There are advantages and
disadvantages to having old stuff. The
advantages are that older things are tried
and true; inanimate friends, if you will,
once you get accustomed to their quirks,
maximize their strengths and compensate
for their weaknesses. The disadvantages to having old
stuff is that those things are probably obsolete, difficult to
service, and quite possibly expensive to replace.
Our parish plant is old itself, and full of old stuff. Among
them is the computer system that drives the heating and
cooling system in the church and hall. It was installed in
approximately 1997, and has given faithful, if erratic
service since that time. We have learned to compensate
for its deficiencies. But, the hour has come to replace it.
After taking several bids, the bid that promises the best
quality replacement comes to $14,000. We tried to keep
the old one in service, but let’s get real. How many of us
are still using our computers from the Clinton
administration?
Another disadvantage to having “old stuff” is that it breaks
down unexpectedly. Witness the furnace for the upstairs
of the parish offices. It gave out last week. Upon
investigation we discovered that this furnace was the
original equipment in the house, dating to 1954. We got
good value from it. So, in the interest of comfort and public
safety, we replaced it with a current model. That bill came
to $4,000.
Finally, getting the stained glass windows in the church
repaired has been a long time pet project, but one that has
been delayed several times as new needs pop up. I would
very much like to get this done this summer. That is going
to cost $13,500.
I tell you all this because I know how proud you all are of
the parish and the church. I also know that you all would
like to see the place be as safe and comfortable as
possible. Therefore, I am asking for your help. In the
bulletin today, you will find envelopes marked
“Maintenance Fund.” You may put them in the collection
basket next week.
As always, you have my deepest gratitude. I continue to
be amazed at your kindness and generosity.
Blessings!

Eucharistic Perpetual Adoration
Jesus said, “Cannot you spend just one hour with
me?” (Matthew 26:40)
Having Perpetual Adoration at St. Philomena’s
Catholic parish provides an easy, attractive and
practical way of rendering God adoration which is
His due as our Creator, of giving thanks to Him for
our redemption, of making reparations for our sins
and for the sins of mankind, of petitioning God for
the constant help we need.
The spiritual graces that we receive as a parish
from having Perpetual Adoration are too numerous
to mention.
If you would like to become a part of the Eucharistic
Adoration, contact the office at 206-878-8709 and
we’ll put you in touch with any one of the captains
of the Eucharistic Adoration.

ARE YOU WALKING IN THE
FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS?
Religious Education/Faith Formation
Religious Education:
Thanks to each of you for picking up your children
inside the school. I know that it is really hard for me
to see cars in the dark so I can image it would be
really , really hard for the children to see their
parents’ car.
We have begun working on Eucharist. There will be a
letter going home to explain what will be happening
next. There will be parent classes for you to attend
and special instructions as far as picture taking and
appropriate clothing choices. This will be done in
English and in Spanish. It is very important that I
receive Baptismal Certificates before First
Communion.
Communion If you are not sure if you have turned
in your child's Baptismal Certificate, please see Miss
Candy in the parish office.
As we are awarding prizes for memorizing prayers,
we have discovered that some children who have
been in the program for the last three years need
motivation to learn additional prayers and doctrine.
There will be different prizes for accomplishing this.
A note will be going home on Monday with
explanations.
RCIA:
Thank you to Deacon Jerry and Trese Graddon for
sharing their marriage story with us. We are very
lucky to have such a shining example of Christ's love
at work in this vocation. Next week we will be
discussing the Eucharist. Please come and join us. All
candidates and catechumens, please bring a copy of
your baptismal certificate or birth certificate.

On Friday, Jan. 30th, we presented our 2015
Distinguished Graduate Award. This year’s
recipient is Greg Carroll.
Greg Carroll attended and graduated from St.
Philomena School in 1992. He is a graduate of
Kennedy Catholic High School. Greg went to Western
Washington University where he earned a degree in
music and did his graduate work at the University of
WA. Greg pursued his dream and became a well
respected and renowned opera singer. Greg sang
opera at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San
Francisco Opera Center, the Los Angeles Opera, the
Spokane Opera, the Seattle Opera, the Opera of
Cleveland Ohio, with the Tacoma Symphony
Orchestra and various other places throughout the
United States. In addition, he has sung numerous
concerts in Italy, Norway, Spain, France, Portugal,
Germany, and Hungary and for such audiences as
John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican City.
Greg also had the immense pleasure of signing at the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City, a true highlight
for any opera singer. Sadly, Greg died on Tuesday,
July 2, 2013 in Seattle, WA. Greg will always be
remembered for his vibrant spirit and his beautiful
voice. The award was presented to Greg’s father,
Dean Carroll in Greg’s honor.
