the
rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very
small copper coins. "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than
all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her
poverty put in all she had to live on." (Luke 12:1-4). Those others were putting in much
more than the widow, but in terms of the principle of proportionality her gift exceeded
theirs by far and drew Jesus’ praise. What proportion you may ask? The biblical
standard, you may know, is a proportion of 10% or a tithe which simply means “onetenth.” “You shall tithe all the yield of your seed, which comes forth from the field year
by year” (Deuteronomy 14:22). "All the tithe of the land, whether the seed of the land or
of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s, it is holy to the LORD.” (Leviticus 27:30)
Tithing is a sacred thread throughout the Bible. The wise and faithful stewards of the
Bible invariably practice the principle of proportionality by tithing. Mention is made that
Abraham (Genesis 14:20), Jacob (Genesis 18:22), and Moses (see above passages) all
tithed. Depending on where you are now in your giving (I encourage you to do the math
and see what percentage you give to God), 10% may or may not seem like an imposing
goal. Perhaps you could determine to increase your giving to God by 1 percent of your
income year by year as you grow toward the biblical standard of a tithe. Look at it this
way: God gives you everything and let’s you keep 90% of it. What a deal!” Wise and
faithful stewardship involves the principle of proportionality.
4-The principle of gratitude. Give to God cheerfully.
Principles one, two, and three—giving to God first fruits, regularly, and proportionally—
sour if not done in the spirit of principle four. Giving of your own free will gratefully and
cheerfully.
In Moses words, "Take from among you an offering to the Lord, whoever is of a
generous heart... And they came, every one whose heart stirred him, and everyone
whose spirit moved him, and brought the Lord’s offering” (Exodus 35:5, 21) In Paul’s
words, “Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7) Paul’s qualifying the
offerings God desires by using the words “not reluctantly or under compulsion” points to
the fact that there are any number of motivations for giving not all of which are
desirable. There is a ladder of giving, each rung of which represents an increasingly
desirable motivation. The bottom rung is Guilt: “I do something because if I don’t I’ll feel
badly.” The next rung up is Obligation: “It’s something I ought to do, so I’ll do it.” The
next step up is a big one, be careful the rung of Compassion: “I enjoy giving because it
makes a difference in someone else’s life.” The next and highest rung is Thanksgiving:
“Praise God from whom all blessings flow. My offering flows forth from a cup that
runneth over.” Wise and faithful stewards practice the principle of gratitude, cheerful
givers whose offerings seek to praise God and bless others. So who then is the wise
and faithful steward? Am I a wise and faithful steward? I’ve shared with you four biblical
principles by which to evaluate your stewardship and to guide your giving:
The principle of priority
The principle of regularity
The principle of proportionality
The principle of gratitude
Put these principles into practice and you’re on the right track toward wise and faithful
stewardship.

ADULT SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT
The Adult Spiritual Enrichment class is learning about
the Feasts of the Church this semester. All adults are
welcome. Please join us in the Aegean Hall after Holy
Communion. Classes this month will be held on Sunday,
February 22, 2015.
CATECHISM
Parents, please remember to bring healthy individual
snacks for our students. On February 8th, our children
will be learning about Missions. On February 15th,
will be our Elementary Oratorical Festival, held in the
classroom, and February 22nd will be our Junior and
Senior Divisions of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical
Festival, held in the Church.
COFFEE FELLOWSHIP
Holy Trinity continues to provide coffee for the Sunday
Coffee Fellowship. Please consider sponsoring a coffee
hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial,
birthday, etc. Please understand that the coffee social
does not begin until after Divine Liturgy. The Agape
Ballroom will be unlocked after the final dismissal prayer
is given by the Priest.
DANCE TROUPES
Dance classes will begin again in March after catechism
classes. We have made changes to our dance program
to accommodate its increasing growth. This year we are
excited to announce a few new divisions as well as an
adult learning division. Please see the list in this monthly
bulletin. We look forward to seeing you all in March!
FOOD & CLOTHING DRIVE
While you are grocery shopping, remember those less
fortunate than yourself. Show your appreciation for
the good things in your life by picking up one or two
items per week for someone in need. Two receiving
baskets have been permanently placed in the Narthex
to receive your contributions, which will be forwarded
to local families in need. If you have clothes to bring to
church for the homeless, please bring them during office
hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. In
November & December we fed 29 families and a total
of 80 people. The Ephraim Project thanks you for your
continued support.

PAN-ORTHODOX FEEDINGS
The monthly pan-Orthodox feeding of the homeless
will take place on Friday, February 27th, at St. George
Orthodox Church. Those planning to cook should arrive
at noon, and those planning to set-up or serve should
arrive at 4 pm and stay until 6 pm.
PARISH ASSEMBLY
The spring Parish Assembly will be held on Sunday,
March 22nd. Please be sure to submit your Stewardship
Commitment Card before February 22nd to be eligible
to vote in the spring Parish Assembly.

ST. JOHN ORATORICAL FESTIVAL
The Oratorical Festival for the Junior and Senior
Divisions (children grades 7 through 12) is going to be
held on Sunday, February 22nd, after the Divine Liturgy.
We are SO excited to hear from our children and the
speeches they have prepared on this year’s topics. We will
be working with the children who sign up to participate
in the competition in the coming weeks leading up to
February 22nd. As part of that, they will be practicing
giving their speeches after Catechism class. If you have

which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and

when we believe in God, to whom we give our love,

Philoptochos Membership – Through Philoptochos, we fully exercise our Christianity. Whether our time, talents and

works that benefit those whom Philoptochos serves. It is through this love, support and dedication of our members that
allows Philoptochos to continue our important mission of commitments to Holy Trinity, our community and the many

“Sports 4 the Kids” Philoptochos has taken on a new charity which provides homeless and disadvantaged kids in Central
Florida an opportunity to participate in sports. This organization will accept useable sports equipment such as cleats &
shoes, helmets & apparel. shinguards & pads, bats & gloves, Lacross sticks, tennis rackets, golf clubs and balls. Please let
a Philoptochos Board member know if you have any of this equipment.
St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church – Recently you were sent a letter regarding the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
destroyed in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. The Church is being resurrected on hallowed ground bearing
witness to the victory of Christ over evil, death and destruction. An appeal has been made to each of us in our Chapter
to consider an offering to this campaign. Please make checks payable to Holy Trinity Philoptochos. Thank you for your
support.
Heart Pillows – Once again we are making heart pillows to be given to the hospital heart patients. We need your help.
We are asking for volunteers to help cut out the pillow patterns, sew the pillows and stuff the pillows. This can be done
at home at your leisure. If you would like to take some fabric home, cut out the pillows or sew them, please see Julia
Nikitas or any Board member. Julia will have fabric, thread and stuffing available for you to take home. This outreach
project is an important part of giving to our community. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Sunshine Committee – This is a major part of our ministry. We knit healing shawls to present to those who are ill with
prayers for a quick recovery. If you like to knit, we can use your expertise. Contact any Board member if you are
interested in participating in this ministry.
“It’s All Greek to Me” – The third reprint of our cookbook is now available for sale. The cookbooks are $16.00. We also

“It’s All Greek to Me, Two” We are preparing a sequel to our cookbook. This is an important fundraiser for Philoptochos
and we hope you will contribute your favorite recipes, including Lenten recipes. Recipe forms are available in the
Narthex. Submit your recipes to Luz Xikis, Mary Mantzaris or any Board member. Help us ensure our community
cookbook will be a success.
Baptismal Items - Planning a baptism, Philoptochos is selling the items needed for your baptism. We have decorated
candles and the necessary items such as sheet, towels, oil, soap, etc., all in one package or sold separately. Interested,
please see Luz Xikis or any Board member.
USO Phone Home Project – We are still collecting old cell phones to benefit our soldiers. The funds received from the
phones is turned over to the USO for our soldiers to “phone home”. Bring your phones to Church and deposit them in
the container located just outside the Gift Shop.
Hunger Knows No Holiday – While you are grocery shopping, continue to remember those less fortunate. Show your
appreciation for the good things in your life by picking up one item per week for someone in need and deposit it into the
collection baskets located in the Narthex. Thank you for your generosity.
Ephraim Project Feeding – Volunteers are needed to help with the Pan Orthodox feedings of the homeless at St. George
Church. Help is needed to serve food.

The Holy Trinity operating budget for the calendar year 2015 will be $803,705. Our Stewardship giving
should support all the Parish Ministries and the entire operating budget.
Our Stewardship GOAL is $500,000 for 2015
We should not depend on special affairs to meet our budget, for this is our direct responsibility. Stewardship places the responsibility
on us, for we are the recipients of God’s gifts and play an active role in perpetuating His work of salvation. The expenses of our
Parish are vital to our Church for: •Keeping in Touch With You •Maintaining our Buildings •Those Who Serve Us •Worship and
Education •National Ministries Commitment.
