Saturday: 9A.M. - 12 Noon February 1, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time AUTHORITY FROM GOD According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends. That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Covered California & MediCal Free Enrollment Assistance Open Enrollment ends Sunday, February 15. Building St. Nicholas...W indows Four stained-glass windows designed by Joe Maes, a Laguna Beach artist, were installed in the new Church. Located in each of the two transepts, these windows illustrate in a contemporary style, the Five Joyful Mysteries. The sequence begins at the end of the west transept on the large parking lot side of the church. The window on the left combines the first and second Joyful Mysteries—the Annunciation and Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. At the top, Mary kneels before the Angel Gabriel as a dove descends over her head. In the lower right hand corner, Elizabeth embraces Mary. The window on the right depicts the Nativity. At the end of the east transept (small parking lot side) on the left, we find the infant Jesus in the arms of Simeon on the day of His Presentation. The widow Anne looks on. The window on the right portrays the finding of the boy Jesus in the temple. Mary, Joseph, and a priest observe Jesus who appears to be standing in a heavenly spotlight as He addresses the elders. The two windows on the sides of the transepts were added in mid-1984. The one on the west depicts the Assumption of Mary and the one on the east, the crowning of Mary, Queen of Heaven. In both, Mary is clothed in brilliant blue. Do you feel called to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the altar on Sunday and/or to the sick? This year, our local chapters are providing the wheelchairs for needy veterans in Orange County. The St. Nicholas Council of Knights of Columbus is asking for your support in funding the purchase of wheelchairs for these vets. A $150 donation purchases and delivers a wheelchair to a veteran who is in need of such a medical device but who does not qualify to get one through the veteran administration in a timely manner. The delivery of a wheelchair to a person without mobility improves the quality of life for the entire family. It is estimated that each wheelchair we deliver impacts an average of 10 people in a positive way. We will be requesting donations after all Masses on February 7 and 8. We will accept a donation for a wheelchair or any portion of one that you can afford. Thanks for your support! Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Nicholas Parish Assembly St. Nicholas Parish Pastoral Council will hold our third Parish Assembly on Saturday, February 7, from 1PM till 3:40PM. The Pastoral Council will present the completed Parish Pastoral Plan to St. Nicholas’ parishioners during this Assembly. Data to complete the Pastoral Plan was collected by the Pastoral Council during the past two Parish Assemblies. In addition, the Council collected ideas and information from the clergy and from meetings and interviews with various parish ministries. The Council reviewed the data, summarized it and organized the information in a clear, understandable manner. The Plan, which reflects the input of the clergy and parishioners, addresses the direction the Parish will follow for the next three or more years. It will be our guideline for the future. Please join us in the Parish Hall on February 7th as we continue our celebration of 50 years for St. Nicholas Parish by revealing our Plan for the future of our parish! Thank you to all who donated to Micah’s Way on Sunday, January 25th.
